Cup of Coffee: Brasier debuts; Scott homers again

A three-run ninth inning capped off by a walk-off passed ball gave Worcester a surprise victory. Delino DeShields walked and moved to third base on a two-run single from Joey Meneses that tied the game. DeShields then came in to score on a passed ball to win it. Yairo Muñoz's hitting streak moved to 31 games as he went 3 for 5 with a double, and Ryan Fitzgerald went 1 for 4 with a two-run home run.
Connor Seabold was not quite able to follow up his 10-strikeout outing from last week. On Tuesday, he allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings, walking one and striking out six. Making his first appearance of the season, Ryan Brasier tossed a scoreless inning with one walk. Brasier had a left calf strain to begin the year and then had to be hospitalized after being hit in the head by a line drive in early June in a sim game.

The usual suspects tried to power the offense, but it was not enough to overcome Bowling Green. Stephen Scott and Tyler Dearden both hit two-run home runs and drew a walk. Scott is up to five home runs in just nine games with Greenville. Christian Koss and Jake MacKenzie each added two hits, with MacKenzie notching an RBI. After not allowing a run in 22 innings in July, Brian Van Belle has seen his fortunes change in August. He served up four home runs on Tuesday as he went 4 1/3 innings allowing seven runs. The loss went to Oddanier Mosqueda who allowed two runs in the bottom of the eighth that broke the 7-7 tie.

Nick Yorke saw his hitting streak extend to 19 games by going 3 for 5 with a double and two RBI, but the Red Sox fell just short. Salem scored three in the top of the ninth to tie the game, but the Nationals walked it off in the ninth off of Miguel Suero. On a humid day in Virginia, Jeremy Wu-Yelland was not sharp. He allowed four runs on four hits and three walks in only 1 1/3 innings. In addition to Yorke, Gilberto Jimenez and Matthew Lugo each drove in two runs. Lugo went 1 for 4 with a double and a walk but also added his 28th error.

The Red Sox had a walk-off win in the ninth inning after Marcelo Mayer reached on a fielder's choice and then the Rays committed a throwing error that allowed Phillip Sikes to score. Mayer went 1 for 5, and the hit was his first as a professional. Tyler Miller went 2 for 4 with a double and he is now 8 for 14 to start his career.
Wilkelman Gonzalez cruised through the first three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth and fifth. He ended the night with three runs allowed in 4 2/3, walking two and striking out six. Luis De La Rosa was electric out of the bullpen with three shutout innings with just one hit.
A lockdown outing from Felix Cepeda and the first home run of the year from Danny Diaz propelled the FCL squad in game two. Cepeda struck out nine over five innings of one-hit ball, and Diaz launched a two-run shot in the sixth inning. Blake Loubier got back on track a bit with 1 2/3 innings of relief. He entered the game with an ERA 18.90, and he did not allow a hit but did walk two and threw a wild pitch that scored a run. He struck out three which is a season-high.

The Pirates and Red Sox played into the bottom of the third before the game was stopped. The Red Sox had a 1-0 lead, and Yordanny Monegro had thrown three scoreless innings.

This game only made it to the top of the third before being paused for the day. Miguel Bleis had another hit, and he has hit safely in every game so far in August.

Player of the Day: There was not one main standout performance on Tuesday, so the award will go to Stephen Scott for his recent hot streak. Scott went 1 for 4 with a home run and a walk, and his OPS with Greenville barely moved, going from 1.256 to 1.271. In 70 games this year in Low-A and High-A he has hit .274/.385/.512. The 24-year-old has been on the 10 best hitters in the system this season.
