Cup of Coffee: Pomeranz struggles, De Jesus tosses complete game
7/14 Cup of Coffee: Some impressive performances in the lower minors were the highlight of the night down on the farm, with Enmanuel De Jesus's (pictured) complete game and Darwinzon Hernandez's five shutout innings setting the pace. Drew Pomeranz struggled in his start for the PawSox, and Lowell pulled out a victory in extra innings.

Drew Pomeranz struggled through 3 2/3 innings in his third rehab start with the PawSox as they were doubled up by the Chiefs. Pomeranz allowed three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out three. He has now allowed nine runs over 9 1/3 innings since coming back on July 2. Josh D. Smith allowed two runs over four innings as he was hit with the loss. With their offense currently depleted by call-ups and injuries, the PawSox are using a bit of a makeshift lineup. Tony Renda and Kyle Wren led the way, with Renda slugging a two-run home run and a double, and Wren going 3 for 4 with a double.

A strong start from Teddy Stankiewicz was not enough against a talented Fisher Cats team, as the Sea Dogs dropped to 35-54. Stankiewicz gave up three runs over seven innings, walking three and striking out five. The right-hander now has quality starts in three of his last five outings. Michael Chavis went 1 for 4 with a walk while Tate Matheny went 2 for 4 with a double on a down night for the offense.

Darwinzon Hernandez had one of his best starts of the year as Salem blew out Wilmington. Hernandez tossed five shutout innings, allowing six hits while striking out six. He has not allowed a run in his last three starts which span 16 2/3 innings. Yankory Pimentel and Jake Cosart each followed with two scoreless innings to seal the victory.
Five different players notched multiple hits, led by Trenton Kemp who went 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBI. Jerry Downs only had one hit but he made it count with a two-run home run.

In the completion of Thursday's suspended game, Angel Padron threw five innings of one-run ball as he improved his record to 2-3. After not scoring in the two innings on Thursday, the Drive came out hot with four runs in the bottom of the third, led by Ryan Fitzgerald's RBI double and a pair of errors by the Braves. Fitzgerald, Kervin Suarez, Pedro Castellanos, and Tanner Nishioka all had 2-for-4 nights.
The Braves could not get anything going against Enmanuel De Jesus and he cruised to a complete-game victory. De Jesus surrendered only an unearned run over seven innings, giving up four hits and a walk while striking out five. It was a great bounce-back start after being hit hard his last two times on the mound. Fitzgerald had three more hits in this one and the Drive took advantage of three errors by the Braves.

This game only went seven innings before the rain came, with the Red Sox coming out on top. 2018 draft picks Nicholas Northcut and Brandon Howlett continued to hit the ball well, going 2 for 3 with Northcut adding an RBI. Howlett leads the team in batting and he raised his average to .324. Edilson Batista started the game with four shutout innings, and Zach Schellenger and Austin Glorius each made a rehab appearance, with Schellenger tossing a scoreless inning and Glorius allowing two runs.

With a 12-hit offensive attack, it is no surprise that Angel Maita led the way by going 3 for 4. He is now batting .349 with an on-base percentage right around .400. Jose Ramirez set the Red Sox up to win with five shutout innings but Robinson Parra allowed four runs in his only inning to take the loss.

Player of the Night: A complete game with an unearned run being the only blemish was more than enough for Enmanuel De Jesus to take the honors. The 21-year-old has bounced back and forth between Greenville and Salem this year and he has done a good job of racking up strikeouts, but he has also been too hittable as he entered the game with batters hitting .287 off of him.
