Minor Notes: Feltman moves up, Dalbec has a power surge

Here are Thursday's minor league notes:

  • After winning the Carolina League Player of the Week award last week, Bobby Dalbec (pictured, right) picked up where he left off, launching two home runs and driving in five runs on Tuesday. He already has six home runs in July after hitting five in April, May, and June.
  • It was a short stay in Lowell for third-round pick Durbin Feltman as he was promoted to Greenville. Feltman struck out seven and did not allow a run in four innings with the Spinners, and in his first game with the Drive on Wednesday he struck out three and picked up the save.
  • The Red Sox recalled Jalen Beeks in the beginning of the week and optioned William Cuevas to Pawtucket. Beeks struggled in his appearance on Tuesday, allowing three runs on four hits over 2 1/3 innings against the Rangers. He was sent down on Wednesday, with Robby Scott coming up in his place.
  • The injury bug bit again, as 14th-ranked prospect Danny Diaz is now done for the year after breaking his hamate bone. Alex Speier reported that Diaz had surgery to repair the bone, and also that 15th-ranked prospect Antoni Flores, who was hitting .347 in the DSL before going down with an injury in mid-June, is expected back in a few weeks.
  • Both Austin Glorius and Zach Schellenger began rehab assignments in the GCL on Tuesday, with each pitcher starting their season off with a shutout inning.
  • The Red Sox will have three players appearing in the DSL All-Star Game on Sunday, with third baseman Ceddanne Rafaela, center fielder Angel Gonzalez, and right fielder Angel Maita all slated to see action.
  • The Red Sox signed Brainer Bonaci as part of their 2018 international free agent class on July 9. Bonaci is a shortstop from Venezuela and his bonus amount is undisclosed.
  • The Red Sox released 2015 11th-round pick Nick Hamilton. Hamilton appeared in six games for Lowell this season after finishing 2017 with a .185/.281/.278 line over 47 games with the club.
  • With his appearance in the Double-A All-Star game on Wednesday, Josh Ockimey has now made an All-Star game in each of his last four seasons. Kevin Thomas of the Portland Press Herald talked with Ockimey about his first-half results and his approach at the plate.
  • The average age for a position player in the New York-Penn League is approximately 21 years old, so 37-year-old Brandon Phillips certainly stands out on Lowell's roster. The 16-year veteran talked to Matt Langone of the Lowell Sun about his long offseason and his plans for making it back to the majors.
  • While radar guns and spin rates are the main thing most fans want to know about up-and-coming prospects, the mental side of the game can be just as important. In an interview with Shawn McFarland of the Hartford Courant, Mike Shawaryn talks about how he studies the thinking and approach of the game's top pitchers, and he also talks about the Red Sox mental coaching staff.
