Red Sox select Stephen Scott with their 10th-round pick
With their 10th-round selection of the 2019 MLB First Year Player Draft, the Boston Red Sox selected Stephen Scott, an outfielder from Vanderbilt University, 317th overall.
Scott, a senior, was ranked 607th by Perfect Game, who referred to him as one of the most accomplished college seniors in the country. Scott put up an impressive 1.035 OPS this season at Vanderbilt, making the 2019 season his second consecutive with an OPS north of 1.000. He also went deep 11 times to complement his .335 average, and showed a keen eye and advanced approach at the plate, with 42 walks to 58 strikeouts.
During his college career, Scott made appearances all around the diamond, with appearances at first base, second base, the outfield, and even at catcher.
He profiles as a corner outfielder as a professional, as despite his positional versatility, he does not have a standout defensive home. He was drafted in 2018 in the 31st round by the Marlins, but chose to return to school for his senior season.
Slot value for the 317th overall pick is $142,200.
