Cup of Coffee: Potts, Koss with big offensive nights for Portland

Ronaldo Hernandez put the Sox ahead in the fourth inning with a two-run single, but the bullpen surrendered that lead in the eighth. Triston Casas went 2 for 5, while newly reacquired Jose Peraza singled, doubled, and scored a run. The team was just 1 for 18 with runners in scoring position. On the mound, Connor Seabold started and went the first four, giving up two earned runs with four strikeouts and no walks. Jake Thompson tossed a pair of scoreless innings before the wheels fell off in the eighth for Eduard Bazardo, who gave up three runs.

Hartford Yard Goats (COL) 7, Portland Sea Dogs 5 (10 innings)
The Sea Dogs dropped a tough one after taking a two-run lead in the top of the 10th on a two-run blast by Hudson Potts. It was the 11th long ball for Potts, who also singled, doubled, and drove in three. Christian Koss had a huge game as well, going 3 for 5 with his 12th home run, two RBI, and three runs scored. Izzy Wilson added a double and Ceddanne Rafaela singled, walked, and scored a run. Brian Van Belle was fantastic for 5 1/3 innings, striking out nine without issuing a free pass. He did, however, surrender three runs, including a couple home runs. Zach Bryant stuck out three in his 1 2/3 scoreless innings, while Brendan Nail struck out the side in a clean inning. Ryan Fernandez struggled in the 10th, allowing four runs (three earned).

Greenville was held to just six hits, two of them from Nick Yorke, who doubled and singled. Tyler McDonough also hit a double, his 19th of the year. Wyatt Olds started and allowed three runs in three innings, but he struck out an impressive seven with just one walk. Brendan Cellucci and Cody Scroggins each tossed a scoreless frame.

Hunter Dobbins threw three solid innings before allowing a four-spot in the fourth inning. He struck out four and walked three. Graham Hoffman threw a shutout inning before Luis De La Rosa threw the final three innings, allowing one run on just two hits with three strikeouts. Blaze Jordan went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Kier Meredith singled, stole a his 14th base, and scored a run.

The Sox walked this one off in the 11th inning on a fielding error that came off the bat of Luis Ravelo, who came on as a defensive replacement at shortstop in the 10th. The other two Sox runs came on solo shots by Jhostynxon Garcia and Allan Castro. Alex Zapete added a double. Jedixson Paez, who jumped from 60th to 40th in the latest SoxProspects.com rankings update, was terrific on the mound, going 4 1/3 innings with just one hit allowed. He struck out five and walked a pair. Henry Nunez threw 3 2/3 innings of hitless baseball to lower his ERA to 0.90, while Railin Perez tossed the final three innings with three strikeouts and no runs allowed, lowering his ERA to 0.63.

Albertson Asigen delivered an RBI single and a sacrifice fly, while Andy Lugo also drove in a run via the sacrifice fly. Marvin Alcantara also drew three walks and scored twice. Jean Carlos Reyes started and allowed three runs over three innings, but he did strikeout three and walk none. Daniel Nunez tossed a couple scoreless frames, then Ruben De La Cruz tossed a perfect sixth inning before rain ended it early.

DSL Red Sox Red 4, DSL Guardians Blue 3 (July 25th continued)
This game from Monday was picked up in the fifth inning with the Sox up 1-0, and they would hold on and win by one. Natanael Yuten and Yosander Asencio carried the offense, each picking up three hits and knocking in a run. Asencio had an RBI single back on Monday, and he would go on to collect another single as well as a double yesterday. Smil Guzman had a no-hitter working through four before the rain halted the game on Monday. Jogly Garcia grabbed the win with three innings of one-run ball with three strikeouts. Simon Pacheco saved it, tossing a scoreless 1 1/3 innings.

DSL Guardians Blue 0 @ DSL Red Sox Red 0 (suspended) The two clubs' regularly scheduled game was also suspended, this time in the third inning, and will be made up later. Darlyn De La Cruz was on the bump for the Sox, allowing no hits in 2 1/3 frames. The offense also had no hits so far.

Player of the Day: Hudson Potts gets the nod with his three-hit night that included a go-ahead home run in extra innings. Potts has displayed some nice power this year for Portland, belting 11 home runs and 15 doubles with a .467 slugging percentage in 55 games. Despite missing some time in the middle of the month, he has posted great numbers in July, with a .286/.318/.571 slash line with three home runs in 42 at-bats.
