2019 Donation Drive - We Need Your Help!

Dear readers,

We're asking for your help to raise $7,000 to keep SoxProspects.com up and running for another year. We have kept the site 100% free for over 15 years now, and we hope to do so for the foreseeable future. As we scout dozens of games first-hand each year, travel costs pile up. Our other costs to run the site often go up on an annual basis as well, and our ad revenue only covers a portion of those costs. So we're reaching out to the community for donations to help us keep the site going. Donations help cover site costs in two primary areas: (1) first-hand coverage travel costs for scouting and player columns; and (2) general IT costs (hardware, software, internet costs, hosting fees, etc.).

Your donations help us travel to Fort Myers in March to cover spring training and in the fall to cover the Instructional League each year, which are vital to get “one-stop shopping” for prospects across the system at levels we can’t see regularly. They also help cover the costs of travelling to affiliate games for regular first-hand coverage. We anticipate that our total costs will exceed $16,000 in 2019. While we may cover about half that from online advertising revenue, your donations help us ensure we can cover those costs in order to keep the site going.

Cup of Coffee: Mata, Dalbec, and Duran lead Portland

7/31 Cup of Coffee: A few of the system's top pitching prospects took the mound on Tuesday with mixed results. Bryan Mata and Thaddeus Ward each had good strikeout totals but gave up some hard contact, while Brian Johnson and Kyle Hart teamed up in Pawtucket's victory. Bobby Dalbec and Jarren Duran led Portland, and Marino Campana (pictured) did it all for Lowell.

-----

Pawtucket Red Sox 7, Lehigh Valley IronPigs (PHI) 3
A three-run home run from Rusney Castillo and a strong outing from Kyle Hart pushed the PawSox to victory. The home run was Castillo's 13th of the season as he has approaches his career-high of 15 hit in 2017. The PawSox also got home runs from Josh Ockimey, his 18th of the season, and Oscar Hernandez, his fourth of the season. The home run was Ockimey's first in 60 plate appearances as he has been mired in a long slump that he has shown signs of breaking out of recently. Marco Hernandez had two more hits as he continues to swing a hot bat.

Cup of Coffee: Cottam shines in Greenville, Rodriguez fans 12

7/30 Cup of Coffee: Despite four affiliates with off days, there was still plenty of action in the system. In Pawtucket, Gorkys Hernandez led an offensive barrage that saw the PawSox emerge victorious in a slugfest, while Greenville fell short despite an outstanding day at the plate from Kole Cottam (pictured). In the GCL, Jorge Rodriguez dazzled as he struck out 12 batters, and strong performances from Matthew Lugo and Daniel Bakst helped the Red Sox rout their opponents.

-----

Overcoming an early deficit, the PawSox offense exploded as they defeated the IronPigs. Gorkys Hernandez brought the power, launching his 16th home run of the season as he drove in four runs. Chad De La Guerra joined him in the home run column with his 11th long ball of the campaign. While they didn't go yard, Juan Centeno and Rusney Castillo each smacked a double as part of three-hit nights. Josh Ockimey had a productive night at the plate as he reached base four times via two singles and as many walks, while Cole Sturgeon also notched a pair of singles and drove in two runs.

Minor Notes: Trade talks heating up

Here are Monday's minor league notes:
  • We would like to thank all of our readers that contributed to this year's Donation Drive, as we have reached our goal. We will still be taking donations, but things are looking good now that we have raised over $7,000. It is greatly appreciated!
  • Trade talks are starting to ramp up, as the trade deadline is Wednesday at 4:00 pm. ESPN's Buster Olney is reporting that the Red Sox feel like they can make an impact move in the bullpen. Olney mentions Bobby Dalbec and Triston Casas as names to watch. Chris Hatfield and Ian Cundall offer their thoughts on Olney's report.
  • Dalbec has played first base in two of his last three games after not appearing at the position since June 2.

Cup of Coffee: Sturgeon, Brentz, and Hernandez homer for Pawtucket

7/29 Cup of Coffee: The affiliates went 0 for 5 on Sunday, with a few of the teams squandering late leads. Pawtucket scored 10 runs behind an offensive outburst from Cole Sturgeon (pictured, right) but they still came up short. It was a similar story in Portland, while Lowell wasted a strong pitching performance from Aldo Ramirez.

-----

The ball was flying out of BB&T Ballpark in Charlotte, with the two teams combining for nine home runs. Cole Sturgeon had one of his best games of the season, going 3 for 4 with a home run, double, and a stolen base. Gorkys Hernandez also had three hits and a home run, while Bryce Brentz went 2 for 4 with a double and a home run. The offense did not stop there, as Jantzen Witte was on base four times with three hits and a walk, and Chris Owings and Marco Hernandez each had two hits.

Cup of Coffee: Castellanos homers twice, Hernandez lifts Pawtucket

7/28 Cup of Coffee: It was an eventful night in the Red Sox system, as a number of games were decided in the final innings. Marco Hernandez (pictured) powered Pawtucket as they overcame Charlotte, while Pedro Castellanos's two home runs lifted Salem to victory. The GCL Red Sox fell to the Twins in extra innings, but the DSL Red Sox routed the Rays thanks to herculean efforts from Alixandri Alvarez and Nixson Munoz.

-----

A Cole Sturgeon single gave Pawtucket a lead they would not surrender, as the PawSox outlasted a Charlotte comeback. While Sturgeon delivered the winning blow, it was Marco Hernandez who led the PawSox offense with three hits and two runs scored. Batting behind him, Chris Owings drove in two with a pair of singles, while Tzu-Wei Lin laced a double as part of a two hit night. Erasmo Ramirez started the game for Pawtucket and went six innings, surrendering just two runs and striking out five. Relieving him was Ryan Brasier, who fired a perfect inning, while Trevor Kelley closed things out with a perfect ninth.

Cup of Coffee: Cannon belts first home run

7/27 Cup of Coffee: The system saw another doubleheader on Friday, this time for Lowell. In game two of the double dip, Cameron Cannon hit his first home run as a member of the Red Sox organization. Bobby Dalbec hit number 20 for Portland, while Chris Owings homered again for the PawSox. Pedro Castellanos also walked it off for Salem.

-----

Chris Owings homered yet again, as he has now gone yard in an incredible six consecutive games. He also added a double and drove in four runs. Marco Hernandez went 3 for 4 with a double, while Gorkys Hernandez picked up two hits as well. Ryan Weber walked five, but managed to keep the damage down, surrendering just one unearned run in four innings of work. Brian Johnson was awesome in three innings out of the bullpen, striking out six without allowing a run.

Cup of Coffee: Song debuts; McGrath scoreless streak continues

7/26 Cup of Coffee: The professional debut of Noah Song was the big story, but his fellow starters were not to be upstaged. All four full-season affiliates featured quality starts, highlighted by the continued dominance of Daniel McGrath (pictured). Despite extending his scoreless streak, McGrath's Sea Dogs fell in an extra-innings shutout. Pawtucket and Greenville both had all their scoring come on a home run to lead them in their respective pitchers' duels. Lowell also got some timely power to support Bryan Lucas in a piggyback role. The DSL teams split, with the Red Sox1 squad winning their ninth straight.

-----

It was a tall order for the PawSox with two-way phenom Brandon McKay on the mound for Durham. Kyle Hart went toe-to-toe with him, as they matched zeroes for four innings. The Rays finally reached Hart for a run in the sixth, but a Chris Owings three-run homer off the Bull 'pen proved decisive. The lefty gave up just two hits in six innings, walking three and striking out eight. Tanner Houck took the ball for the eighth inning and walked two of the five batters he faced and hit another. Trevor Kelley escaped the jam, preserving Houck's run of being unscored upon since his promotion.

Minor Notes: Song set to debut, McGrath extends scoreless streak

Here are Thursday's minor league notes:
  • Fourth-round pick Noah Song (pictured) is set to make his professional debut on Thursday as the Spinners take on Aberdeen. Song has not pitched in a game since May 17, so he likely will only throw one or two innings for the Spinners, but it will give fans a chance to see some results from one of the most interesting prospects in the system.
  • Considering how well he was playing it was a bit of a surprising move when the Red Sox sent Marco Hernandez down to Pawtucket as the countermove for activating Mitch Moreland. Hernandez was hitting .339/.359/.500 over 62 at-bats with Boston since coming back from a left shoulder injury that cost him the entire 2018 season.

Cup of Coffee: Duran goes 4 for 5; 6 strong innings for Mata

Cup of Coffee 7/25: Put simply, it was a tough Wednesday down on the farm. Portland notched 13 hits but could only score two runs, Salem blew a late lead and Greenville was shut out in each half of its doubleheader. However, there were bright individual performances, especially from the Sea Dogs. Jarren Duran (pictured) was 4 for 5, while Bryan Mata allowed just four hits in six innings. Thaddeus Ward also pitched well for Salem, giving up just one run on five hits in five frames. Tzu-Wei Lin had three hits, including a two-RBI double as well.

-----

Pawtucket Red Sox 5, Durham Bulls (TB) 4
Durham scored three runs in the first inning, but Pawtucket responded with a three-run frame of their own in the third and continued on for the win. Tzu-Wei Lin was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI, while Chris Owings and Rusney Castillo each hit home runs. Josh Smith allowed three runs on four hits in the first, but buckled down and allowed just two more base knocks across the final four innings of his outing. Ryan Brasier allowed the final Durham run in the sixth, while Hector Velazquez handed the seventh and eighth without a run and Travis Lakins earned the save.

Cup of Coffee: Hernandez and Castillo lead PawSox in blowout win

7/24 Cup of Coffee: The PawSox offense erupted for 21 hits behind the bats of Gorkys Hernandez (pictured) and Rusney Castillo, while Denyi Reyes and Jarren Duran helped Portland sweep a doubleheader. Gilberto Jimenez had three more hits for the Spinners, while Reidis Sena had a dominant performance in the DSL.

-----

It was a complete blowout in Durham, as the PawSox offense racked up 21 hits in one of their best performances of the season. Seven different players had multi-hit nights, with Gorkys Hernandez reaching base four times while hitting a home run and a double. Rusney Castillo had a five-hit night and scored three runs, and Chris Owings and Juan Centeno each added home runs. The only player who had an off night was Josh Ockimey as he went 0 for 6 with four strikeouts as his average dropped to .191.

Cup of Coffee: Diaz sharp, Draftees power GCL Sox

7/22 Cup of Coffee: It was a relatively quiet night on the farm as both Pawtucket and Greenville had the night off, while Portland and Lowell were both rained out. Salem fell in the completion of a suspended game, a strong outing from Jhonathan Diaz (pictured) helped right the ship as Salem eased to victory in game two. In the GCL, Jorge Rodriguez's strong start was backed by strong performances from 2019 draftees Dominic D'Alessandro, Daniel Bakst, and Matthew Lugo

-----

Portland Sea Dogs vs. Hartford Yard Goats (COL) PPD (inclement weather)
Monday night's contest between the Sea Dogs and Yard Goats was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up on Tuesday, July 23rd as part of a doubleheader.

-----

Salem continued it's suspended game from Sunday night, but was unable to make a difference in the final score. The Red Sox were trailing the Pelicans 6-1 following the suspension of Sunday night's game due to lightning and were shutout across the final two frames of the game. Algenis Martinez was the lone pitcher to appear for Salem and fired a scoreless inning, striking out one.

Cup of Coffee: Lozada, Casas power Drive offense

7/22 Cup of Coffee: It was a split decision on Sunday on the farm, with two wins, two losses, and a suspended contest. While the Salem game was called due to a literal power outage, the term "power outage" could not be applied to Greenville's 22-hit, 16-run onslaught. Everlouis Lozada (pictured) and Triston Casas led a Greenville lineup in which everyone had at least one hit. Erasmo Ramirez and Brian Johnson combined to take a no-hitter into the seventh inning, with the PawSox settling for a victory in both the game and series. Portland staged several rallies but could not dig itself out of an early deficit, while Lowell was handed a rare come-from-behind loss.

-----

A dominant effort by Erasmo Ramirez helped the PawSox to their first series win of July. Ramirez fired five no-hit innings, striking out six and allowing just one baserunner on a third-inning walk. Brian Johnson followed, continuing the no-hit bid through the sixth before surrendering a double to lead off the seventh inning. The Knights touched Johnson for their only run of the day but the rehabbing lefty struck out four without issuing a walk in his two innings of work. Tanner Houck and Travis Lakins closed things out with a hitless inning apiece. Both hurlers struck out a batter, while Houck issued one walk.

Cup of Coffee: six scoreless for McGrath; Fitzgerald with clutch RBI

7/20 Cup of Coffee: In what is becoming a common occurrence, Daniel McGrath (pictured) was brilliant for Portland as they downed the Senators. In Salem, a strong outing from Enmanuel De Jesus was rewarded with a late comeback, while in the GCL Brock Bell fired a scoreless inning for the second straight time. Both DSL squads won their competitions today thanks in part to a herculean effort from Bryan Gonzalez and a strong showing from the DSL Red Sox1 pitching staff.

-----

A late-inning comeback fell just short as the PawSox fell to the Knights. Chris Owings continued to swing a hot bat for Pawtucket as he singled and launched his fourth home run of the season. Joining Owings in the home run column was Gorkys Hernandez, who launched his 13th long ball of the season. Juan Centeno doubled and walked as he drove in two. Kyle Hart got the start and was roughed up to the tune of six earned runs in five innings. Hector Velasquez came on in relief and allowed a run in two frames, while Ryan Brasier and Domingo Tapia combined to toss two scoreless innings.

Cup of Coffee: Wilson homers twice, Scherff gets back on track

7/20 Cup of Coffee: A two-home run game from Marcus Wilson was not enough for the Sea Dogs, while Tyler Dearden hit a grand slam in support of Alex Scherff (pictured, right) in Greenville. Brandon Howlett and Nick Decker each had strong nights, while Bryan Mata had an up-and-down performance for Portland.

-----

Josh A. Smith started for the PawSox, and he improved to 4-2 with six scoreless innings, striking out six without issuing a walk. When he left the game the Knights woke up, as Mike Shawaryn absorbed most of the damage. He recorded only one out and gave up three runs as his ERA jumped to 9.18 over his last 16 1/3 innings. The bullpen was solid after that, with Bobby Poyner striking out four in 1 2/3 innings and Trevor Kelley picking up his sixth save with a scoreless ninth.

Cup of Coffee: Cannon breaks out; Howlett rips three doubles

7/19 Cup of Coffee: Boston's top pick in each of the last three drafts played prominent roles on Thursday, supplemented by several other top-20 prospects. Cameron Cannon (pictured, right) and Gilberto Jimenez had monster games in the first game of a doubleheader that Lowell would go on to sweep. Triston Casas blasted his 17th homer of the year but was almost a footnote behind the efforts of Brandon Howlett and Brayan Bello. Denyi Reyes has righted the ship for Portland, helping lead a Sea Dogs shutout. Pawtuket dropped its contest despite strong efforts out of the bullpen by 2017 first-rounder Tanner Houck and rehabbing 2018 hero Nathan Eovaldi. The DSL squads swept their contests, led by Bryan Gonzalez and Daniel Belen.

-----

The PawSox offense generated only three hits as they were unable to take advantage of some solid pitching performances. Travis Lakins returned to the PawSox and got the opener assignment, striking out a pair and giving up one hit in a scoreless first inning. Nathan Eovaldi followed, striking out the side sandwiched around a walk in his lone inning of work. Teddy Stankiewicz gave up just three hits in five innings but was snakebitten by the long ball, surrendering four runs on three round trippers. Tanner Houck fired two scoreless innings that featured one strikeout and one particularly nasty slider

Cup of Coffee: 2 hits for Lugo; Tendler launches 10th home run

Cup of Coffee 7/18: The Red Sox system was successful on the evening, with a 4-3 record. Portland scored five runs in a runaway victory against New Hampshire, while Salem fought back late against the Wood Ducks to earn the win. Despite a quality start from Kevin Biondic, the Greenville bats couldn't get going and were shutout. Matthew Lugo continued to heat up in the GCL, as he notched two singles and an RBI to raise his batting average to .265 through 13 professional contests, including five base knocks in his last three games. A trio of Portland hitters grabbed two RBI in Jarren Duran, Jeremy Rivera and Luke Tendler (pictured).

-----

Louisville Bats (CIN) 8, Pawtucket Red Sox 1
The Red Sox and the Bats were deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the seventh inning, but Domingo Tapia struggled mightily, allowing five runs (four earned) during the fateful top half of the frame after getting through the sixth unscathed. Erasmo Ramirez delivered 2 1/3 scoreless frames to begin the contest, while Jordan Weems allowed just one run during his 2 2/3-inning outing to follow him up. The deficit was large enough where outfielder Cole Sturgeon was called upon to pitch the ninth. Rusney Castillo was the lone bright spot offensively, as he was 2 for 3 with a steal and a double.

Cup of Coffee: Wade throws seven scoreless innings, Casas hits 16th home run

7/17 Cup of Coffee: Konner Wade (pictured) and Eduard Bazardo combined to throw a four-hit shutout for the Sea Dogs, Triston Casas hit his 16th home run of the year, and Logan Browning continued a dominant stretch for the Drive.

-----

Home runs from Chad De La Guerra and Rusney Castillo provided more than enough support for Matthew Kent. De La Guerra launched a three-run shot in the seventh, and Castillo had a solo home run in the fourth. Castillo's home run was his 10th of the year as he has already doubled last year's total. Chris Owings went 2 for 4 with a stolen base to round out the offense.

Kent picked up his first win with the PawSox as he allowed one run over six innings, allowing only three hits. Mike Shawaryn and Travis Lakins combined to toss three scoreless innings, with Shawaryn notching two strikeouts.

Cup of Coffee: Corcino powers Salem; Lugo breaks out

7/16 Cup of Coffee: It was an eventful night in the Red Sox system as several players put together strong performances. Edgar Corcino brought the thunder for Salem as he drove in six, thanks to a pair of long balls. In Greenville, Chase Shugart and Devlin Granberg (pictured) continued to be catalysts for the Drive, while Matthew Lugo broke out in the GCL.

-----

The PawSox walked the tight rope as they overcame Louisville. Kyle Hart was on the hill for Pawtucket and tossed six scoreless innings, striking out four. Making his Triple-A debut, Tanner Houck relieved him and pitched a scoreless inning despite walking two. Bobby Poyner earned his fourth save of the season by striking out two in a shut out ninth. Josh Ockimey was the lone Pawtucket batter to collect multiple hits as his RBI double gave the PawSox a lead they would not relinquish.

Cup of Coffee: Mata rolls again; Ward exits early

7/15 Cup of Coffee: Offense was hard to come by on Sunday. Two affiliates accumulated just three hits apiece, including Lowell, who was the only affiliate to come away with the win on the day. Bryan Mata (pictured, left) was solid in his third Double-A outing despite getting no offensive support. Thaddeus Ward came out strong but departed in the third inning several pitches after taking a comebacker off of the hand. With the major league squad playing on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball, Pawtucket got the NESN treatment, with fans treated to a back-and-forth contest and a look at Darwinzon Hernandez. Greenville fell despite the efforts of Tyler Esplin and Grant Williams, while Salem was efficiently shut out.

-----

The PawSox dropped the rubber game of their five-game set as Darwinzon Hernandez surrendered his first run since moving to the bullpen at the beginning of the month. Unscored upon in his four previous outings, Hernandez entered with the score knotted at three in the eighth inning. The 22-year-old lefty issued a walk and hit a batter while inducing a couple of fly outs, but then gave up an RBI single that gave the Bisons a one-run lead. Hernandez struck out the next batter to limit the damage, but the PawSox offense failed to rally. Josh Smith got the start for Pawtucket, giving up three runs on seven hits in six innings. Jordan Weems and Trevor Kelley tossed a scoreless inning apiece.

Cup of Coffee: Bello strikes out 13 over six innings

7/14 Cup of Coffee: A 13-strikeout performance from Brayan Bello was the highlight of the night as the Red Sox affiliates combined to go 6-0 on the day. Three of the games were won in extra innings, with Oscar Hernandez's walk-off home run lifting Pawtucket. C.J. Chatham had another good game for the Sea Dogs, while Garrett Benge helped Salem mount an impressive comeback.

-----

Pawtucket Red Sox 7, Buffalo Bisons (TOR) 5 (10 innings)
Oscar Hernandez launched a walk-off two-run home run with two outs in the 10th inning to win it for the PawSox. Pawtucket was down by two entering the ninth, and they ultimately tied the game with two outs when Tzu-Wei Lin scored on a wild pitch. Hernandez provided the fireworks in the 10th, and Sam Travis hit a two-run home run earlier in the night. Travis has been hot to start July, with his current line sitting at .342/.400/.553.

Cup of Coffee: Diaz continues hot streak for Salem

7/13 Cup of Coffee: A whopping 11 games were played throughout the system last night, as Pawtucket and Salem played doubleheaders while Portland completed a suspended game along with a regularly scheduled game. Jhonathan Diaz (pictured) continued his recent dominance for Salem, while Tanner Houck and Darwinzon Hernandez made some noise as relievers. Youngsters including recent draft pick Jaxx Groshans showed off offensively for Lowell.

-----

The PawSox fought back after being down 4-0, but it wasn't enough in game one. Janzten Witte and Chris Owings led the way offensively, as Witte went 2 for 2 with a double and Owings belted his third long ball of the year. Erasmo Ramirez took the loss but went the distance, surrendering four earned runs with four strikeouts and just one walk.

Cup of Coffee: Weber, Bastardo shine in no-hit bids

7/12 Cup of Coffee: It was a day of impressive pitching performances, even in games where the affiliates did not prevail. Ryan Weber (pictured) carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning for the PawSox, as did the DSL Red Sox1 team highlighted by Angel Bastardo. Matt Kent matched up evenly with a first-round pick, while Chris Machamer and Hunter Haworth teamed up for an impressive outing for the Drive. Rain affected affiliates from Binghamton to Buena Vista. The second game of Portland's doubleheader was suspended, while Salem's doubleheader and the GCL Sox' contest were postponed.

-----

The PawSox opened their second half schedule with a brutal come-from-behind loss after a masterful effort by Ryan Weber. The right-hander fired 6 1/3 no-hit innings before giving up a single in the seventh, followed by a sacrifice fly to end the shutout. Through his first six frames he faced the minimum 18 batters, with both walks allowed ultimately erased on double plays. Weber departed after those seven frames with a 4-1 lead, the Bisons showed their immediate relief. Travis Lakins came on and surrendered a single and pair of walks without retiring a batter. Trevor Kelley followed, getting the shallow fly ball out that he needed, followed by a sacrifice fly that cut the lead to two, but the lead was then erased with a two-out three-run homer.

Cup of Coffee: strong start for Gonzalez; Wilson hits clutch homer

Cup of Coffee 7/11: The bats scuffled in the Eastern League All-Star Game, but Tanner Houck was a bright spot, striking out two hitters in his inning of work. That was one of several strong pitching performances, as Daniel Gonzalez (pictured) gave Salem 6 1/3 one-run innings, while Chase Shugart took a tough loss as he also allowed only a single runner to cross the plate. Nixson Munoz threw six shutout innings in the DSL, as well. Salem took home a victory in no small part because of Marcus Wilson's two-run home run in the seventh and Alex Erro and Stephen Scott each recorded three hits for Lowell.

-----

Dan Runzler faced three batters in the second inning, allowing two hits and a run to score before forcing a ground out to end the frame. Trevor Kelley was named to the roster, but did not appear.
-----

All four Sea Dogs selected appeared for the East Division, but the squad was two-hit in a shutout loss. Jhon Nunez served as the leadoff hitter, but was 0 for 2. Bobby Dalbec hit 0 for 1, adding a walk. On the mound, Tanner Houck allowed one hit but struck out two in the third inning, while Dedgar Jimenez allowed a run on two hits in his frame, including a home run.

Cup of Coffee: Sixth-rounder Murphy debuts, Scherff struggles

7/10 Cup of Coffee: With Pawtucket and Portland in the All-Star Break and Salem having the day off it was a quieter night on the farm. Bobby Dalbec and Jhon Nunez did participate in the Eastern League Home Run Derby though they did not win.

-----

Asheville Tourists (COL) 9, Greenville Drive 4
Another rough start from Alex Scherff doomed the Drive. Scherff was tagged for six runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings, walking three and striking out one. Scherff pitched to a 6.33 ERA in May and struggled to start June, but he actually found a good groove over his last four starts, allowing five runs over 20 2/3 innings. This start was a step back, and his ERA now sits at 5.38 on the season. Angel Padron did not fare much better as he gave up two runs over 1 1/3 innings.

The heart of the order usually does all the damage for Greenville, but Triston Casas and Devlin Granberg combined to go 0 for 9 with five strikeouts. Kole Cottam went 2 for 5 with a double, Tyler Dearden went 2 for 4, and Grant Williams (pictured, above) went 2 for 3 with a double and a walk.

Cup of Coffee: 5 shutout frames for Ward; Lugo hits first professional homer

Cup of Coffee 7/9: Each of the stateside teams emerged victorious on Monday night, as the All-Star breaks for Portland and Pawtucket commenced. Salem completed the comeback in a suspended game from Sunday, and then Thaddeus Ward (pictured), Andrew Politi, and Rio Gomez combined to shut out Wilmington in the next game. Ward struck out six batters in five innings of work. The ball flew all over the yard for the affiliates in action. Edgar Corcino hit a home run as part of the win. Nick Decker added a big fly, as did Nicholas Northcut. Second-round pick Matthew Lugo also drilled his first career home run, as did Bramdon Perez.

Salem Red Sox 9, Wilmington Blue Rocks (KC) 7 (Completion of Suspended Game)
The Red Sox scored seven runs over the final three innings to overcome a 5-2 deficit headed into the bottom of the sixth. Jake Thompson allowed five runs across five innings in the start, all of which came in the first inning. Four of the seven hits on Thompson's tab came in the first inning as well. Andrew Schwaab earned the win with 1 2/3 innings of shutout ball. Keith Curcio, Pedro Castellanos and Marcus Wilson each had two hits, while No. 8 and 9 hitters Nick Sciortino and Tanner Nishioka each delivered a two-run home run as part of the comeback bid. The game was resumed from Sunday, which was halted because of rain with one out in the top of the eighth inning.

Salem swept the unorthodox doubleheader on the back of a combined shutout from Thaddeus Ward, Andrew Politi, and Rio Gomez. Ward handled the first five innings, allowing four hits against six strikeouts. Politi recorded three quick flyouts in the sixth and Gomez earned the save despite surrendering a single and a walk. Edgar Corcino had two hits, both of which drove in runs. He delivered a solo home run in the sixth while adding an RBI double in the second. Keith Curcio also had a pair of base knocks.

Wilmington Blue Rocks (KC) at Salem Red Sox, PPD
The contest, which was pushed back because of the suspended game on Sunday, will be made up July 11 in Wilmington.

Cup of Coffee: Duran impresses with single, steal in Futures Game

7/8 Cup of Coffee: All-Star festivities got started on Sunday, with Jarren Duran (pictured) joining the contingent in Cleveland as a member of the American League futures game squad. Duran's Portland mates stammered into their All-Star break with a tough loss, while their counterparts in Pawtucket cruised into midseason with the sweep of a de facto doubleheader. Elsewhere, Tyler Esplin keyed a Greenville win on a day hits were hard to come by, while Lowell suffered a rare defeat. Salem was involved in a slugfest when the rains hit in the eighth.

-----

The Futures Game ended in a tie, and the Red Sox lone representative nearly was the hero. Tied 2-2 and with Isaac Paredes (DET) on second base and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Jarren Duran came up against Rockies lefty and Lynn English product Ben Bowden. Duran sliced one of his trademark opposite field singles to left, but with less than two outs, Paredes wisely held at second base. The National League brought on Luis Patino (SD) to relieve Bowden, and after Duran swiped second, Patino retired the next two batters to send the game to extra innings.

Cup of Coffee: Houck, Martinez struggle in relief on down night

7/7 Cup of Coffee: Rain and losses marred by big innings against prospects pitching in relief marked the system's action on Saturday. The system's lone wins came out of the Rookie-ball levels, with the GCL Sox rallying after dropping the conclusion of yesterday's suspended game and the second DSL entry putting up 12 runs thanks to a sloppy effort from their opponents and a 5-hit effort from backup catcher Jose Navas. The biggest news may have come in the Portland loss, as right-hander Tanner Houck made his first appearance in relief, but then recorded just one out while giving up six runs. It is not entirely clear whether Houck is officially moving to the bullpen with an eye on helping the Major League club this year, or if this was just to get him work before the All-Star Break, but the situation bears watching.

-----

The PawSox led after two innings before rain halted play in Allentown after one batter in the third. The clubs will resume play at 11:05 Sunday morning as part of a doubleheader before heading into the All-Star Break. The visitors took the lead in the first thanks to consecutive two-out doubles by Chris Owings and Bryce Brentz, then picked up a couple more, again with two outs when Cole Sturgeon homered to bring in Josh Ockimey, who had also doubled.

On the mound, Tyler Thornburg started and allowed two baserunners before settling down and retiring three straight. The outing was the last of his 30-day rehab assignment, which ends on Tuesday, meaning the Red Sox front office will need to make a decision on his future soon. Erasmo Ramirez pitched a scoreless second before the skies opened up.

Cup of Coffee: Shugart leads Drive, Casas homers

7/6 Cup of Coffee: Chase Shugart (pictured) continued his strong campaign for Greenville with a scoreless outing. Daniel Gonzalez pitched well for Salem and Darwinzon Hernandez threw his first inning of relief for Pawtucket. Jarren Duran had four hits for the Sea Dogs and Triston Casas hit his 15th home run of the season.

-----

After taking the lead in the 11th, Bobby Poyner let it slip away by allowing two runs in the bottom half of the frame. Darwinzon Hernandez made his first Triple-A relief appearance, tossing a perfect inning with one strikeout. Konner Wade started and was solid, allowing just a run in five innings. Trevor Kelley and Travis Lakins added scoreless innings. The PawSox had just four hits, but Gorkys Hernandez reached three times with a double, two walks, and two runs.

Cup of Coffee: Dalbec provides July 4 fireworks

7/5 Cup of Coffee: Really, there's no need to wait for the 4th of July for a fireworks show when Bobby Dalbec (pictured) is near. We've reached the point in the year known for hot weather, cookouts, and Dalbec hitting a home run every day, as the third baseman helped power Portland past Manchester. Lowell got in on the fun when they walked off for the second consecutive night, this time on a Marino Campana home run. Greenville and Pawtucket provided plenty of offense, with monster games by Everlouis Lozada and Oscar Hernandez, but both squads saw their bullpen falter late.

-----

The pyrotechnics in Allentown did not wait until the game was over. The PawSox stormed off to a 10-2 lead, with big innings in the second and the fifth backing a solid start by Ryan Weber. Weber went five innings, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out five. Oscar Hernandez led the offensive attack in his first game back after a whirlwind week. A week ago, Hernandez left for London as the major league team's emergency catcher and then Tuesday was designated for assignment when a 40-man roster spot was needed. The veteran backstop was 4 for 5 with a three-run second-inning homer. Jantzen Witte also went deep as part of his two-hit evening. The game turned nightmarish after Weber exited, with the IronPigs scoring 10 runs in three-plus innings, including six in the bottom of the ninth before an out was recorded.

  • Our director of scouting Ian Cundall (@IanCundall on twitter) has been hard at work this summer putting together updated scouting reports for many of the lower-level Red Sox prospects. The scouting reports updated include the GCL's Aaron Perry and the red-hot Yusniel Padron-Artiles of Lowell. You can find these scouting reports on the player pages on the website.
  • The unranked Trevor Kelley was called up by the Red Sox this week following a superb 2019 campaign with the PawSox. In his time in Triple-A Kelley has a 0.96 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings pitched.
  • Bryan Mata (pictured right) was excellent in his long-awaited Double-A debut as he shut down the Trenton Thunder. Mata didn't miss a beat as he hurled six innings of one-run ball and struck out five.

Cup of Coffe: Dalbec goes yard again, Ward shines

7/4 Cup of Coffee: Bobby Dalbec and the Portland Sea Dogs brought some early fireworks as Portland overcame the Thunder. Elsewhere in the Sox system runs were hard to come by, but the pitching came through as four affiliates were involved in pitcher's duels with varying results. Thaddeus Ward (pictured) dominated for Salem, and Yasel Santana was excellent as Lowell walked off the Lake Monsters.

-----

A late inning rally came up short as the PawSox fell to their Yankee rivals. Teddy Stankiewicz was solid on the mound, allowing four earned runs in seven innings and only walking one. Returning to the PawSox Mike Shawaryn came on in relief and surrendered an earned run in two innings out of the pen. At the plate Chris Owings, Gorkys Hernandez, and Cole Sturgeon each singled and smacked solo home runs as the only offense the PawSox could muster.

Cup of Coffee: Padron-Artiles and Mata continue to roll

7/3 Cup of Coffee: Bryan Mata edged out Yusniel Padron-Artiles for the June Pitcher of the Month award, but Padron-Artiles got off to a faster start in July as he struck out 10 batters for Lowell. Mata was still great in his Double-A debut, and his electric fastball is already turning heads in the Eastern League. Elsewhere on the farm both the Salem and Greenville offenses put up double-digit runs, Heath Hembree began his trip back to the Boston bullpen, and Aaron Perry looked good again after missing all of 2018.

-----

The Pawtucket bats went quiet as they were shutout by the RailRiders. Pawtucket managed only five hits, with Chris Owings going 2 for 4, while Sam Travis went 1 for 3 with a walk. Josh Ockimey struck out in all three of his plate appearances, and he is now 3 for his last 28 with 14 strikeouts.

June Players of the Month: Chad De La Guerra and Bryan Mata

Two players from different ends of the prospect spectrum are taking home SoxProspects.com Player of the Month honors for June: infielder Chad De La Guerra (pictured right) and right-handed pitcher Bryan Mata (pictured below). The unranked De La Guerra has been a steady riser in the Red Sox system since being drafted in 2015, but has finally broken out this season despite battling injuries. Mata, on the other hand, has been among the top ten prospects in the system (as ranked by SoxProspects.com) since bursting on the scene in 2017.

Cup of Coffee: Dalbec homers twice as Houck dazzles

7/2 Cup of Coffee: It was an eventful night in the Red Sox system as multiple players put together shining performances. Bobby Dalbec (pictured) and Tanner Houck teamed up to down the Thunder, while Salem found some power from three unlikely sources in support of an excellent outing from Jhonathan Diaz. In Lowell, Joe Davis launched the first home run of his pro career as Lowell sailed past the Lake Monsters.

-----

It was a day to forget for the PawSox as they fell behind early and never came close to getting back into the game. Erasmo Ramirez got the start for Pawtucket and was solid, allowing four runs in six innings pitched. Dan Runzler allowed an additional run in his two innings out of the bullpen, and Travis Lakins contributed with a scoreless ninth. The only extra-base hit came off the bat of Rusney Castillo, one of only four hits the PawSox would muster in the contest.

Cup of Coffee: Zeferjahn debuts; De La Guerra keeps rolling

7/1 Cup of Coffee: The 2019 draftees are off to an early start with their contributions, as starter Ryan Zeferjahn dominated in his debut and Jaxx Groshans supported him with his first professional homer. Portland and Salem suffered tough losses despite strong starts from veterans Matt Kent and Daniel Gonzalez. Elsewhere, Chase Shugart in Greenville and Darwinzon Hernandez for Pawtucket both had overall solid outings marred by control troubles and inefficiency. Hernandez's squad came away victorious, however. Chad De La Guerra (pictured, left) again led Pawtucket, as the infielder has quickly become a dangerous force in the International League

------

The Chad De La Guerra barrage continued Sunday with another multi-hit effort. Getting the start at third base, he was 4 for 5 with two more doubles, giving him 11 for the month to go along with eight June round trippers. Josh Ockimey blasted his 16th homer of the year, while Cole Sturgeon tripled as part of a 3-for-4 afternoon.
