Cup of Coffee: Van Belle strikes out nine; Dalbec drives in two
9/16 Cup of Coffee: With Greenville off until Sunday, Worcester and Portland were the only two affiliates in action on Friday. Brian Van Belle had one of his best starts of the year, with Nick Sogard and Bobby Dalbec providing clutch hits. It was a low-scoring game in Portland, though Tyler McDonough was on base three times.

Brian Van Belle struck out nine over six innings of two-run ball in a win for Worcester. Justin Garza and Logan Gillaspie tossed scoreless innings as they picked up a hold and a save, respectively. Worcester scored all five runs in the third inning, with Nick Sogard lacing a two-run single and Bobby Dalbec adding a two-run double. Corey Rosier went 1 for 3 with a double, David Hamilton stole his 56th base, and Enmanuel Valdez drew three walks.

It was a rare down night for Roman Anthony and Kyle Teel as they combined to go 0 for 7. Tyler McDonough reached base three times via two singles and a walk, and Nathan Hickey went 1 for 4 with a double, and he scored on a single from Blaze Jordan. Chase Meidroth went 1 for 3 with a walk but also committed an error that led to the go-ahead run scoring in the eighth. Sterling Sharp, Ryan Miller, and Cody Scroggins had similar pitching lines, going three innings while striking out two. Sharp allowed the only earned run of the trio.

Player of the Day: Brian Van Belle tied a season high with nine strikeouts, improving to 5-3 with the WooSox. Van Belle struggled in August, posting a 7.89 ERA over five starts, but he has rebounded in September. Over three starts, he is 2-1 with a 3.58 ERA and 17 strikeouts over 15 1/3 innings.
