Cup of Coffee: Winckowski takes no-hitter into 6th

9/25 Cup of Coffee: Worcester continues to play out the Triple-A "Final Stretch," as Josh Winckowski (pictured) was saddled with the tough-luck loss despite not allowing a hit until the sixth inning. The DSL squads swept the two Royals affiliates with the Team Blue win boosting them into the division lead.

Rochester Red Wings (WAS) 3, Worcester Red Sox 0

Thursday night at Polar Park featured a pitchers' duel between two hurlers making their Triple-A debut. Josh Winckowski was outstanding in his maiden WooSox voyage, going 5 1/3 no-hit innings before the Red Wings reached him for a pair of runs in the sixth. Overall, the right-hander allowed two runs on three hits in six frames, striking out six without walking a batter. 

Unfortunately, the offense provided little support against Joan Adon, making his first start for Rochester after a promotion from Harrisburg, and a quartet of relievers. The lineup produced just three hits, with a Ronaldo Hernandez double the only one to go for extra bases. Yairo Munoz, on the COVID-19 list since the beginning of the month, began his rehab assignment. Munoz led off and was the designated hitter, picking up a single. Triston Casas had his patient approach on display, drawing three walks.

DSL Red Sox Blue 4, DSL Royals White 2

A fourth consecutive win coupled with a Rangers1 loss vaulted Team Blue into first place in the DSL North Division. All four runs came during a sixth-inning rally that featured just two hits. Three consecutive walks, a sacrifice fly, and an error helped out, with Armando Sierra capping the rally with an RBI single. Diego Viloria had half of the Sox hits, going 2 for 3 on the day. Starter Barbaro Pinero allowed one unearned run on two hits in two innings. Carlos Reyes got credit for the win, giving up three hits across two scoreless frames, striking out three.

DSL Red Sox Red 10, DSL Royals Blue 3

The Red squad used a seven-run, seven-hit third inning rally to get back into the win column. Ahbram Liendo sparked the offense out of the leadoff spot, going 3 for 4 with a double, triple, two RBI and two runs scored. Miguel Rojas added a pair of hits, while Endrso Lira was 1 for 3 with a walk. Alvaro Mejias surrendered two runs on four hits in three innings in his starter role. Starlin Santos gave up one run in three innings, striking out five without issuing a walk.

Player of the Day: Josh Winckowski has had a solid first season in the Red Sox organization after a wild offseason. The 2016 15th-round pick by the Blue Jays was picked up by the Mets in the deal that sent Steven Matz to Toronto, then flipped to Boston as part of the three-team Andrew Benintendi move. He ranks second in the system in innings with 106 between Portland and Worcester, featuring a 4.08 ERA and 1.25 WHIP. Winckowski is currently ranked 16th in the system.
