Cup of Coffee: Hernandez and Castillo lead PawSox in blowout win

It was a complete blowout in Durham, as the PawSox offense racked up 21 hits in one of their best performances of the season. Seven different players had multi-hit nights, with Gorkys Hernandez reaching base four times while hitting a home run and a double. Rusney Castillo had a five-hit night and scored three runs, and Chris Owings and Juan Centeno each added home runs. The only player who had an off night was Josh Ockimey as he went 0 for 6 with four strikeouts as his average dropped to .191.
Teddy Stankiewicz was able to pitch comfortably with the lead, striking out seven while walking only one over six innings. He allowed one run as his ERA dropped to 4.11. Mike Shawaryn struck out two and Trevor Kelley struck out three as they each threw scoreless innings.

A three-run home run from Tate Matheny and two doubles from Bobby Dalbec paced the offense in the first game of a doubleheader. Matheny's home run, his eighth of the year, broke the game open, and Dalbec's two doubles snapped him out of a recent power slump that has seen him post only four extra-base hits over his last 19 games. Jarren Duran went 2 for 4 with a run scored, and Marcus Wilson went 1 for 3 with a double.
Starter Konner Wade lasted only 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. Eduard Bazardo came on in the fifth and got out of a jam, and then tossed a scoreless sixth inning as he bounced back from a rough appearance on Friday. Robinson Leyer struck out three in the seventh to close the game out.

Denyi Reyes pitched into the seventh inning and Kevin Lenik got his first save in the Red Sox system as Portland picked up a sweep on the night. Reyes ended the night with six scoreless innings, striking out four as he won his fourth game in a row. Lenik inherited a baserunner from Reyes in the final inning, but he made quick work of Hartford once he came in. Duran had two more hits and Matheny added a double, and the only run of the game scored when Matheny grounded into a double play.

Edgar Corcino went 2 for 4 with a double, home run, and three RBI, and that was more than enough for the pitching staff. Dylan Thompson got the start and turned in one of his best starts of the year as he did not allow a run over six innings. Dominic LoBrutto followed with two innings while striking out three, and Zach Schellenger struck out two in a scoreless ninth.
Along with Corcino the bottom of the order did a lot of damage, with Michael Osinski going 2 for 3 with a walk, double, and two runs scored, and Nick Lovullo going 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Aside from Gilberto Jimenez (pictured) going 3 for 4, there was not much to see from the Lowell offense on Tuesday. The 19-year-old is now batting .367 on the season. Aldo Ramirez struck out six over four innings though he also allowed three runs on five hits and a walk. Jenrry Mejia appeared in his first game since June 30 as he worked a scoreless inning in his rehab assignment. Cody Scroggins tossed two shutout innings, but Jose Larez and Robbie Baker were both hit hard at the end of the game.

It was a rare game that got suspended in extra innings, with both teams scoring once in the 10th inning before the game was called for the day. The Rays still had a runner on first with two outs, so the game will resume with the winning run on base. Gregorio Reyes fired five innings of two-run ball to start, and Reed Harrington followed with a scoreless inning in his first appearance in three weeks. Casey Sutherland kept his ERA at 0.00 with three shutout innings, and the undrafted free agent has now thrown 11 1/3 shutout innings to start his career. Nilo Rijo put the Red Sox ahead with an RBI single in the 10th.

Despite issuing nine walks the Red Sox pitching was able to limit the Marlins to two runs in their seventh straight win. Claudio Ochoa gave up only an unearned run in his three innings, and Beiker Pineda earned the victory after striking out five in his three shutout innings. While every other pitcher walked three batters, Isaac Pinales came on in the ninth and allowed just one hit as he picked up the save.
Leadoff hitter Brainer Bonaci went 2 for 5 but was also caught stealing for the seventh time. Eduardo Lopez went 1 for 4 and converted his 11th steal in 12 chances while also recording an outfield assist, and Albert Feliz went 2 for 4 with a double.

Entering the game with an 0-6 record, Reidis Sena was unhittable to get in the win column for the first time. Sena allowed only one hit and struck out eight without walking a batter over five innings. The offense was led by Bryan Gonzalez, who hit an RBI double, his 16th extra-base hit of the season. Giancarlos Santana also added a double while also stealing a base, and Naysbel Marcano went 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Player of the Night: Gorkys Hernandez led a balanced Pawtucket attack, going 3 for 5 with a double, home run, walk, and a stolen base. The 31-year-old has spent parts of the last four seasons in the majors with Pittsburgh and San Francisco, but his numbers have taken a step back this season. Hernandez had really been struggling lately, entering the game in a 5-for-48 slump. His .133 batting average on balls in play during that time shows that he is due for a turnaround, and Tuesday's game may have been the first sign of that.
