Red Sox select Henry Godbout with second compensation round pick
With the 75th overall pick in the 2025 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Max Godbout, an infielder out of the University of Virginia. The full slot value for this selection is $1,093,800.
The 6-foot-2 right-handed hitter played mostly second base for the Cavaliers, although he was announced as a shortstop and Red Sox Director of Amateur Scouting said after the pick that he will be developed at both shortstop and second base. He is a contact-over-power hitter, joining the long line of solid hitters to come out of Charlottesville. MLB Pipeline is higher on the power tool, which will mostly come to the pull side, than Baseball America.
Keith Law is highest on Godbout, ranking him No. 57 overall, though he is a consensus top-100 player in the draft. Most rankings agree he has among the best contact tools in the class, while most of the disagreement comes on the defensive side of the ball. Law and Baseball America are of the opinion that the Brooklyn native will be fine at second base, while MLB Pipeline is unsure where he ends up defensively and FanGraphs has floated the possibility of work in the outfield to work on his defensive versatility.
In summation, his hit tool is the carrying tool, with truly elite bat-to-ball skills, striking out 70 times against 69 walks in his collegiate career. He has the arm for second base, but the question is whether he can stay there or whether he'll need to move to the outfield, where he is likely going to be a corner as a fringy runner.
