SoxProspects.com top stories of 2021
The 2021 season was not quite a return to normalcy, especially at the minor league level. However, a full slate of games something more closely resembling a traditional operation here at SoxProspects.com, a resurgent major league squad, and the organization's highest draft pick in over 50 years led to a surge in interest in the system. With that background, we present our most-read articles and most-downloaded podcasts of 2021.

The Cup of Coffee has been our morning recap of the previous day's games for more than 15 years, and this ended up one of the most-read editions of all-time. Franchy Cordero, one of the first pieces announced in the three-team trade that sent outfielder Andrew Benintendi to the Royals, struggled mightily in his first run with the major league club. On the day Boston completed the deal by receiving three players from two teams, Cordero welcomed his trade-mates by going 3 for 4 with two homers as Worcester beat Rochester in a 12-1 blowout.

"It seems likely that California high school shortstop Marcelo Mayer will be off the board by the time Boston’s pick rolls around at #4." The annual draft preview had even more interest as Boston possessed the fourth overall pick, highest since 1967. While the draft preview has hit on several correct selections over the years, we were happy to be wrong about this one.

Duran struggled badly in his major league time, hitting just .215/.241/.336 in 33 games and missing most of September after a positive COVID test. His struggles have led some naysayers to say the Red Sox missed their chance to sell high on the 2018 draft pick, ignoring both the small sample in a tough situation as well as the fact that nobody was looking sell after he rocketed through the minors and impressed at Olympic qualifying.

The only thing more exciting than an actual trade? The possibility of a trade. Despite some clear holes on the roster, the team was clinging to a narrow lead in the American League East leading up to what proved to be an extremely busy deadline around the league. Ian took a tour through the minors, checking on some players other teams may have been looking to add, and highlighting the much-improved depth that has the system on the upswing.
