Red Sox select Caden Rose with seventh-round pick
With the 208th overall pick in the 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Caden Rose, an outfielder out of the University of Alabama. Rose is not ranked by either Baseball America or MLB Pipeline as one of the top prospects in this year's draft class.
Rose, 21, batted .261/.383/.503 with 10 doubles, nine home runs, 26 RBIs, 45 runs scored, nine stolen bases, 26 walks, and 40 strikeouts in 48 games (186 plate appearances) for the Crimson Tide this past season. The right-handed hitting junior dealt with injuries for much of the spring but was still named to the 2023 NCAA All-Tournament Team for his efforts in the Tuscaloosa Regional.
A native of Alabama himself, Rose was a highly touted prospect coming out of high school. The 5-foot-10, 185-pounder played for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks in 2021 and for the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod Baseball League last summer. While he has past experience at second base, Rose should be able to stick in center field moving forward.
Rose, who turns 22 in November, is the first player from an SEC school selected by Boston in this year's draft. The slot value for the 208th overall pick is $250,300.
