Cup of Coffee: McDonough hits for cycle, Lugo belts two homers for Greenville (again!)
8/21 Cup of Coffee: Tyler McDonough (pictured) and Matthew Lugo combined for a ridiculous 21 total bases in Greenville's offensive beatdown. Ceddanne Rafaela also had a big game in Reading with another couple of extra-base hits. Mikey Romero also continued his hitting streak for the FCL Sox.

The Sox dropped a tough one that was called early due to rain. Victor Santos struggled, allowing eight hits and four earned runs in the first 3 1/3 innings. Geoff Hartlieb came on and tossed 2 2/3 innings, allowing an unearned run. Eduard Bazardo pitched a clean seventh with no hits allowed and one strikeout. Triston Casas stayed hot, picking up two of the Sox' three hits. Connor Wong had the other hit, his 18th double of the season. Franchy Cordero hit a sacrifice fly before being pulled early from the game due to a callup to Boston.

Reading Fightin Phils (PHI) 4, Portland Sea Dogs 3
Ceddanne Rafaela was the star offensively for Portland, going 2 for 4 with his 14th double and his 10th home run of the year as a Sea Dog. Izzy Wilson also went deep, his eighth of the campaign. David Hamilton had a nice night as well, going 2 for 5 with a double and his 54th stolen base of the season. Shane Drohan started and surrendered four runs over five innings but had four strikeouts and no walks. Dylan Spacke, Oddanier Mosqueda, and Brendan Nail each tossed a scoreless inning with a couple strikeouts.

Tyler McDonough and Matthew Lugo had about as great of a day as any two teammates could have in one night. McDonough went 4 for 5 and hit for the cycle, driving in two runs and scoring three times. It was his 20th double, fourth triple, and ninth home run. Lugo also went 4 for 5 right behind McDonough in the batting order with two home runs and a double, giving him 17 and 23 for the year, respectively. It was Lugo's second consecutive two-homer game. He also knocked in five runs and scored four times. Blaze Jordan, Philip Sikes, Jose Garcia, and Gilberto Jimenez each also had two-hit games, with Jordan, Garcia, and Jimenez picking up two-baggers. On the mound, Jordan DiValerio picked up the win in relief with three shutout innings and five strikeouts. Luis Guerrero tossed two scoreless innings as well with a pair of strikeouts.

The Sox were held to just five singles on the night, three of which came in a three-run third. Brainer Bonaci singled and scored by stealing home in that third inning. Tyler Miller went 1 for 4 with an RBI and Eduardo Lopez picked up his eighth stolen base of the year and scored a run. Luis Perales started and went two innings, allowing a run with four strikeouts and two walks. Luis Talavera followed him with four innings of his own, allowing two runs (one earned). Osvaldo De La Rosa also had two shutout innings with two strikeouts.

A day after belting his first professional home run, Mikey Romero came back yesterday with two more hits as well as a walk. He now has a five-game hitting streak. Roman Anthony, Brooks Bannon, and Cutter Coffey each grabbed two hits as well, with Bannon roping his first career double. Francis Hernandez won his ninth game of the season, surrendering two earned runs over five innings. He had a very impressive eight strikeouts to just one walk. The eight strikeouts were a season high for Hernandez. Jaret Godman threw a scoreless frame before Railin Perez earned a three-inning save, not allowing a hit or a run with three strikeouts. The win clinched a postseason spot.

Smil Guzman started for the Sox and was tremendous, tossing five shutout innings with three hits allowed to go along with a pair of strikeouts. The five innings marked a season high for the 18-year old. Starlin Santos picked up a two-inning save, as he allowed an unearned run with one strikeout to close the game out early in seven innings. Jose Liriano had a big day at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a couple doubles and two runs driven in. Natanael Yuten also raised his batting average to .309 with a 2-for-4 effort. Johanfran Garcia also roped an RBI double.

Armando Sierra also continued his fine season by reaching three times via a single and two walks while driving in three runs. He's hitting .318 with an .878 OPS. Albertson Asigen added two hits and Fraymi De Leon singled, walked, and scored three runs. Luis Cohen started and struggled a bit, allowing three earned runs in three innings with three walks and two strikeouts. Henry Morales tossed two scoreless frames, while Elvis Soto did not allow a run in his 1 1/3 innings of work.

Player of the Day: It's hard to imagine a player hitting for the cycle and not getting the Player of the Day, but Matthew Lugo gets the slight edge with one more total base and more RBI and runs. Lugo is putting together a very good season and has hit safely in eight of his last nine contests and has back-to-back three-hit games. He's hitting .317/.377/.667 in 15 games in August. The honorable mention certainly goes to Tyler McDonough, whose 10 total bases surpassed his career high of eight, which he set last September when he fell a double shy of the cycle. This time he completed it.
