Red Sox select Jonathan Brand with eighth-round pick
With its eighth-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, Boston has selected Jonathan Brand, a right-handed pitcher out of Miami University (Ohio). Brand is not ranked by MLB.com or Baseball America but is ranked 388th by Perfect Game USA.
Despite only being listed as 5-foot-9, 200 pounds, Brand has operated exclusively as a starter during his last two years time at Miami. Over his 3 seasons, he has thrown a combined 155 and 1/3 innings with a 2.84 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 181 strikeouts with 73 walks. He struggled in 2021 posting a 4.90 ERA but rebounded in 2022 with a 1.40 ERA (good for third in the nation), and 1.13 WHIP over 77 and 1/3 innings, and continued that success into his season in the Cape Cod Baseball League this summer. Playing for Wareham for the second straight season, he has made five starts with a 2.57 ERA and 0.91 WHIP with 21 strikeouts in 21 innings. Coming off that strong year he was named a Third-Team All-American and First-Team All-Mac.
Brand has three seasons as a Red Hawk and previously played a season for East Georgia State College. Brand is committed to transfer to the University of Auburn.
