Cup of Coffee: Devers rehabs, Dearden delivers at plate

8/7 Cup of Coffee: With most of the higher-level clubs off on Monday, it was a prospect of years past who had all the attention in Rafael Devers. The rehabbing third baseman went 1 for 4 but added a solo shot in the sixth inning in a Lowell thrashing of Vermont. Yet, it was Tyler Dearden (pictured) who was the story of the game for the Spinners, going 4 for 5 in the win. All three other teams in action on the farm combined for just three runs, with all three taking a loss.

Lowell Spinners 11, Vermont Lake Monsters (OAK) 3
Making his Lowell debut after going from Gulf Coast League in 2014 to Single-A Greenville in 2015, and then in 2016 to Salem, rehabbing third baseman Rafael Devers delivered a solo home run in the sixth innings and had two RBI in total to help the Spinners rout the Lake Monsters.

Devers is making a one-game rehab assignment after injuring his left hamstring and being placed on the 10-day DL on July 29. Lowell lumbered up for 15 hits, with Tyler Dearden (4 for 5) and Grant Williams (3 for 5) providing the most pop, combining for seven total RBI.

Chris Machamer got the starting nod, tossing four innings of five-hit ball, allowing one run and recording two strikeouts. Logan Browning got the win, hurling three innings of relief, giving up one hit and two runs (zero earned) in the minor league debut for the 2018 24th-round draft pick.

GCL Orioles 3, GCL Red Sox 2

The Red Sox had plenty of baserunners, but went just 3 for 14 with runners in scoring position, ultimately falling to the Orioles. Elih Marrero had the biggest night of the bunch for the Red Sox, going 3 for 4 with a double and two runs. Keibert Petit added a 2-for-4 performance with a triple and RBI.

Rayniel Adames took the loss, lasting four frames but giving up six hits and two runs, including a solo home run in the third inning.

DSL Marlins 9, DSL Red Sox1 0

Yoelvis Guedez picked up his third loss of the season, as the 17-year-old right-hander out of Venezuela gave up six hits in six innings, allowing four runs. It marked the same number of earned runs Guedez had allowed in his last seven outings (26 2/3 innings) with the Red Sox.

Without much offense to speak for,  Carlos Sanchez had the lone two-hit performance with a 2-for-4 showing as the designated hitter.

DSL Indians/Brewers 2, DSL Red Sox2 1 (10 inn.)

A fine start from Jose Ramirez was wasted as the Red Sox, and Isaias Ozoria, gave up a one-out sacrifice fly in the 10th inning. Ramirez, a right-handed 17-year-old out of the Dominican Republic, registered his second straight start of four innings without allowing a run. Ramirez struck out six over those four frames and allowed just two hits.

Gregori Custodio went 2 for 4 with a double and a walk while Kleiber Rodriguez had the lone RBI and three strikeouts in the loss.

Player of the Night: Sputtering in his last nine games prior to Monday night, going 5 for 32 in that span, former 2017 29th round draft pick Tyler Dearden exploded for four hits in five at-bats, knocking in three runs while scoring two of his own. The left-fielder was hitting .311 heading into July 29 but saw his average flounder to .278 just a week later. Yet, the left-handed hitting Dearden is now hitting .297 after his four-hit performance.
