Minor Notes: Minor league season ends for Red Sox; Anthony finishes strong

The minor league baseball season for the Sox has come to an end, as Worcester's season ended this past week.

Worcester season comes to a close

The WooSox had a nice run in the second half of the season with a record of 44-31, but they finished 4 1/2 games behind Columbus for the International League lead. Bobby Dalbec led the team with 20 home runs, while Eddy Alvarez led the team in RBI with 77. Out of players with at least 100 at-bats, Mickey Gasper led the way with a 1.063 OPS. Roman Anthony was second among those players with a .982 OPS. 

Jason Alexander led the team in both innings and strikeouts, as he went 7-6 with a 4.42 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 138 1/3 innings. Luis Guerrero was a bright spot on the mound, going 5-3 with a 3.31 ERA, 79 strikeouts, and a .198 opponent's batting average in 54 1/3 frames. Yohan Ramirez and Bailey Horn were also key pieces of the bullpen, with ERAs of 2.18 and 2.15 respectively. 

Baseball America names Campbell Red Sox Minor League Player of the Year 

After an incredible season, Baseball America has named Kristian Campbell (pictured) their Red Sox Minor League Player of the Year. Campbell skyrocketed through the system this year, playing at a high level with three different teams. He started at Greenville, where he hit .306/.418/.558 in 40 games, then moved to Portland and hit .362/.463/.582 in 56 games, then finished off in Worcester hitting .286/.412/.486 in 19 games. For the season, he had a .997 OPS with 32 doubles, three triples, 20 home runs, and 24 stolen bases.

Players of the Week for September 16-22

 

Roman Anthony, OF, Worcester Red Sox 

6 G, 18 AB, 8 H, 3 2B, 5 R, 5 RBI, 2 SB, 9 BB, 5 K, .444/.630/.611

 

Anthony closed out his season by reaching base a ridiculous 17 times in his final 27 plate appearances. He reached base at least one time in every single game Worcester played in the Lehigh Valley. Despite not hitting a home run in the month of September, Anthony was still incredibly productive. In 18 games this month, he hit .375/.517/.500 with 21 walks and eight doubles. The top prospect in the sport will ride into the offseason on a very high note. 

Hunter Dobbins, RHP, Worcester Red Sox

1 G, 0-0, 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K

 

Dobbins ended his successful campaign with terrific performances in each of his final two starts. In those games, he tossed 11 innings and gave up just one n on eighth hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks. After posting a 3.17 ERA in 21 starts with Portland, Dobbins lowered that ERA to 2.61 in four starts with the WooSox. Combining the two stints, he punched out 120 hitters in 125 2/3 frames this year.
