Cup of Coffee: Davis drives in five, Duran belts two homers

6/30 Cup of Coffee: Despite the loss, it was a notable day for the WooSox, as Jarren Duran belted two home runs, Jeter Downs went yard, and Tanner Houck was solid in his start. The Sea Dogs also put up a big offensive showing in a loss, as the pitching throughout the system wasn't great yesterday. Salem broke out for 20 runs, led by Joe Davis' (pictured) huge day at the plate.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (NYY) 9, Worcester Red Sox 7

Jarren Duran headlined this one, belting his 14th and 15th home runs of the season. He showed off his all-fields power yet again, as the first one went to right field and the second to left field. Jeter Downs also went deep, but ended up having to leave the game after a collision at home plate. Johan Mieses also went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles. 

Tanner Houck impressed during his four innings of work on the mound, allowing two runs with four strikeouts and no walks. SoxProspects.com's Director of Scouting Ian Cundall had some more details on Houck's outing, which started out perfectly but fell apart in the fourth inning. Phillips Valdez had a clean inning with a pair of strikeouts out of the bullpen.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats (TOR) 10, Portland Sea Dogs 9

Josh Winckowski had a rocky start, allowing four runs on eight hits in five innings. He punched out four and walked one. Even though Durbin Feltman was charged with one of two Portland blown saves, he still pitched well with three strikeouts and one walk in 1 2/3 frames. Pedro Castellanos had a big game at the plate, going 4 for 5 with a walk and two runs scored. Triston Casas went  2 for 6, Jeisson Rosario reached three times out of the leadoff spot with a pair of singles and a walk, and Hudson Potts went 2 for 4 with his third long ball of the year. Portland also roped two triples, off the bats of Ryan Fitzgerald and Grant Williams.

Winston-Salem Dash (CWS) 14, Greenville Drive 5

Brian Van Belle had a rough outing in this one, allowing seven runs (four earned) on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings. On the positive side, he struck out seven and issued just one free pass. Brendan Nail had a great outing in relief, tossing two shutout innings with no hits allowed and three strikeouts. Christian Koss had a big day at the dish, going 2 for 4 with a double, a triple, and three runs batted in. Tyreque Reed also blasted his 10th home run of the season.

Salem Red Sox 20, Fredericksburg Nationals (WAS) 3

Joe Davis led the charge in this offensive outburst, going 3 for 6 with a double, a home run, five RBI, and three runs scored. The first baseman now has a .941 OPS on the year. Nick Northcut homered and walked three times, while Dean Miller went 2 for 5 with his first long ball and three RBI. Stephen Scott reached five times with three hits and two walks, and came around to score all five times. Eduardo Lopez had three hits and three runs of his own. 

After Aaron Perry started and allowed two runs in two innings, the bullpen picked him up. Jorge Rodriguez picked up the win, allowing just one run in four innings of work. Devon Roedahl followed him up with two flawless innings, not allowing a walk or a hit, with four strikeouts. Ryan Fernandez closed it out with a clean ninth.

FCL Braves 0, FCL Red Sox 0 (Susp. 5th)

The second FCL Sox game was suspended in the top of the fifth inning and will be resumed on July 26th. Before the lightning caused the game to halt (and be replaced by, apparently, a rousing game of tic tac toe), Blaze Jordan and Bryan Gonzalez had the Sox's two hits, while the rehabbing Nick Decker had a pair of walks. In what's still just his unofficial Red Sox debut since arriving from the Royals, Luis De La Rosa threw 3 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks while recording one strikeout. Blake Loubier followed with a single inning before the weather intervened.

Player of the Day: Joe Davis continued his big season with two more extra-base hits and five driven in. The power-hitting first baseman is now slashing .324/.373/.568 with seven home runs and 35 RBI. Davis is not currently ranked in the top 60, but has a chance to move up if he can keep this production up whenever he moves up to Greenville.
