Cup of Coffee: Brito, FCL Red squad keep rolling toward playoffs

8/20 Cup of Coffee: In the final Monday of the season with scheduled baseball, the DSL Red Sox Red continued to push toward the top seed. Edwin Brito continued his hitting streak to lead the 41-14 Red squad to another win.

Team Red continued to tune up for their playoff run, getting 13 position players and five pitchers into the action as they push for the top overall seed. Now riding a nine-game hitting streak, Edwin Brito was 2 for 3 with a triple, two RBI, and run scored before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh. Jhoan Peguero also tripled as part of his two-hit afternoon. Yodrian Beltre turned in a strong start, allowing one run on four hits in four innings, striking out four against one walk. Two hitless innings with a pair of strikeouts by Greider Colina got him credit for the win.

The Red squad has clinched at least the second seed in the DSL playoffs, but they'll need a bit of help on Tuesday to get the top spot. Trailing the DSL Giants Black by .005 percentage points, they'll need both a win and a Giants loss to secure the best regular season record.

While their Red counterparts are prepping for the postseason, Team Blue continues to get some solid individual performances as they play out the string. Ilan Fernandez scored two of the three Blue runs, going 2 for 4 with a triple. Yoelvin Chirino got the start, allowing one run on just one hit in three innings, striking out two and walking two.

Player of the Day: Edwin Brito started the season with one hit in his first 17 professional at-bats, and he was just 6 for 48 (.125) through his first 15 games. In 36 contests since, he has hit .303/.393/.555 with 28 runs driven in and 14 extra-base hits. Brito, 17, was out of the Dominican Republic to a $450,000 bonus back in January as an International free agent.
