Draft Day 3 Recap: Rounds 11-20
The 2023 MLB draft has come to an end with the final 10 rounds. The Red Sox were able to sign eight of their final 10 selections of last year's draft.
Here are brief recaps of selections 11 through 20:
11. Nelly Taylor, OF, Polk State College (FL)
Taylor (pictured) is a left-hand hitting, left-hand throwing outfielder out of a junior college in Florida. He is listed at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds. This past season, he hit .353/.467/.620 with six home runs, six triples, and 19 doubles to go along with 31 stolen bases. He walked 36 times and struck out 42 times. According to our own Ian Cundall, he has plus-plus speed and is a good defender. Perfect Game has Taylor ranked #367, while he is not ranked by Baseball America. He becomes the second outfielder taken by Boston in this draft and he is committed to Florida State.
12. Max Carlson, RHP, North Carolina Carlson is a 6-foot-1 right-handed arm coming off his junior campaign at UNC. He tossed 76 innings this past season and posted a 5.45 ERA with 76 strikeouts and 32 walks. He started 14 games and appeared three other times in relief. He struck out 88 in 77 2/3 innings as a junior in 18 games, all starts. He is ranked #385 by Baseball America and according to them, he has strong pitchability. He was mainly a two-pitch pitcher with a fastball and a very good changeup. He mixed in a slider, but did not use the offering much. The fastball sits in the low-90s and his changeup is in the low-80s and generates a lot of swings and misses (40% miss rate). He was a big prospect in high school, as Perfect Game ranked him as the top player in the state of Minnesota, as well as the 12th best RHP in the country.
13. Cade Feeney, RHP, North Dakota State
The second consecutive right-handed pitcher and sixth overall for the Sox, Feeney is a 6-foot, 195-pound junior who is coming off a season that earned him a second career All-Summit League First Team selection. He started 14 games and threw 80 2/3 innings with a 4.57 ERA and an impressive 78-to-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He completed at least six innings in nine of his final 11 starts in 2023. As a freshman in 2021, he went 8-1 with a 3.23 ERA. Feeney is not ranked by Baseball America, but Cundall says it's a three-pitch mix, including a fastball, slider, and changeup, with solid command of all of his offerings.

Cundall says he uses a low-90s fastball, a slider, and a changeup with advanced feel for his secondaries. Here is some video from Perfect Game. The lefty is not ranked by Baseball America, and he spent time at San Diego State prior to Cal State Fullerton.

15. Phoenix Call, SS, Calabasas HS (CA)
Call is an extremely athletic 6-foot, 170-pound shortstop who can also play center field. He is ranked #253 by Baseball America, who says that scouts are torn on whether he will play short or center in the future. They also have him with 70-grade run times from home to first base to go along with plus arm strength and some sneaky power from the right side. His pure hitting ability will determine what kind of player he ends up being. He is committed to UCLA and is also ranked #226 at MLB.com and #275 at ESPN. He was named his high school league's MVP last year as a junior.
