Scouting Scratch: The changes that have unlocked Luis Perales' potential

A lot has been made of the impact the new Red Sox pitching infrastructure instituted by Craig Breslow, Andrew Bailey, Justin Willard and co has had at the major league level, with the club boasting one of the top pitching staffs in Major League Baseball two months into the season, and that despite several key arms spending time on the injured list. Less discussed, but no less important, are the substantial changes the organization has made at the minor league level as well, a process started even before the hiring of Breslow, Bailey, and Willard. The effects of these changes are probably most evident in the young arm who has made the biggest jump among the system’s arms this year and will return to his spot as the top-ranked pitcher in the system next week, 21-year-old right-hander Luis Perales

Coming into the year, Perales was seen as a volatile arm with impressive stuff, but held back by inconsistent command and performance. This year, Perales has been a different pitcher, showing improved command and consistency and dominating the South Atlantic League with 46 strikeouts to only 10 walks in 26.1 innings. His 3.42 ERA and 1.44 WHIP do not jump off the page, but those numbers are deceiving, illustrated by his 1.91 FIP and astronomically high .474 BABIP, that is largely due to a subpar Greenville defense. (A hiccup in his first start, in which he gave up three runs on three hits and two walks in one inning—but still struck out three—also accounts for nearly a full run of his ERA.) His strikeout rate has increased dramatically and his walk rate has dropped. He is generating much more contact on the ground and is giving up far fewer fly balls and home runs. Everything is trending in the right direction, and looking under the surface, several tangible changes that have allowed him to unlock this performance.

Cup of Coffee: Campbell reaches five times in Greenville loss; Taylor powers Salem

5/31 Cup of Coffee: The Sox affiliates won only two of their five contests on a full Thursday slate that was marked by some strong individual performances. Greenville and Salem split 11-inning contests, with Nelly Taylor at the center of Salem's win while Kristian Campbell (pictured) continued to shine for the Drive. Zach Penrod impressed in his Triple-A debut as the WooSox came away victorious. Portland fell despite the efforts of Kyle Teel, while the FCL Sox were held to only two hits in their defeat.

-----

Zach Penrod had a strong Triple-A debut to lead the WooSox. The 26-year-old lefty worked around five hits (all singles) in four scoreless innings, striking out five against a pair of walks. The one negative for Penrod was his inefficiency, as he needed 74 pitches to work through those four frames. Isaiah Campbell worked a scoreless fifth as part of his rehab assignment before giving way to Grant Gambrell, who allowed one unearned run in four innings to get credit for the win. Tyler Heineman delivered the key hit, blasting a two-run second-inning homer that gave Worcester a lead it would not relinquish. Heineman added a single, walk, and a stolen base. Bobby Dalbec was 2 for 4 with a double, walk, and an RBI. Chase Meidroth and Niko Kavadas also doubled in the victory.

Cup of Coffee: Fitts flirts with perfection; Campbell and Mayer stay hot

5/30 Cup of Coffee:
Boston's minor-league affiliates went 2-2 on Wednesday. Richard Fitts (pictured) took a perfect game into the eighth inning of Worcester's win over Charlotte. Marcelo Mayer and Tyler McDonough each went deep as Portland came away victorious against Altoona. Kristian Campbell continues to swing a hot bat for Greenville while Freili Encarnacion and Marvin Alcantara combined for four hits in Salem's loss to Lynchburg.

-----

Richard Fitts helped Worcester end a six-game losing streak by flirting with perfection on Wednesday night. The righty yielded one unearned run on one hit and zero walks to go along with seven strikeouts over seven-plus dominant innings. He retired the first 21 batters he faced before giving up a leadoff single in the bottom of the eighth. At that point, Lucas Luetge took over, and another unearned run crossed the plate on his watch. Bailey Horn tossed a scoreless ninth inning to close it out.

Cup of Coffee: Teel homers, Contreras has big night for WooSox

5/29 Cup of Coffee
: It was a slow night for the Sox' affiliates, as all five teams lost. Chase Meidroth and Mark Contrereas (pictured) each had productive nights for Worcester, and Kyle Teel blasted a home run for Portland. Chase Shugart and Max Carlson had notable relief outings for Worcester and Salem.

-----

Chase Meidroth had a great night from the top spot in the batting order, reaching base four times in five trips with three singles and a hit-by-pitch. He also stole his eighth base of the year. Mark Contreras was phenomenal from the bottom spot in the order, going 3 for 4 with his third bomb of the year and two runs scored. Corey Rosier belted a home run and took a walk, while Bobby Dalbec singled, walked twice, and knocked in a run. Naoyuki Uwasawa started and took the loss, surrendering five earned runs over 4 1/3 frames. He struck out four and walked a pair. Isaiah Campbell tossed a clean inning with one strikeout, and Chase Shugart struck out four and walked none over two innings, although he allowed three earned runs.

Minor Notes: Perales and Penrod promoted; Mata shut down

It was a mix of good and bad news on the pitching front last week, with promotions for Luis Perales and Zach Penrod balanced by tough injury news for Garrett Whitlock and Bryan Mata

-----

Perales and Penrod promoted
Two of the system's best pitchers got rewarded with promotions last week. Luis Perales got promoted to Portland, while Zach Penrod moved to Worcester. Perales has been extremely impressive, striking out 46 in just 26 1/3 innings. His 3.42 ERA is outstanding, considering he has been unlucky with a .474 batting average on balls in play. His fastball has been up to 99 and sitting around 96-97.

Penrod's numbers look better on the surface than Perales's, though part of that is the benefit of pitching in front of a strong Portland defense. His ERA with the Sea Dogs was 2.80, and he had a 53-to-13 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 35 1/3 innings. The 26-year-old will be the sole left-hander in the Worcester rotation.

Cup of Coffee: Cespedes, Arias lead FCL Sox

5/28 Cup of Coffee:
One of these years, minor league baseball will figure out how to find flexibility with its usual Tuesday-through-Sunday schedule in order to get some games on a Monday holiday. Until that time, Yoeilin Cespedes (pictured) is around to provide an entire farm system's worth of highlights.

------

Yoeilin Cespedes, Franklin Arias, and Ovis Portes have been three of the FCL Sox' most reliable performers in their season's first month, and all three played prominent roles in Monday's victory. Cespedes had half of the Sox' four hits, including a decisive two-run homer in the sixth inning that gave his team a lead they wouldn't relinquish. He finished 2 for 3 with a walk and three runs driven in. Arias was also on base three times, tallying a single and two walks. He also stole a base and scored two runs as he raised his on-base percentage to .429. It was a rare quiet day at the plate for Andruw Musett, who failed to reach base for only the second time all season.

Cup of Coffee: Alvarez, Campbell, and Mayer all homer; Bleis extends hitting streak

5/27 Cup of Coffee:
Boston's minor-league affiliates went 1-3 on Sunday. Jamie Westbrook, Tyler Heineman, and Eddy Alvarez (pictured) hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in Worcester's loss to Norfolk. Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell went yard for the fifth and seventh times this season, respectively. Miguel Bleis and Nelly Taylor extended their hitting streaks in Salem's win over Fayetteville.

-----

The WooSox suffered their fifth straight loss on Sunday. Josh Winckowski got the start on the mound and allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits, one walk, and four strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings. Luis Guerrero struck out three across 1 2/3 scoreless frames of relief. Eddy Alvarez led the way offensively by going 3 for 3 with two home runs, three RBIs, three runs scored, and one walk. Jamie Westbrook went 2 for 3 with a double and homer while Tyler Heineman went deep for his lone hit of the afternoon. Chase Meidroth doubled in two runs while Mark Contreras went 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI triple, and two runs scored.

Cup of Coffee: Bleis and Kavadas homer; Early tosses six shutout innings

5/26 Cup of Coffee:
It was a strong night for offenses across the system on Saturday, though the pitching had up-and-down results. Niko Kavadas helped Worcester again, while Tyler McDonough (pictured) had a career day for Portland. Cutter Coffey and Connelly Early led Greenville to a hard-fought win, while home runs for Miguel Bleis and Antonio Anderson were not enough for Salem.
-----

A four-run ninth inning pushed the Tides past the WooSox. Niko Kavadas launched his 10th home run and laced an RBI single as he went 2 for 4. Nick Sogard hit his seventh home run, a two-run shot that opened the scoring in the first. Bobby Dalbec went 2 for 5 with a double and an outfield assist but also committed an error and struck out twice. Jason Alexander turned in a quality start, working around 10 hits to allow three earned runs over six innings. Isaiah Campbell followed with another scoreless rehab appearance, while Jorge Benitez was tagged for four runs while recording two outs in the ninth.

Cup of Coffee: 3 RBI for McElveney; Greenville gets 1-hit

5/24 Cup of Coffee:
It was a tough day on the farm, as the affiliates went a combined 2-4. Portland almost made it an even 3-3 to sweep a doubleheader against Hartford, but Marcelo Mayer, who came on to pinch hit in the second half of a doubleheader, flew out representing the winning run. Meanwhile, Salem was one-hit, the FCL Red Sox surrendered an eighth-inning lead, and Worcester left 11 runners on base. It wasn't all bad, however. Salem came back to win with a four-run eighth, as Daniel McElveny (pictured) recorded a home run and three RBI. A trio of Worcester hitters also had three base hits apiece in Chase MeidrothNick Sogard, and Dalton Guthrie.

-----

Worcester exploded for 13 hits, but it wasn't enough as the Sox left 11 runners on base and were just 4 for 15 with runners in scoring position. Chase Meidroth, Nick Sogard and Dalton Guthrie each had three knocks, while Jamie Westbrook had a pair of doubles. It was a short outing for Grant Gambrell, who couldn't complete the fourth and exited after 3 2/3 innings. He was saddled with the loss despite allowing just two earned runs on three hits and four walks. Most of the Norfolk runs were charged to Sal Romano, as he allowed five runners to cross the plate in just two innings of work. Chase Shugart handled the final 3 1/3 innings with six strikeouts.

Cup of Coffee: Encarnacion, Andy Lugo power Salem win

5/24 Cup of Coffee:
Salem picked up Thursday's only victory down on the farm. Freili Encarnacion (pictured) and Andy Lugo both contributed in multiple ways in support of a strong Blake Wehunt effort on the mound. Marcelo Mayer added yet another double and Bryan Mata worked a rehab outing in Portland's loss, while Worcester failed to hold its lead to a prospect-rich Norfolk squad.

-----

The WooSox squandered several opportunities, going 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position as a three-run ninth pushed the Tides to victory. Jamie Westbrook was the highlight at the plate, going 2 for 5 with a solo homer in the seventh. Starter Richard Fitts allowed one run on three hits in five innings, striking out and walking three apiece. Ryan Zeferjahn was touched for his first earned run of the season in his 12th appearance between Double-A and Triple-A. Zeferjahn's streak came to an end on a home run off the bat of top prospect Jackson Holliday.

Cup of Coffee: Romero nearly hits for cycle; Lugo and Teel combine for 7 RBIs

5/23 Cup of Coffee:
Boston's minor-league affiliates won two and lost two on a Wednesday that featured plenty of offense across the board. Nick Sogard and Bobby Dalbec homered in Worcester's loss to Norfolk. Up the road at Hadlock Field, Kyle Teel and Matthew Lugo combined for seven RBIs in Portland's comeback win over Hartford. At the lower levels, Mikey Romero (pictured) and Miguel Ugueto led the way at the plate for Greenville while Nelly Taylor did the same in Salem.

-----

Nick Sogard stayed hot at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a walk and his second home run in as many days. Bobby Dalbec also went deep for the sixth time this season and added an RBI single. Niko Kavadas was responsible for Worcester's only other run, as he knocked in Nathan Hickey with an RBI single of his own. Naoyuki Uwasawa went three innings in his start, allowing four earned runs on four hits, three walks, and three strikeouts. Isaiah Campbell struck out three of the four batters he faced in the first appearance of his rehab assignment. Justin Hagenman followed with three more scoreless frames of relief before Jorge Benitez surrendered the game-winning home run in the top of the ninth.

Cup of Coffee: Perales fans 12, Mayer homers, WooSox score 20

5/22 Cup of Coffee
: Last night was filled with runs and huge offensive performances, as the WooSox scored 20 runs behind six home runs, while Greenville scored 15. Enmanuel Valdez hit two more home runs, and Marcelo Mayer homered in the second of two games for Portland. Luis Perales (pictured) was incredible, turning in his best start of the year for Greenville. Yoeilin Cespedes also hit a massive home run in the FCL Sox' win.

-----

The Sox blasted six home runs and scored in every inning except the second in this rout. Enmanuel Valdez continued to mash for Worcester, going 2 for 4 with two home runs, two walks, and four runs scored. Eddy Alvarez had a monster game as well with three hits, including two home runs and six RBI. Nathan Hickey and Nick Sogard hit the other long balls for the WooSox. Minor Notes: Mata ramps up rehab, Whitlock has ligament damage

The Red Sox are winners of two straight coming into play on Tuesday, but the month of May still hasn't treated the club too well. Most notably, a member of Boston's starting rotation could miss the rest of the season. On the minor-league front, Bryan Mata is rehabbing, Zach Penrod is dominating, and Mikey Romero is returning to action. We cover all of that, and much more, in the latest installment of our weekly notes.

-----

Whitlock diagnosed with ligament damage
Garrett Whitlock (pictured) has ligament damage in his throwing elbow and may require surgery, Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters following Monday night's 5-0 win over the Rays. The right-hander will visit an orthopedist in Birmingham, Ala. later this week to confirm the diagnosis and further evaluate his options.

Cup of Coffee: Cespedes doubles twice, Asencio collects three hits in FCL

5/21 Cup of Coffee: As usual for a Monday, the FCL Sox were the only team on the schedule. After falling into a very 4-0 deficit, the Sox were able to mount a comeback to move to 7-5 on the year.

-----

Monday's contest got off to a fast start, with the two teams combining for seven first-inning runs. Yoeilin Cespedes (pictured) and Yosander Asencio were at the center of the Sox rally. Cespedes ripped an RBI double to get the Sox on the board, his first of two doubles on the day. He then came home on the first of three hits off the bat of Asencio, who would drive in three runs overall. Andruw Musset and Karim Ayubi had two hits apiece in the winning effort.

Boston's minor-league affiliates went 2-3 on Sunday. Jhostynxon Garcia (pictured) hit a game-tying homer and drove in two insurance runs in Salem's comeback win over Augusta. Connelly Early struck out five over five innings in Greenville's loss to Winston-Salem. Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, and Kyle Teel combined for five hits as Portland fell to Somerset. Cup of Coffee: Penrod strikes out 10, Mata starts for Greenville

5/19 Cup of Coffee: Zach Penrod (pictured) pitched another gem to lead Portland past Somerset. Bryan Mata is getting closer to a full return as he made a rehab start in Greenville. In the lower minors, Miguel Bleis drove in three runs and Yoeilin Cespedes returned to shortstop and drove in two.

Cup of Coffee: Mayer with two hits; Dalbec homers again

5/18 Cup of Coffee: There were three triples on the farm on Friday in the Red Sox system, while Bobby Dalbec went yard again, but it was a lot of walks and station-to-station baseball as only Portland was held to fewer than five runs. The only problem for the affiliates was their opposition was able to score too, resulting in a 3-2 record on the night. The hits were frequently concentrated within a a few players, as Marcelo Mayer was one of 13 hitters to record two or more hits, though Armando Sierra stood alone as the only one with three knocks.

-----

It was another high-scoring affair in Worcester, but the WooSox came out on top after the RailRiders went up 6-2 after three innings as a three-run eighth did the job. Worcester had just eight hits, including two each from Enmanual Valdez, Jamie Westbrook and Eddy Alvarez, but seven walks and a hit-by-pitch helped put runners on base and pressure the opposing pitchers. Six runs went on Richard Fitts' tab, who lasted just three innings in a starting role. He was followed by Justin Hagenman, who contributed 3 1/3 frames and built a bridge to the bullpen with just two runs allowed.

------

It was just seven hits for Portland, as a two-spot in the eighth wasn't enough to seriously threaten Somerset. Marcelo Mayer and Mickey Gasper each had two hits. Mayer's double in the first was the team's only extra-base hit. Each squad committed three errors and Portland starter Isaac Coffey felt the brunt of that, as three of the seven runs he allowed over his 4 2/3 innings of work were unearned.

-----

Greenville got out quickly, scoring a trio in the second inning that proved to be enough to secure a victory. Seven of the nine Drive hitters had a hit, led by multi-hit outings from Mikey Romero, Ronald Rosario and Caden Rose. The starting nod went to Juan Daniel Encarnacion and he gave his team five innings of work with two runs on five hits. He struck out six. Reidis Sena and Caleb Bolden held it down out of the bullpen, as Bolden had a clean ninth and Sena scattered just one hit over three innings.

-----

Trailing 3-1 after six frames, Salem scored four runs in the seventh and held on for the win. The Red Sox had nine hits, but only five hitters contributed to that tally, as Miguel Bleis, Natanael Yuten, Nelly Taylor and Fraymi De Leon each had a pair of knocks. Blake Wehunt earned the start and struggled with three runs allowed over 3 2/3 innings. They came on three hits and three walks, though he did strike out four. Conor Steinbaugh and CJ Wein combined for 5 1/3 innings of one-hit ball, combining for nine strikeouts and one walk.

-----

The Red Sox led 6-4 after six innings, but the Twins plated six in the seventh and shut down the Red Sox offense to secure a win. All six tallies were charged to Denis Reguillo, who was able to record just one out. Wuilliams Rodriguez, who recorded the final two outs of the seventh, was the only Red Sox arm to not allow a run. Offensively, Armando Sierra had three of his team's eight hits, while Frederick Jimenez contributed with two more.

------

Player of the Day: Another day, another productive performance for Marcelo Mayer. The second-ranked prospect in the system has shown his offensive prowess all season and continued that with a two-hit performance, including a first-inning double, against Somerset. He's only got three home runs but has shown plenty of gap power, as he's already up to 16 doubles on the year.

Cup of Coffee: Sogard walks off Worcester in two-homer night; O'Donnell perfect for Salem

5/17 Cup of Coffee: It was a busy night on the farm, with all five stateside affiliates in action, a run of perfection for Salem, and enough offense in Polar Park to cover the system. Nick Sogard (pictured, left) has made a name for himself with his defense and positional flexibility, but he carried the offense on a night in which the two teams combined for 28 hits. Trennor O'Donnell went five perfect innings in the first start of his professional career. The Gonzalezes ruled the day elsewhere: Wikelman Gonzalez led Portland on the mound, while Bryan Gonzalez (no relation) powered Greenville to victory.

-----

Nick Sogard was at the center of the Polar Park offensive explosion that included 14 hits, seven walks, and four home runs. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Sogard blasted a walk-off homer. It was the second round-tripper of the night for the 26-year old, who also had a two-run shot in the fourth. Overall, Sogard finished 4 for 6 with four RBI and four runs scored. Bobby Dalbec delivered a three-run blast in the first inning, while Pablo Reyes tagged old friend Oddanier Mosquedo with a three-run shot in the sixth. Chase Meidroth continues to be an on-base machine, picking up two singles and a walk.

Cup of Coffee: Bleis, Mayer stay hot; Bastardo strikes out eight

5/16 Cup of Coffee:
Boston's minor-league affiliates went 1-3 on Wednesday. Garrett Whitlock was efficient in his rehab start for Worcester. Marcelo Mayer tallied two hits and Angel Bastardo (pictured) recorded eight strikeouts in Portland's loss to Somerset. Mikey Romero tripled and scored a run in his season debut for Greenville. Miguel Bleis kept things rolling at the plate while four pitchers combined to give up only one unearned in Salem's win over Augusta.

-----

In the first and perhaps only start of his rehab assignment, Garrett Whitlock was sharp for Worcester. The righty scattered two hits and one walk with five strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings. He finished with 61 pitches (40 strikes) and induced 12 swings-and-misses. Josh Winckowski, making his first appearance since being optioned over the weekend, took the loss after surrendering the game's only run in the top of the seventh. Luis Guerrero and Ryan Zeferjahn combined for two scoreless frames of relief. At the plate, Chase Meidroth and Enmanuel Valdez each drew two walks. Pablo Reyes, in his first action of any kind since late April, went 1 for 3 with a walk and stolen base.

Cup of Coffee: Top four prospects in the system combine for 10 hits

5/15 Cup of Coffee
: It was a phenomenal night for the top four prospects in the system. Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, Kyle Teel (pictured), and Miguel Bleis each picked up multiple hits, leading Portland and Salem to wins. The WooSox offense was also great, as Enmanuel Valdez homered again.

-----

Mark Contreras led the offense by going 2 for 4 with a double, a home run, and three RBI. Bobby Dalbec and Nathan Hickey each had two hits as well, with Dalbec doubling and scoring twice, while Hickey singled twice, walked, and scored two runs. Enmanuel Valdez ripped another home run, his fourth of the year for the WooSox. Jason Alexander pitched well, surrendering three runs over five innings of work on the way to his second win. The right-hander struck out six, the third time he's reached that mark this year in eight starts. Chase Shugart and Lucas Luetge were each very good out of the bullpen, as they each tossed two innings and struck out four without a walk. Shugart allowed one run.

Cup of Coffee: Mata makes rehab outing as Musett powers FCL Sox

5/14 Cup of Coffee:
The FCL Sox were the only team in action Monday, featuring a return to the mound by a rehabbing Bryan Mata. Andrew Musett (pictured) and Yoeilin Cespedes led an offense that provided plenty of support.

-----

The FCL Sox had 17 baserunners on their way to a 10-run outburst. Andrew Musett continues to dominate, going 3 for 4 with a pair of RBI. Mussett has now reached safely 14 times in 24 plate appearances. Yoeilin Cespedes ripped an RBI double in the fifth inning and added a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Franklin Arias tripled and walked as part of his 2-for-4 afternoon. Cup of Coffee: Penrod K's 10, Sikes homers as Portland ends five-game skid

5/13 Cup of Coffee:
Boston's minor-league affiliates went 3-1 on Sunday. Chase Meidroth and Niko Kavadas combined for three hits in Worcester's shutout loss to Buffalo. Zach Penrod struck out 10 and Phillip Sikes (pictured) homered in a much-needed win for Portland. Cooper Adams and Tyler Miller headlined Greenville's victory over Hickory. Matt Duffy put the finishing touches on a solid week of pitching for Salem by tossing five scoreless innings in Columbia.

Grant Gambrell took the loss, though he only allowed one earned run on four hits, two walks, and one strikeout over three innings. Sal Romano produced a similar line out of the bullpen, as he also gave up one run in three innings of relief. On an otherwise quiet afternoon offensively, Chase Meidroth went 2 for 4 while Niko Kavadas went 1 for 3 with a walk and second-inning single to extend his hitting streak to nine games.

Cup of Coffee: Sandlin scratched with forearm tightness; Kavadas homers again

5/12 Cup of Coffee:
It was a tough night on the farm with a couple of injury concerns for top-20 prospects. Blaze Jordan was injured on a play at the plate, and David Sandlin was scratched with forearm tightness. Juan Daniel Encarnacion (pictured) filled in admirably for Sandlin, while Niko Kavadas homered again for Worcester.

-----

Niko Kavadas launched his fourth home run in his last six games to lead the WooSox past the Bisons. Kavadas's ninth home run came as part of a 3-for-4 day that raised his OPS to 1.180. Mark Contreras went 2 for 4 with his first home run, and Nick Sogard went 1 for 3 with a walk. The start went to Bailey Horn, who did not allow a run over the first two innings. Richard Fitts worked as a piggyback starter, going the next 4 1/3 innings while surrendering one run. He walked three and struck out two as he improved to 3-1. Ryan Zeferjahn finished the game with two more scoreless innings to keep his ERA at 0.00. He did not give up a hit while striking out three.

Cup of Coffee: Salem no-hits Columbia for 10-plus innings, Mayer knocks two hits

5/11 Cup of Coffee:
The high minors hit the over, as Worcester's loss had 19 runs, while Portland's defeat had 15. The low minors? Not so much. Greenville crossed the plate just once in a shutout, while Salem had a combined no-hitter through nine innings, but went to extras because it hadn't been able to score. In the complex league, the Red Sox's furious comeback bid fell a run short. Niko Kavadas had the only home run in the system, while Noah Dean had five no-hit innings with two walks and five strikeouts. Trennor O'Donnell (pictured) also walked a pair over his four innings that followed and even though the automatic runner scored, CJ Weims had a hitless 10th, but it ended in the 11th.

-----

There was plenty of offense in western New York, but the Red Sox were unable to hold onto a 7-4 lead after five innings, fueled by a five-run second inning. Despite the lofty run total, Worcester recorded just six hits and no hitter had more than one and Niko Kavadas, who went deep in the third, had the only extra-base hit. Naoyuki Uwasawa took the mound and contributed four innings, with five hits and a walk turning into three runs. He also struck out two Bisons. Four other arms combined to complete the remaining four frames, but Melvin Adon, who had 1 1/3 scoreless innings, was the highlight.

Cup of Coffee: Mayer doubles thrice; Cespedes mades FCL debut

5/10 Cup of Coffee:
Sox affiliates earned a split on Thursday, going 3-3 while the major league squad rested. Much of the organizational news came out of the FCL, where Yoeilin Cespedes made his season debut. He was joined by a trio of players on rehab: 2022 first-round pick Mikey Romero, 21st-ranked Yordanny Monegro, and Chih-Jung Liu. Kristian Campbell went deep again as Greenville split a doubleheader, while Jhostynxon Garcia homered in Salem's win. Marcelo Mayer (pictured) and Angel Bastardo provided highlights in a Portland loss

-----

Worcester had 15 baserunners but had trouble converting them to runs, going just 2 for 9 with runners in scoring position. Dalton Guthrie was 1 for 3 with a single, walk, run scored, RBI, and stolen base. Nick Sogard reached via walk three times, while Niko Kavadas doubled for the team's only extra-base hit. Kavadas is now riding a six-game hitting streak. Jason Alexander took the loss, allowing five runs (two earned) in four innings. Lucas Luetge followed, striking out three in two scoreless innings of relief. Luis Guerrero surrendered a run on three hits in his two innings of work, striking out two without issuing a walk.

-----

The Sea Dogs fell despite a big evening from Marcelo Mayer. The organization's second-ranked prospect ripped three doubles in four at-bats, adding a walk, RBI and run scored. Nick Yorke and Kyle Teel both chipped in with two hits and a walk apiece. Angel Bastardo had cruised through five scoreless innings, striking out 10 and allowing just two hits. However, he surrendered a walk, double, and another walk in the sixth inning and all three bequeathed runners came on to score, giving him a line of three runs allowed in the five frames.

-----

The Drive resumed their Wednesday night contest that was suspended in the bottom of the first inning before the regularly scheduled event, creating a de facto doubleheader. After Hayden Mullins allowed an unearned run in the first on Wednesday, Bryce Bonnin took over when the game resumed. The 2020 third-round pick of the Reds gave up a pair of runs in two innings, striking out three and walking two. Nathan Landry went three scoreless innings of relief, striking out two, walking one, and giving up three hits. Cade Feeney struck out four in three innings without allowing a walk, surrendering one run on three hits. After scoring a pair of runs on four hits in the first inning Wednesday, the bats were silenced by a quartet of Hickory hurlers. Bryan Gonzalez doubled for one of the team's two additional hits. Kristian Campbell had also doubled, scoring a run.

Some excellent pitching and a pair of home runs propelled the Drive to a split. Luis Perales allowed a home run to the first batter he faced but settled in quickly. He finished with two runs allowed on four hits in four innings. He struck out eight while walking one, and he now has an impressive 29 strikeouts against just six walks in 17 innings on the year.  Reidis Sena worked two scoreless innings of relief to get credit for the win, while Caleb Bolden struck out a pair in a perfect seventh to record his fourth save of the year. At the plate, Kristian Campbell went deep for the fourth time in his last eight games. Caden Rose also went deep, launching a two-run shot in the second inning.

-----

Salem continued its recent strong play, winning for the fifth time in seven contests. Freili Encarnacion was a spark plug, scoring a pair of runs while going 2 for 3 with a walk. Miguel Bleis also reached base three times with a single, walk, and hit batsman, swiping his 10th base of the season. Jhostynxon Garcia delivered a solo home run in the second inning on the day when it was confirmed that his brother Johanfran would miss the rest of the season with a major knee injury.

Jedixson Paez turned in his typically solid outing, allowing two runs on three hits in five innings, walking one while striking out six. Jojo Ingrassia was dominant, firing three hitless innings of relief to get the win and striking out eight of the 10 batters he faced. Ingrassia allowed one walk for his lone baserunner. Nathanael Cruz gave up one unearned run in the ninth to pick up the save.

-----

It was a big afternoon in Fort Myers, where a trio of rehabbers were joined by a debuting Yoeilin Cespedes in the win. Cespedes played his first official stateside game after an outstanding run the DSL last season. The system's fifth-ranked prospect got the start at DH, going 1 for 5 with three strikeouts. Mikey Romero was 3 for 5 with a double, RBI, and two runs scored. Catcher Andruw Mussett had a big day at the plate, going 2 for 3 with two walks and two RBI. Karim Ayubi doubled and walked twice as part of a 2-for-3 effort.

On the mound, rehabbing right-handers Yordanny Monegro and Chih-Jung Liu had nearly identical outings. Both allowed three hits in three shutout innings without issuing a walk. Starter Monegro struck out four batters, while Liu followed with five punchouts.

-----

Player of the Day: Marcelo Mayer continues to pile up the doubles. With three more on Thursday night, Mayer now has an organization-leading 12 on the season, ranking him fourth in minor league baseball. He has 20 in 278 Double-A at-bats going back to last year and 61 in 195 career full-season minor league games. Mayer has crushed right-handed pitching this year, going .346/.388/.590 in 85 plate appearances with nearly as many extra-base hits (13) as strikeouts (15).

Cup of Coffee: Kavadas and Mayer both homer; Shugart tosses five scoreless

5/9 Cup of Coffee:
Boston's minor-league affiliates went 1-3 on Wednesday. Niko Kavadas (pictured) was one of four players to homer as Worcester split a doubleheader against Buffalo. In Portland, Marcelo Mayer went deep and Roman Anthony had two hits as the Sea Dogs came up short against Binghamton. Greenville's game against Hickory at Fluor Field was suspended in the first inning due to rain. Luis Cohen went at least five innings for the third straight start in Salem's loss to Columbia.

-----

Brian Van Belle took the loss in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader. The right-hander surrendered nine earned runs on nine hits (including one homer), four walks, and five strikeouts over four innings. Ryan Zeferjahn took over for Van Belle and allowed two unearned runs across two innings in his Triple-A debut. Both of Worcester's runs came by way of the long ball, as Enmanuel Valdez and Mark Kolozsvary each went deep. Niko Kavadas also went 2 for 2 with a walk.

-----

Minor Notes: May rankings released, FCL Sox get underway

It's a fun week for some of the younger top prospects in the system, as the Florida Complex League has begun. We have also announced a new rankings list for May, with a few key players graduating.

-----

May rankings released
We have announced the newest update to the system's prospect rankings. Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, and David Hamilton have all graduated. The top three spots remain the same as before, while Miguel Bleis and Yoeilin Cespedes each move up a spot. Nazzan Zanetello also takes a four-spot leap that lands him back in the top 10. You can check out the rankings history here.

FCL Sox begin season
The Florida Complex League has gotten underway, as their first game was yesterday. Check out the recap in the Cup of Coffee. The biggest name to watch is Yoeilin Cespedes, who was just bumped into the number five spot in the May rankings. He was also listed as one of the "10 Players to Watch in the 2024 Florida Complex League" by Josh Norris of Baseball America. He hit .346/.392/.560 in 46 games for the DSL Sox last year. Franklin Arias, who is currently ranked 22nd in the system, is the only other player on the FCL roster who is ranked in the top 30. Arias is an 18-year-old shortstop who was signed as an international free agent in January of 2023. Last year with the DSL Sox, he hit .350/.440/.453 in 37 games with 11 extra-base hits, 19 walks, and only 14 strikeouts.

New podcast episode
Speaking of the FCL, Ian Cundall and Chris Clegg got together on the latest edition of the SoxProspects.com podcast to discuss the release of the FCL roster. They also dive into what they've seen from the other levels of the minors this past month.

Sox option Valdez, Dalbec to Worcester
With the additions of Zack Short and Vaughn Grissom to the major league roster, Boston sent Bobby Dalbec and Enmanuel Valdez back to Triple-A. Dalbec and Valdez were both struggling to get it going on the offensive side, as Dalbec was hitting .132 with a .377 OPS, while Valdez was hitting .156 with a .452 OPS. Since going 0 for 5 in his first Triple-A game, Valdez is 6 for 11 with three doubles and a home run over his last three games with the WooSox. Dalbec has also been swinging a hot bat in Worcester, hitting .300/.462/.600 with a home run over three games.

Players of the Week for April 29-May 5

Kristian Campbell, INF/OF, Greenville Drive
5 G, 20 AB, 10 H, 2 2B, 3 HR, 5 R, 7 RBI, .500/.545/1.050

Campbell (pictured) had a huge week for Greenville to raise his season slash line to .288/.390/.561 over 18 games. Primarily a second baseman, Campbell has also seen action in center field this season. The 21-year-old right-handed hitter was drafted last season by Boston in the fourth round out of Georgia Tech. After tearing up rookie ball last year to the tune of a 1.082 OPS in eight games, Campbell played 14 games with the Drive where he continued to play well, hitting .267/.400/.422. Campbell took home another SoxProspects.com Player of the Week award back in September of last season. He was bumped up from 22nd to 20th in the newest rankings update.

Blake Wehunt, RHP, Salem Red Sox
1 G, 1-0, 5 IP, 0.00 ERA, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K

The Pitcher of the Week award also goes to a 2023 draft pick. Wehunt was selected by the Sox in the ninth round last year out of Kennesaw State. The righty is off to a tremendous start in 2024, posting a 1.15 ERA over four starts. He has tossed 15 2/3 innings with 20 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of just .148. He features a fastball around 93-94 MPH along with a slider and a splitter. Wehunt was also named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for this past week as well. He is currently ranked 38th in the system.

Cup of Coffee: Lugo lifts Portland with homer; Wehunt dazzles for Salem

5/6 Cup of Coffee:
Boston's minor-league affiliates went a perfect 4-0 on Sunday. Chase Meidroth headlined Worcester's power surge at Polar Park. Matthew Lugo once again came through in crunch time for Portland at Hadlock Field. Luis Ravelo hit a three-run home run in Greenville's convincing win over Asheville. On the mound, Blake Wehunt (pictured) tossed another gem for Salem.

-----

The top third of the lineup feasted at the plate, combining for nine of Worcester's 12 hits. Leadoff man Chase Meidroth went 2 for 4 with a double, a home run, two RBIs, two runs scored, and one walk. Enmanuel Valdez doubled three times as part of a 4 for 4 day in which he scored three runs, drew one walk, and stole two bases. Romy Gonzalez went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and one run scored. Like Meidroth, Bobby Dalbec and Niko Kavadas homered as well, with the former crushing a 444-foot solo shot for his second of the year and the latter drilling a 425-foot three-run blast for his sixth.

In an effort to manage his workload, Richard Fitts went just 3 2/3 innings in his sixth start of the season. The 24-year-old right-hander allowed one earned run on two hits, one walk, and four strikeouts. He threw 56 pitches (42 strikes) and induced a game-high 10 swings-and-misses. Out of the Worcester bullpen, Luis Guerrero, Bailey Horn, and Melvin Adon combined for 5 1/3 scoreless, one-hit frames of relief. Guerrero earned the winning decision to improve to 2-1 while Horn (making his organizational debut) faced the minimum in the top of the seventh.

-----

Isaac Coffey was solid in his fourth start of the season for Portland. The 23-year-old righty allowed only one earned run on two hits, three walks, and one hit batsman with three strikeouts over six quality innings of work. Of the 84 pitches he threw, 49 went for strikes and nine were whiff-inducing. Out of the Sea Dogs bullpen, Jacob Webb and Felix Cepeda combined for three scoreless frames of relief. Webb notched the winning decision to improve to 2-0 while Cepeda recorded his fifth save in six opportunities.

On an otherwise quiet afternoon for the Sea Dogs lineup at Hadlock Field, Matthew Lugo came through in the clutch with a go-ahead, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The homer was the seventh of the season for Lugo, who went 2 for 2 with a walk. Portland's only other extra-base hit belonged to Blaze Jordan, who went 1 for 4 with a fourth-inning double to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.

-----

Ronald Rosario went 2 for 5 with an RBI double that opened the scoring. Enderso Lira also enjoyed a multi-hit day, going 2 for 4 with an RBI and run scored out of the nine-hole. Allan Castro doubled for his lone hit of the afternoon while adding a walk, stolen base, and two runs scored. Tyler Miller plated Castro with a run-scoring double in the seventh inning. Luis Ravelo made his only hit count by clubbing a go-ahead, three-run home run with two outs in the top of the fifth.

Juan Encarnacion went 4 2/3 innings in his fourth start of the season for Greenville. The 23-year-old right-hander yielded two earned runs on seven hits, two walks, and eight strikeouts. He finished with 82 pitches (52 strikes) and induced 15 swings-and-misses. Gabriel Jackson (who picked up the win) and Reidis Sena then combined for 4 1/3 scoreless frames out of the Drive bullpen.

-----

Blake Wehunt recorded the first winning decision of his professional career in Salem on Sunday. The Kennesaw State product yielded just one hit and zero walks (one hit batsman) while striking out eight of the 17 batters he faced over five strong innings. Of the 75 pitches he threw, 48 went for strikes and 14 were whiff-inducing. Conor Steinbaugh and Royman Blanco combined to give up one run in four innings to close things out.

Marvin Alcantara led the way offensively by going 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI triple that turned into a little-league home run as a result of a throwing error. Miguel Bleis went 2 for 4 with a run scored while Nelly Taylor doubled in a run as part of a 1 for 4 afternoon. Jhostynxon Garcia went 0 for 3 with a walk in his first appearance since April 19.

-----

Player of the Day: Blake Wehunt lowered his ERA on the 2024 campaign to 1.15 after tossing five more scoreless innings for Salem on Sunday afternoon. The 23-year-old righty has held opposing hitters to a .148 batting average against to begin his first full professional season. He is currently ranked as the No. 38 prospect in the organization.

Cup of Coffee: FCL season begins; Gonzalez strikes out eight

5/5 Cup of Coffee: The FCL season opened with a tough loss for the Red Sox. Justin Hagenman and Wikelman Gonzalez (pictured) starred for Worcester and Portland, respectively, while Roman Anthony played well in both doubleheader games. The offense faltered in Greenville and Salem as a strong start from David Sandlin went for naught.

-----

Four pitchers combined on a shutout, led by starter Justin Hagenman. He struck out eight of four innings of two-hit ball while walking one. Robert Kwiatkowski needed just 41 pitches to get through his three innings, and Sal Romano and Brendan Cellucci each added scoreless innings to close it out. It was an offensively well-balanced attack, with eight starters collecting at least one hit. Bobby Dalbec led the way going 2 for 4, while Enmanuel Valdez went 1 for 4 with a two-run single. Dalton Guthrie went 2 for 3 with a double, and Niko Kavadas went 1 for 3 with a walk.

Cup of Coffee: Big nights by Bleis, Lugo power affiliates to sweep

5/4 Cup of Coffee:
Some big offensive performances and across-the-board excellent pitching propelled the Sox system to a Friday-night sweep. Miguel Bleis (pictured) and Nazzan Zanetello supported Jedixson Paez in a Salem shutout. Matthew Lugo continued his resurgent 2024 and extended his hitting streak as Portland's offense exploded at Hadlock. Luis Perales and Kristian Campbell provided the highlights for Greenville, while Niko Kavadas sparked a game-winning rally for the WooSox.

-----

A solo home run off the bat of Enmanuel Valdez in the first inning kicked things off as Worcester won for the fourth time in five games. Corey Rosier did not record an out, going 2 for 2 with two walks and two RBI. Niko Kavadas keyed the game-winning rally in the eighth, delivering an RBI double to snap a 2-2 tie and then coming on to score on a Rosier single. Jamie Westbrook also notched a pair of hits.  Romy Gonzalez began his rehab stint, batting second in the designated hitter role. He was 0 for 2 on the night. Jason Alexander gave up three hits across 5 1/3 scoreless frames, walking three against two strikeouts. Veteran lefty Lucas Luetge earned the win in relief, striking out a pair and allowing just one hit in 2 2/3 innings.

-----

The Portland lineup exploded for 15 hits, including another four-hit night by scorching-hot Matthew Lugo. Lugo extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a 4-for-5 performance, blasting a fourth-inning solo homer and adding another RBI with a single in the sixth. The home run was the sixth of the season for the 2019 second-round pick, surpassing last year's total. Roman Anthony, Nick Yorke, and Blaze Jordan each delivered two hits and a walk apiece. Marcelo Mayer doubled for the third straight game, giving him eight in his last 13 contests.

The offensive outburst was more than enough support for an in-control Hunter Dobbins. The 24-year-old righty gave up one run on four hits in five innings. He struck out eight without issuing a walk, throwing 52 of 76 pitches for strikes. Christopher Troye surrendered a pair of runs in the sixth. Wyatt Olds dominated, firing three scoreless frames, surrendering one hit, and fanning five of the 10 batters he faced.

-----

Kristian Campbell continues to find the famously hitter-friendly environs of Asheville's McCormick Field to his liking. Campbell was 2 for 4 with a double, bring him to 9 for 16 with five extra-base hits through four games of Greenville's series. A two-run homer by Tyler Miller in the seventh inning provided key insurance as the Drive staved off a late rally. Luis Perales was excellent in his start, giving up just three hits in four scoreless innings, striking out seven, and walking two. Bryce Bonnin went two scoreless innings to get credit for the win, and Zack Fogell pitched the final 1 1/3 to earn his first professional save.

-----

A breakout effort by Miguel Bleis highlighted a well-rounded Salem victory. Bleis doubled, walked, stole a base, and scored a pair of runs as part of a 3-for-3 evening. Nazzan Zanetello led off the bottom of the first with his second home run of the young season, adding a single, walk, steal, and another run scored. Natanael Yuten was 2 for 3 with a triple, walk, and two RBI. The trio of Salem hurlers had things well in hand with a combined four-hit shutout. All four hits were allowed by an otherwise efficient Jedixson Paez, who went five shutout innings, striking out seven without allowing a walk. Paez needed just 66 pitches to get through those five frames, throwing 47 for strikes. Danny Kirwin struck out three in his three perfect innings of relief, and CJ Weins also did not allow a baserunner as he closed things out in the ninth.

-----

Player of the Day: On a Friday with a bevy of qualified candidates, the nod goes to Miguel Bleis. The 20-year-old outfielder entered the day with a .187/.282/.280 despite some encouraging underlying numbers. Bleis, currently ranked fifth in the system, saw his OPS rise over 70 points with a double, walk, and pair of singles. He's also shown encouraging patience at the plate in the early going of 2024, as the 10 walks he has drawn in 20 games matches his total from both 2023 (31 games) and 2022 (40 games).

Cup of Coffee: Kristian Campbell goes 4 for 4; Portland rained out

5/3 Cup of Coffee:
It was a bit of a light slate on Thursday night, as Portland got rained out and will play a doubleheader Saturday, but among those that did play, there wasn't too much offense to be had, as Greenville was the only squad to exceed five runs. Nathan Hickey was a member of the multi-hit club for Worcester as Nick Pivetta struggled in his rehab appearance, while Kristian Campbell (pictured) was 4 for 4 in Salem, while teammate Eduardo Lopez added three knocks.

-----

Nick Pivetta struggled in his rehab start, surrendering four runs in three-plus innings of work as Lehigh Valley used a five-run fourth to run away with Thursday's game, which featured a 48-minute weather delay. Pivetta struck out five but allowed three hits and walked four. Brian Van Belle contributed four innings of no-hit relief, allowing just one walk with three strikeouts. The only hitter with multiple base knocks was Nathan Hickey, who continues to get work at first base, while Mark Kolozsvary had the only RBI.
