Red Sox select Jacob Mayers with ninth-round pick

With the 268th overall pick in the 2025 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Jacob Mayers, a right-handed pitcher out of Louisiana State University. Mayers is ranked #304 in Baseball America's Top 500 draft prospects.

Mayers transferred to LSU and converted to relief during the 2025 season after spending the previous two seasons in the rotation at Nicholls State University. Mayers had inconsistent results in his first season at LSU. He generated plenty of swings and misses and limited hard contact, striking out 26 batters and allowing only four hits in 15 innings pitched. However, he struggled mightily with his control as he walked more than a batter per inning and pitched to a 4.80 ERA overall.

The Red Sox will hope that they are able to iron out Mayers’ control issues in the development lab, as the right-hander brings a projectable 6-foot-5, 205-pound frame and an electric fastball. Mayers touches 100 mph regularly and has thrown his fastball as hard as 101.8 mph. He also throws a slider and splitter, both of which are a work in progress.

The Red Sox have had a type in the 2025 draft so far, as Mayers is the seventh SEC pitcher that the Red Sox have drafted through the first nine rounds, including his LSU teammate and third-round pick Anthony Eyanson. The full slot value for the 268th overall pick is $203,500.
