Scouting Report Updates: Focusing on some DSL bats
The latest SoxProspects scouting report update sheds light on a group of teenage international signees, including power-hitting Albert Feliz. Feliz, at 18, will require a great deal of development as a hitter, but possesses impressive raw pop that is among the best in the system.
Today's reports are all compiled from sources. They'll all be updated once we see the players in person.
SoxProspects.com scouting reports are written by our scouting report team, led by Director of Scouting Ian Cundall.
Albert Feliz, First baseman/Outfielder
Physical Description: Thick, physically mature frame. Very strong already. Minimal projection remaining.
Hit: Starts with a wide base. Utilizes a short leg lift. Long swing. Very rudimentary approach. Pitch recognition skills are very basic. Needs to improve contact skills.
Power: Plus-plus raw power. Generates massive raw power due to his strength. Has shown the ability already to drive the ball out of the ballpark. Power is almost exclusively to the pull side.
Run: Well below-average speed already and likely will get slower as he gets older.
Field: Raw. Limited mobility and instincts. First base or left field profile.
Arm: Average arm strength.
Career Notes: Tied for DSL Red Sox program lead with 9 home runs in 2019, the most hit by a Red Sox DSL player since at least 2006, the last year for which DSL statistics are available. Participated in the Fall Instructional League in 2019.
Summation: Very volatile prospect with a bat first-profile. Doesn’t project to add value defensively, so future projection is all tied up in his bat. Wide range of outcomes, high-risk prospect. Has among the best raw power of anyone in the system. Has to show he can make enough contact in order for his power to play in-game. Unclear how he will handle more advanced pitching. Step up to the Gulf Coast League will be a good test for him.

Eduardo Vaughan, Outfielder
Scouting Report: Very projectable frame. Athletic for his size. Has already begun to fill out. Has some feel at the plate and potential with his hit tool. Has shown power potential. Likely projects as a right fielder long term due to his size, but is currently working out in center field. Potential plus arm and average speed. Was the top prospect in Panama as a 15-year-old. Participated in the Fall Instructional League in 2019.
-----
Allan Castro, Second baseman
Scouting Report: Solid frame with remaining projection. Has shown advanced feel for hit for his age. Will start at shortstop, but may have to move from the middle infield as he physically matures.
-----
Kelvin Diaz, Second baseman
Scouting Report: Best pure athlete in the Red Sox 2019-20 international class. Loose, projectable frame. Baseball skills are on the raw side. Has a long way to go developmentally.
-----
Jhostynxon Garcia, Outfielder
Scouting Report: Thin, projectable frame. Very athletic. Has offensive upside, moreso with his hit tool than power at this point. Played shortstop as an amateur, but will move to the outfield in pro ball.
-----
Alexis Hernandez, Outfielder
Scouting Report: Converted pitcher who is an above-average athlete and has a plus arm.
-----
Lyonell James, Third baseman
Scouting Report: Tall, skinny frame. Needs to add strength, but has plenty of remaining physical projection. Hands work at the plate, has bat speed. Has shown raw power that could translate in-game as he matures. Average speed. Has a chance to stick at third base long-term. Younger brother of Axel James, who signed during the 2018-19 international signing period.
-----
Axel James, Second baseman/Outfielder
Scouting Report: Small, thin frame. Needs to get stronger, could take some time for him to physically develop. One of the top performers for the 2019 DSL Red Sox. Older brother of Lyonell James, who the Red Sox signed in the 2019-20 international signing period.
-----
Jose Mendez, Second baseman
Scouting Report: Very projectable frame. Needs to develop physically. Glove is ahead of his bat at this point.
-----
Johnfrank Salazar, Third baseman
Scouting Report: Tall, projectable frame. Very thin at present, needs to add significant strength. Has shown some ability at the plate and a plus arm.
-----
Miguel Ugueto, Outfielder
Scouting Report: Has a prototypical left field profile with a strong frame and offensive upside.
