Red Sox select Anthony Eyanson with third-round pick
With the 87th overall pick in the 2025 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Anthony Eyanson, a right-handed pitcher out of Louisiana State University. He is ranked #32 in the Baseball America Top 500 and #40 in the MLB.com Top 250
Eyanson spent his first two seasons at the University of California - San Diego before transferring to LSU for his junior campaign. Slotting behind third-overall pick Kade Anderson in the Tigers rotation, Eyanson had an even 3.00 ERA in 108 innings across 20 appearances. He was third in the nation with 152 strikeouts on the year, and he walked 36.
At 6-foot-2, 208 pounds, Eyanson has a prototypical pitcher's build that should allow him to remain a starting pitcher. Still only 20 years old, he typically sits 92-94 with his fastball, touching 98 at times, and his slider—referred to by Baseball America as a gyro slider—grades as his best pitch. MLB.com placed a 65 grade on the slider for its ability to get "empty swings in and out of the strike zone thanks to its tremendous depth." His slower curveball also rates as a potentially above-average pitch, while he will show a changeup that is a work in progress.
Physically, Baseball America rated Eyanson as a powerful mover with "great strength in his lower half." He repeats his delivery well. coming from a high-three quarters slot. Along with his NCAA performance, Eyanson impressed as a member of the Team USA Collegiate National Team and with Cotuit in the Cape Cod League in 2024.
