Red Sox select Noah Song with their fourth-round pick
With
their fourth-round selection of the 2019 MLB First Year
Player Draft, the Boston Red Sox selected Noah Song, a right-handed pitcher from the United States Naval Academy, 137th overall.
He was ranked No. 49 by FanGraphs, No. 68 by MLB Pipeline, No. 65 by Baseball America, and No. 22 by Perfect Game.
The right-hander was viewed as a Day 1 pick on merit, but comes with a potential signability issue, as he is currently obligated to serve in the Navy. It was this that caused his fall to the Red Sox at number 137, despite being referred to as the best college senior in the country.
Song has a classic starting pitcher's frame, at 6'4", with a fastball that he can run up to 98 mph, and likes to pitch off of it, complementing it with a slider, a looping curveball, and an occasional changeup. The development of his breaking ball is what moved him up draft boards this spring, as it is reported to have jumped a full grade over the past calendar year, flashing plus at times. At times he has struggled with command of some of his secondaries, but as his curveball continues to refine, it is not expected to be an issue moving forward, as he has already knocked a full walk off his BB/9 year over year, from 4.15 BB/9 in 2018 to 3.10 in 2019.
Song has had an impressive 2019 season, as he has a 1.44 ERA with 161 strikeouts and just 31 walks in 94 innings pitched, making him a Golden Spikes Finalist.
