Red Sox select Brooks Brannon with ninth-round pick
With the 279th overall pick in the 2022 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Brooks Brannon, a catcher out of Randleman High School in North Carolina. He is a North Carolina commit.
Brannon is ranked No. 88 by ESPN, No. 155 by Baseball America, and No. 158 by MLB Pipeline.
According to Baseball America, Brannon has two above-average tools: his arm and raw power. Baseball America also thinks he has potential plus raw power, showing that with 20 home runs and 91 RBI in 34 games this spring. MLBPipeline is higher on his arm, calling it a plus tool.
MLBPipeline is unsure whether he will stick behind the plate, with a large, 6-foot, 210-pound frame that is already maxed out but is of the opinion that he may go to third base, where his arm could play, or left field. Currently, his blocking and framing need refinement.
Brannon is also a proven winner, as he is a two-time 2A state champion in North Carolina.
