Red Sox select Devin Futrell with 10th-round pick

With the 297th overall pick in the 2024 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Devin Futrell, a left-handed pitcher out of Vanderbilt University. Futrell is the 210th-ranked draft prospect in Baseball America's Top 500 but is not included in MLB Pipeline's Top 250.

Futrell, 21, hails from Pembroke Pines, Fla., and attended the same high school as Triston Casas (American Heritage) before arriving at Vanderbilt in 2021. As a junior this past spring, the lefty posted a 5.40 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 44 strikeouts to 10 walks in 12 appearances (10 starts) spanning 48 1/3 innings for the Commodores.

Standing at 6-foot-5 and 218 pounds, Futrell is known for his ability to throw strikes. As noted by Baseball America, the southpaw operates with an 89-91 mph fastball that touches 94 mph, an upper-70s changeup that is considered to be his best secondary, and a low-spin slurvy breaking ball that also gets into the upper-70s. His arsenal is considered light since it lacks power, so it will be worthwhile to see if he can add velocity to complement an already encouraging command profile.

Futrell, who turns 22 in September, joins second-rounder Payton Tolle and fifth-rounder Brandon Clarke as the third left-hander to be taken by the Red Sox in this year's draft. The full slot value for the 297th overall pick is $182,800.
