Red Sox select Cutter Coffey with second-round pick

With the 41st overall pick in the 2022 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Cutter Coffey, a shortstop out of Liberty High School in Brentwood, California. Romero is ranked 65th in the draft class by Baseball America, and 105th by MLB.com. The pick was compensation for the Red Sox due to their inability to come to terms with 2021 second-round pick Jud Fabian out of Florida.

The six-foot-two, 185-pound Coffey is a standout athlete who was also considered a strong draft prospect on the mound. A strong 2022 season raised his draft stock at the plate as he displayed excellent athleticism and good raw power, hitting .442 with 12 home runs. He will look to develop more consistency with his hit tool. Per Baseball America, he "flashes the bat speed, strength and ability to make adjustments to project to be an above-average hitter" but struggles when his swing gets on the long side.

As would be expected from a player whose fastball registered in the mid-90s, Coffey's arm is considered his best raw tool and will play easily either if he sticks at shortstop or ends up moving to third base. Opinions seem mixed on the likelihood of those outcomes. Baseball America says he has a chance to stay at short, while the report at MLB.com says that few believe he will remain there.

Coffey has a commitment to the University of Texas. The slot value for the 41st pick is $1,905,500.
