Red Sox select Antonio Anderson with third-round pick
With the 83rd overall pick in the 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Antonio Anderson (pictured, right), a shortstop out of North Atlanta HS (GA). Anderson is ranked 77th in the draft class by MLB Pipeline, 68th by Baseball America, and 75th by Perfect Game USA.
With this pick, the Red Sox selected another infield prospect with the chance to hit for both average and power. Baseball America labeled the switch hitter's future hit tool as a 55 and power as a 50 with the ability to hit 20+ home runs a season while noting that scouts prefer his left-handed swing where he opens it up and can generate more power.
While the six-foot-three Georgian is listed as a shortstop but his future defensive position is a bit up in the air. He has a plus arm and has been clocked as high as 91 from the mound so third base may end up a logical landing spot. However, there is some hope that he could land at second base where his offense would play up, but ultimately his below-average speed and lack of top-tier quickness may prevent that outcome.
Anderson is committed to Georgia Tech, and the slot for the 83rd pick is $846,800 which hopefully is enough to sign him away from that commitment.
