Red Sox select Isaac Coffey with 10th-round pick
With their 10th-round pick in the 2022 draft, Boston has selected Isaac Coffey, a right-handed pitcher out of Oral Roberts University.
Coffey was named the 2021 Summit League Pitcher of the Year as a sophomore after striking out 92 batters over 86 1/3 innings with an ERA of 2.81. He entered 2022 with high expectations, earning a Second Team Preseason All-American nod from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. His performance took a step back, as he went 7-6 with an ERA of 3.77. His walks increased while his strikeouts decreased.
The 6-foot-1 starter does not appear to be related to Boston's third-round pick this year, Cutter Coffey. His fastball sits 88-91, and he walked only 1.77 batters per nine innings over his college career. While he was drafted as a pitcher, Coffey was a two-way player in college. After notching 161 at-bats in 2019 as a freshman, he had just 31 at-bats in 2022. He did hit .387/.406/.516 in 2022 in the small sample, with a career line of .276/.363/.430.
