Red Sox select Dylan Brown with eighth-round pick
With the 238th overall pick in the 2025 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Dylan Brown, a left-handed pitcher out of Old Dominion University. He is ranked No. 226 in Baseball America's Top 500 and is not ranked within MLB.com's Top 250.
Brown, who just turned 21 last month, has been a three-year starter at Old Dominion. As a junior this past spring, the Lansdale, Pa. native posted a 4.06 ERA (1.24 WHIP) with a staff-leading 102 strikeouts to 26 walks over 15 starts (82 innings) for the Monarchs.
Listed at 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, Brown throws from a three-quarters arm slot and operates with a three-pitch mix that consists of a 90 mph fastball that tops out at 94 mph, an 82-85 mph slider with "above-average potential," and a low-80s changeup, per his Baseball America scouting report. Known for his strike-throwing abilities, the burly southpaw "relies more on feel for pitching than pure stuff," MLB.com notes.
Brown is the seventh pitcher to be drafted by the Red Sox thus far and the second straight lefty behind seventh-rounder Myles Patton (Texas A&M). The full slot value for the 238th overall pick in this year's draft is $229,000.
