Minor Notes: Sox trade Ramirez for Schwarber; Jordan promoted to Salem

Here are this week's minor league notes: 

• It was a busy week in baseball with the trade deadline coming and going, and on Episode 219 of the SoxProspects.com Podcast, Chris and Ian discussed potential moves for the Sox prior to the deadline. They also talked about the draft signing deadline and the situation with Jud Fabian, who they ended up not signing. They also mentioned Connor Seabold's Triple-A debut as well as some other promotions. 

• The headline deal that the Sox ended up making was with the Washington Nationals for Kyle Schwarber. They sent right-handed pitcher Aldo Ramirez (pictured), who was ranked eighth at SoxProspects.com, to Washington. Soxprospects.com's Director of Scouting Ian Cundall dove deep with an analysis of the trade.

• The Red Sox also traded Michael Chavis to Pittsburgh for left-hander Austin Davis. Chavis was the number one prospect in the system as recently as April of 2019, but after a great first month with the big league team, he struggled to get going again. 

• They also dealt right-hander Alex Scherff to the Twins for reliever Hansel Robles. Scherff was taken by the Sox in the fifth round of 2017 and had a 2.45 ERA so far in 2021 between Greenville and Portland. Scherff would have been a toss-up for the Sox this winter on whether or not to keep him protected from the Rule 5 draft. Both Robles and Davis are with the big league team. 

• The draft signing deadline has passed, and the Red Sox were able to sign 16 of their 20 picks. The biggest name that did not sign was their second-round selection, Jud Fabian out of Florida. Fifth-round pick Nathan Hickey signed for $1,000,000, which is $590,000 over the slot value. The three others that the Sox did not ink are the 13th round pick, shortstop Zach Ehrhard, the 15th rounder, shortstop Payton Green, and the 20th rounder, shortstop Josh Hood. 

• In a sneak peek of the position player of the week, the Red Sox promoted 18-year-old Blaze Jordan to Salem. The promotion was well-deserved for Jordan, who has been on a tear for the FCL Red Sox. In 19 games in Florida, he hit .362/.408/.667 with 12 extra-base hits. 

• The Sox also promoted their 2021 third-round pick, Tyler McDonough, to Salem. In a very brief stint with the FCL Sox, McDonough went 4 for 13 with three doubles. 

• Marcus Wilson, who was designated for assignment on July 30th, was claimed off waivers by the Seattle Mariners. The outfielder, who the Red Sox acquired for Blake Swihart back in 2019, was hitting .242/.370/.452 with 10 home runs and 30 RBI this year for Worcester. 

• Top prospect Triston Casas is having a great time in the Olympics for Team USA, hitting .308 with a team-leading two home runs. Red Sox prospect Johan Mieses also went deep today for the Dominican Republic. Denyi Reyes, also of the Dominican Republic, will start on the mound today against Casas and Team USA. 

• Katie Morrison of MassLive.com wrote in her WooSox notebook about Tate Matheny after an unbelievable home run robbery he made. He talked to Morrison about his season, especially his defense. 

Players of the Week: 

Blaze Jordan, 3B, FCL Red Sox

5 G, 14 AB, 9 H, 4 2B, 1 HR, 5 R, 4 RBI, 3 BB, 1 K, .643/.706/1.143

Jordan is currently 14th at SoxProspects.com and is having a monster year for the FCL Sox. The 2020 third-round pick has multiple hits in six of his past seven games, earning him a promotion to Salem. He started July off pretty slow, going 2 for 17 to begin the month, but after that, he figured things out and has been on fire. The home run he hit on July 26th at JetBlue Park was absolutely crushed to the deepest part of the ballpark. 

Shane Drohan, LHP, Salem Red Sox

2 G, 1-0, 10 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 9 K

Another 2020 draft pick is the player of the week on the mound. Fifth-round left-handed pitcher Shane Drohan out of Florida State had a dominant week after what has been a bit of an up-and-down season for him. He posted a 1.69 ERA in 16 innings in May, but then a 6.23 ERA in June. He was somewhere in the middle in July, with a 4.05 ERA. Overall, he has a 3.86 ERA in 58 1/3 innings pitched with 53 strikeouts and 33 walks.
