Red Sox select Cameron Cannon with the 43rd overall pick
With the 43rd overall pick in the 2019 First-Year Player draft, the Red Sox selected Cameron Cannon, an infielder from the University of Arizona. Cannon was ranked 94th by Baseball America, 79th by MLB Pipeline, 73rd by Perfect Game, and 87th by Keith Law of ESPN.
Cannon's calling card has been his hit tool, riding an advanced approach and line-drive swing from the right side of the plate to steady improvement to his three years in Arizona. He was a top bat in the Pac-12 this year with a .390/.479/.638 line, most notably leading all of Division I with 29 doubles. He also stroked seven homers and drove in 53 runs in 50 games, posting 34 walks against 28 strikeouts. Cannon was also a Cape Cod League All-Star during the summer of 2018 was a member of the Falmouth Commodores. Baseball America described his bat as being "pull-heavy" with MLB Pipeline crediting that his "best attribute is his ability to make repeated line-drive contact."
The 5-foot-10, 196 pound Cannon was announced as a shortstop, but also saw significant playing time at second base during his time with the Wildcats, and at third while in the Cape League. At what position he will land as a professional has been an open question, with varied opinions on how his arm will carry at third base. However, scouts agree that it his bat that will carry his glove, with Keith Law viewing him as having the "upside of an above-average regular"
Cannon was previously selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 21st round of the 2016 draft, but chose to head a couple hours south to Tucson. He joins Bobby Dalbec and Rio Gomez as University of Arizona products currently in the Boston system.
