2025 Draft Day 2 Recap: Rounds 11-20

Unlike past installments, the 2025 MLB First-Year Player Draft took place over two days instead of three. While Rounds 11-20 were typically reserved for that third and final day, they accompanied Rounds 4-10 on Monday. With that, here are brief summaries of who the Red Sox took with their 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th-round selections:

11. Barrett Morgan, RHP, Cowley College (KS)
Morgan (pictured) was taken out of Cowley College, a community college in Arkansas City, Kans., with the 328th overall pick. The 20-year-old righty from Stillwater, Okla., appeared in 16 games for the Tigers this past spring and posted a 0.42 ERA (0.75 WHIP) with 40 strikeouts to just four walks over 21 1/3 innings of relief en route to earning First Team All-KJCCC honors. Listed at 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, Morgan features a fastball that reaches 95 mph and a mid-70s curveball. He is currently committed to transfer to Texas A&M for what would be his junior season.

Welcome to the 2025 Draft Signing Period!

Now that the 2025 First-Year Player Draft is in the books, the signing period is upon us. With some limited exceptions, this year's signing deadline is 5:00 pm ET on July 28, 2025. As most of our readers know, each team's spending on draft pick bonuses is capped. The overall bonus cap is determined by the number and placement of each team's selections.

The bonus cap sets an aggregate limit for a team to spend on its selections in the first ten rounds and also limits teams from spending over $150,000 on players taken after the 10th round (the excess on any late-round bonuses will count against the bonus pool). Boston's cap is $12,409,300 this year. If the club exceeds its pool: (1) by 0-5%, it will be charged a 75% tax on the excess; (2) by 5-10%, it will pay the same tax and will also lose its first-round pick next season; (3) by 10-15%, it will be charged a 100% tax on the excess and lose its first- and second-round picks next season; and (4) by more than 15%, 100% tax on the excess and lose its next two first-round picks.

Red Sox select Mason White with fourth-round pick

With the 118th overall pick in the 2025 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Mason White, a shortstop from Arizona.

A local product out of Salpointe Catholic HS in Tucson, White had a big draft year, as he was given an All-American nod by Perfect Game (second team) and D1Baseball.com (third team). He was also the most valuable player of both the Big 12 Tournament and Eugene Regional with a .327/.412/.689 slash line, including 20 home runs.

However, some swing-and-miss comes with that raw power, as he struck out 65 times in 257 at-bats in 2025, though that's down significantly from 85 punchouts in 239 at-bats last season.

Red Sox select Marcus Phillips with 33rd overall pick

With the 33rd overall pick in the 2025 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Marcus Phillips, a right-handed pitcher out of the University of Tennessee. The pick, in Competitive Balance Round A, was acquired from Milwaukee along with Yophery Rodriguez and John Holobetz in exchange for Quinn Priester. Phillips is the 67th-ranked draft prospect by Baseball America and 61st by MLB Pipeline. Eric Longenhagen of Fangraphs had the highest ranking on Phillips, ranking him at 13.

The best pitch in his arsenal is a fastball that sits at 96-98 mph and touches 100. He struck out 98 in 83 innings this year for the Volunteers in his first year as a starter. He pitched out of the bullpen as a sophomore and struck out 22 over 20 innings with an ERA of 4.95. He attended Iowa Western Community College as a freshman, where he was a two-way player but pitched sparingly due to injuries and an inconsistent ability to throw strikes. Injuries were also an issue for him in his senior year of high school in South Dakota, which led him to the JuCo route.

2025 Red Sox Draft Preview

It’s that time of year again! The MLB Draft gets underway Sunday evening at 6:00 pm ET. Day One will include the first three rounds; Day Two will be Monday at 11:30 am, covering rounds 4 through 20. The Red Sox have four picks in the top 100 this year: #15 (first round), #33 (acquired in Quinn Priester trade), #75 (for losing Nick Pivetta in free agency) and #87 (third round pick). The club forfeited its second round pick (#54 overall) for signing Alex Bregman in free agency.

You can follow the Red Sox draft with us at SoxProspects.com as the picks come in, as we’ll have live coverage of Boston’s selections on SoxProspects News, the 2025 Draft page, and the @SoxProspects Twitter account. For now, here's a preview of some potential first round and local draft picks to whet your palette.

First Round (#15 overall)

Gavin Kilen, 2B, Tennessee – drafted by the Red Sox out of high school in 2022. Contact hitter, solid defensively at second base.

Brendan Summerhill, OF, Arizona – potential five-tool right fielder.

Ike Irish, OF/C, Auburn – high-end college bat spent most of 2025 in right field but has the tools to potentially develop into an average backstop.

Marek Houston, SS, Wake Forest – plus defender with an average to better bat and above-average speed.

Tyler Bremner, RHP, UC Santa Barbara – three potential plus pitches in his fastball, slider, and changeup. Slider needs work to get there. Solid control. Medium build.

Wehiwa Aloy, SS, Arkansas – middle infielder with a solid bat and impressive power. Needs to prove himself against breaking pitches. Not overly athletic.

Luke Stevenson, C, North Carolina – solid defender with a plus arm. Below-average hit tool but has some juice in his bat when he makes contact. Potential below slot option.

Gavin Fien, 3B, Great Oak (CA) – Toolsy prep player committed to Texas. Unclear what position he might play at the pro level.

Local Products
Some New England players who could get drafted this year include Northeastern OF Cam Maldonado, Salisbury (CT) C Thomas O’Connell, Avon Old Farms (CT) RHP Cole Raymond, Cheshire (CT) LHP Daniel Margolies, and Lawrence Academy (MA) RHP John Paone

Welcome to the 2024 Draft Signing Period!

Now that the 2024 First-Year Player Draft is in the books, the signing period is upon us. With some limited exceptions, this year's signing deadline is 5:00 pm ET on July 30, 2024.

Boston's cap is $10,521,600 this year.

2024 Draft Day 3 Recap: Rounds 11-15

After ending day two with a college pitcher, the Red Sox went back to the well to take college pitchers with each of their picks in rounds 11 through 15. Two of the picks recently underwent Tommy John surgery, while another was a top-rated prep pitcher who saw his season end early with a shoulder injury.

Here are brief recaps of selections 11 through 15:

11. Steven Brooks, RHP, Cal Poly (CA)
The trend of drafting tall pitchers continued on day three, with the Red Sox using their first pick of the day on the 6-foot-6 right-hander. Brooks was not ranked by any major publications, but Prospects Live noted that he has solid command of a five-pitch arsenal, with a fastball that tops out around 93. The 21-year-old started 15 games this year for the Mustangs, posting an ERA of 5.25 over 82 1/3 innings. He struck out 72 and walked 23.

12. Brady Tygart, RHP, Arkansas
Tygart (pictured) was one of the top college pitching prospects left on the board entering the draft's final day. Baseball America ranked him 175, and MLB Pipeline slotted him at 181. The 6-foot-2 right-hander likely fell in the draft due to a shoulder injury that ended his junior season early. The reports state that it will not require surgery, but not much additional information is available. Tygart flashes an above-average breaking ball with very high spin rates. He posted an ERA of 3.94 for the Razorbacks this season, striking out 69 over 59 1/3 innings. He also walked 36 and hit 15 batters, and control of his arsenal was noted as an area of opportunity in his scouting reports. He was ranked as the top prep pitching prospect in Mississippi in 2021 and named a Perfect Game First-Team Freshman All-American selection in 2022.

The left-handed hitting junior instead saw his draft stock fall after slashing .218/.409/.421 with 13 doubles, nine home runs, 24 RBIs, 49 runs scored, 12 stolen bases, 56 walks, and 47 strikeouts in 56 games (268 plate appearances) for the Jaguars in 2024.

Standing at 6-foot-4, Aita is a draft-eligible sophomore who turned 21 last month. The MLB.com broadcast noted that Aita is likely an analytics-driven pick, as he has high spin rates on his fastball and breaking ball. He was a starter for Kennesaw State this year, where he pitched to a 3.90 ERA with 84 strikeouts in 85 1/3 innings. He was an All-Atlantic Sun First Team selection. Cup of Coffee: Teel shines in FCL; Rafaela delivers again

8/6 Cup of Coffee:
There were several big performances Saturday down on the farm, but it was top draftee Kyle Teel who stole the show. In just the second game of his pro career, Teel homered as part of a three-hit day, powering the FCL Sox. Ceddanne Rafaela (pictured) went deep again with a game-tying homer in a contest that Worcester would go on to win in extra innings. Jedixson Paez was masterful for Salem, but the Sox needed extra-inning heroics to come away victorious after a ninth-inning collapse. Greenville couldn't capitalize on a big effort by Tyler Miller, while Portland continued to falter in Bowie. The DSL affiliates combined to go 3-0 on the day, with the Blue squad sweeping a de facto doubleheader.

-----

The WooSox faced off against old friend Denyi Reyes, who had the game well in control before giving way to the bullpen. Down 2-1 headed into the ninth, Ceddanne Rafaela cracked a game-tying solo home run, the fifth straight day he has gone deep. A two-run shot by David Hamilton in the 10th inning provided a pair of important insurance runs. Caleb Hamilton also went deep with a sixth-inning blast that was the only blemish on Reyes' line.

Tanner Houck returned to the mound for the first time since taking a line drive to the face in mid-June. Houck understandably showed some rust, allowing two runs on three hits in 1 2/3, striking out three and issuing three walks. Brandon Walter scattered two hits in 3 1/3 scoreless out of the Worcester bullpen. AJ Politi got credit for the win, firing a hitless ninth that included two walks and two strikeouts.

Minor Notes: Draft, transaction frenzies

In one of the busiest periods on the baseball calendar, the MLB Draft took place July 9-11 and the Red Sox made 22 selections over the three-day affair. The Futures Game also took place surrounding MLB All-Star festivities, while the full-season minor league affiliates are on an extended break. That hasn't prevented many different transactions from occurring, however.

MLB Draft

The MLB Draft wrapped up on Tuesday, as up to 22 new minor leaguers will join the Boston organization, should they sign contracts. It was Devin Pearson's first draft as amateur scouting director and he was able to secure a consensus top-10 prospect in Kyle Teel, a catcher from Virginia, with the No. 14 overall pick, along with Rhode Island native Zach Fogell out of UConn in the 18th round. Overall, the Red Sox selected just five high schoolers, along with a junior college player and 16 from four-year colleges. Overall, the Red Sox selected 12 pitchers and 10 position players.

The Red Sox have until 5 p.m. on July 25 to sign each of the 22 draftees and have a bonus pool of $10,295,100 with which to sign them but can go up to $10,809,855 without losing any draft selections. However, the organization will need to pay a 75 percent tax on the overages.

Check out the news page for our rapid reaction podcast on the first night of picks, a write-up on each of the selections in the first 10 rounds, and plenty of other content.

Draft Day 3 Recap: Rounds 11-20

The 2023 MLB draft has come to an end with the final 10 rounds. The Red Sox were able to sign eight of their final 10 selections of last year's draft.

Here are brief recaps of selections 11 through 20:

11. Nelly Taylor, OF, Polk State College (FL)
Taylor (pictured) is a left-hand hitting, left-hand throwing outfielder out of a junior college in Florida. He is listed at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds. This past season, he hit .353/.467/.620 with six home runs, six triples, and 19 doubles to go along with 31 stolen bases. He walked 36 times and struck out 42 times. According to our own Ian Cundall, he has plus-plus speed and is a good defender. Perfect Game has Taylor ranked #367, while he is not ranked by Baseball America. He becomes the second outfielder taken by Boston in this draft and he is committed to Florida State.

12. Max Carlson, RHP, North Carolina Carlson is a 6-foot-1 right-handed arm coming off his junior campaign at UNC. He tossed 76 innings this past season and posted a 5.45 ERA with 76 strikeouts and 32 walks. He started 14 games and appeared three other times in relief. He struck out 88 in 77 2/3 innings as a junior in 18 games, all starts. He is ranked #385 by Baseball America and according to them, he has strong pitchability. He was mainly a two-pitch pitcher with a fastball and a very good changeup. He mixed in a slider, but did not use the offering much. The fastball sits in the low-90s and his changeup is in the low-80s and generates a lot of swings and misses (40% miss rate). He was a big prospect in high school, as Perfect Game ranked him as the top player in the state of Minnesota, as well as the 12th best RHP in the country.

Red Sox select Ryan Ammons with 10th-round pick

With the 298th overall pick in the 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Ryan Ammons, a left-handed pitcher out of Clemson University.

Ammons opened the 2023 season as Clemson's Friday night starter and made two starts for the Tigers before missing nearly two months with a left forearm strain. Upon returning to action in late April, the 22-year-old southpaw was used strictly out of the bullpen, pitching to a 5.40 ERA with seven strikeouts to five walks across 10 innings of relief.

Red Sox select Blake Wehunt with ninth-round pick

With the 268th overall pick in the 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Blake Wehunt, a right-handed pitcher out of Kennesaw State (GA) University.

Wehunt is a sinkerball specialist who generates lots of ground-ball outs and features good control. As a Senior for Kennesaw State, he struck out 80 batters while walking only 23 in 76 1/3 innings, posting a 4.83 ERA on the year. He transferred from Southern Mississippi, where he allowed 19 runs in 11 innings in 14 appearances over three seasons.

Red Sox select Trennor O'Donnell with eighth-round pick

With the 238th overall pick in the 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft, Boston has selected Trennor O'Donnell, a right-handed pitcher from Ball State University. O'Donnell is a senior sign who was unranked in the draft by all major publications.

After a decent sophomore year where he pitched to a 3.74 ERA and struck out 34 in 33 2/3 innings, O'Donnell took a step back as a junior as his ERA ballooned to 5.48 over 65 2/3 innings. He did not let that rattle him, as his senior season was impressive and led to him seeing his name get called in the draft. His ERA went down to 2.93 over 92 innings while walking 32 and striking out 97. His last start came against a strong Kentucky team that advanced to the Super Regionals, and he held them to two runs over 7 1/3 innings.
