Cup of Coffee: Meidroth continues to get on base; Garcia, Lugo, Westbrook all homer

6/24 Cup of Coffee: Sunday's slate featured four games that were decided by two or fewer runs. Chase Meidroth had three hits while Matthew Lugo and Jamie Westbrook (pictured) both homered in Worcester's loss to Columbus. Tyler McDonough drove in his side's only run in Portland's loss to Richmond. Jhostynxon Garcia went deep for the seventh time in 19 games as Greenville fell to Rome. Nazzan Zanetello ripped an RBI double in Salem's loss to Augusta.

Columbus Clippers (CLE) 9, Worcester Red Sox 7

Grant Gambrell was scratched for precautionary reasons, so Justin Hagenman started in his place. The righty allowed one earned run on two hits (including a solo homer), one walk, and three strikeouts over four innings. Naoyuki Uwasasa, Jorge Benitez, and Sal Romano combined to surrender eight runs out of the bullpen. Romano was charged with the blown save and loss as a result of yielding four runs in the top of the ninth.

Three members of Worcester's starting lineup enjoyed multi-hit afternoons. Chase Meidroth went 3 for 5 with one RBI and two runs scored out of the leadoff spot. Jamie Westbrook also went 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs. Matthew Lugo crushed a solo shot for his third homer with the WooSox and plated an additional run as part of a 2 for 5 performance. Nathan Hickey doubled and scored two runs while Niko Kavadas recorded an RBI single. Nick Sogard drew three walks and stole one base to bring his season total to seven.

Richmond Flying Squirrels (SF) 2, Portland Sea Dogs 1

Hunter Dobbins took the loss in his start for Portland, allowing two earned runs on two hits, one walk, and three strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings. Alex Hoppe, Helcris Olivarez, and Felix Cepeda combined for 5 2/3 scoreless frames of relief. At the plate, the Sea Dogs' lone run came by way of a fifth-inning RBI single from Tyler McDonough. Tyler Miller, who scored that run, accounted for his side's only extra-base hit by doubling to lead off the latter half of the fifth.

Rome Emperors (ATL) 6, Greenville Drive 5

Blake Wehunt got the start for Greenville and allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits, two walks, one hit batsman, and two strikeouts over five innings. Jeremy Wu-Yelland took the loss in relief after getting tagged for three runs in the seventh. Cooper Adams retired four of the six batters he faced. Offensively, Ahbram Liendo led the way by going 3 for 4 with one run scored. Jhostynxon Garcia clubbed a solo shot for his seventh home run in 19 games with Greenville. Mikey Romero, Ronald Rosario, and Bryan Gonzalez all drove in runs as well. Cutter Coffey went 0 for 2 before being lifted for Luis Ravelo in the middle of the third inning, meaning his 11-game hitting streak is over.

Augusta GreenJackets (ATL) 2, Salem Red Sox 1

Matt Duffy tossed four scoreless innings in his start for Salem, scattering three hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Danny Kirwin took over and struck out four more across three innings of one-run ball. CJ Weins allowed the go-ahead run to score in the eighth and was charged with the loss as a result. Nazzan Zanetello provided the only scoring for the Red Sox by going 1 for 4 with a fifth-inning RBI double. Natanael Yuten also doubled for his only hit of the day while Freili Encarnacion and Juan Montero each went 2 for 4.

Player of the Day: Jamie Westbrook gets the nod here for ending his first week back in Worcester on a strong note. After being optioned and rejoining the WooSox last Monday, the recently-turned 29-year-old went 5 for 13 (.385) with one double, two home runs, nine RBIs, three runs scored, four walks, and two strikeouts in four games against Columbus at Polar Park.
