MLB Draft Day 3 Red Sox recap: Rounds 11-40
On Day 3 of the MLB Draft, the Red Sox looked to fill in some much-needed depth in the lower minors while targeting relief pitching and athletic position players who might have breakout potential. Kutter Crawford, taken last year, is a recent example of day-three talent making a name for himself already in his first year in the system while Jalen Beeks and Chandler Shepherd are a pair of Day 3 picks, both in 2014, that are on the fast track to the major leagues with Beeks making his major-league debut on Thursday and Shepherd knocking on the door at Triple-A Pawtucket.
Here is a pick-by-pick look at each of Wednesday's selections for the Red Sox:
11th Round: Nicholas Northcut, RHP/3B, William Mason High School (OH)
Northcut is a 6-foot-1 right-hander who is one of the better two-way talent players in the 2018 Draft class. Northcut has a fastball that peaks in the low 90s and a promising breaking ball but shows even more promise as a hitter, with MLB.com ranking him at No. 81 overall before the draft. The Vanderbilt University commit has a quick right-handed swing with loft and his strength combine to generate impressive raw power. He projects as a third baseman if he isn't a pitcher, but it may be hard to lure him away from Nashville.
12th Round: Chase Shugart, RHP, University of Texas
As a junior, Shugart struck out 38 batters in 43 2/3 innings pitched, working out of the Longhorns bullpen. A bit on the smaller side at 5-foot-10, 180 pounds, Shugart's frame might be best served in a bullpen role.
13th Round: Dylan Hardy, OF, University of South Alabama
A line of .331/.409/.853 line doesn't immediately jump off the page but 19 stolen bases to go along with four home runs and 27 RBI's helps in the case of this junior outfielder. Baseball America had Hardy ranked at 492 while he went unranked by MLB.com.
14th Round: Nicholas Lucky, 2B, Cocalico High School (PA)
Lucky is a 6-foot-1, 185-pound Coastal Carolina commit who can play almost any infield position and the outfield. Lucky bats left-handed but throws with his right, and was named a 2018 Rawlings-Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American. In 20 games played this senior season, Lucky boasts a .541 average with 33 hits, 25 RBI's and 24 runs. He plays out of the All-Star Baseball Academy.
15th Round: Andrew Politi, RHP, Seton Hall University
A weapon out of the bullpen his senior season at Seton Hall, the 6-foot-1 right-handed Politi struck out 41 batters in 23 innings of work, compiling 132 total strikeouts in 94.2 innings during this college career with the Pirates. Politi made his mark felt in the BIG EAST Tournament, striking out 15 batters in nine innings.
16th Round: Christopher Machamer, RHP, University of Kentucky
It looks like the Red Sox hit on their 16th round selection last year in Kutter Crawford, a right-hander from a southern college baseball school, and Boston hopes its accomplished the same with this 6-foot-1 right-hander from the University of Kentucky. A sophomore, with a penchant for Icey Hot and other pregame rituals, pitched for the Brewster Whitecaps in the Cape Cod Baseball League this past summer, sporting a 2-0 record and 1.35 ERA in three games. This spring with the Wildcats, Machamer has 38 strikeouts across 35 1/3 innings on a team that went 34-22.

17th Round: Lane Milligan, C, Oklahoma City University
Milligan led the NAIA in hits (103), RBI's (90), triples (15), and set the new NAIA single-season record for triples in the process. The 6-foot-2 senior, a transfer from New Mexico State after his sophomore year, ranked top five nationally in batting average with a .462 mark, adding 15 home runs and 72 runs scored.
18th Round: Eddie Jimenez, RHP, Southeastern University
Jimenez, a 6-foot-2 righty, marks the fourth relief pitcher taken by the Red Sox in their first eight selections on Day 3. He posted a 1.35 ERA in 26 2/3 innings while striking out 38 for the Fire.
19th Round: Jonathan Ortega, 2B, Texas State University
A 2018 Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference First Team selection, the 5-foot-7 Ortega hit just .280 this season with five home runs and 35 RBI's. In 2017, he hit .339 and boasted a .972 fielding percentage while leading the Sun Belt in both runs (54) and stolen bases (22). He is reliable, however, having made started his entire freshman year, 55 of 56 contests last year and 59 contests this season.
20th Round: Kason Howell, OF, Liberty Christian School (TX)
A University of Auburn commit, Howell was named a 2018 Rawlings-Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American, like 14th round draft pick Nicholas Lucky. Howell is a 6-foot right-hander who is a switch-hitter.
21st Round: Brandon Howlett, 3B, George Jenkins High School (FL)
Howlett, a 6-foot-1 third baseman, hit five home runs in his junior season at George Jenkins High in Florida, earning him 2018 Rawlings-Perfect Game 2nd Team All-American status coming into this season. He is a Florida State University commit.
22nd Round: Yusniel Padron-Artilles, RHP, Miami Dade College
In 14 NJCAA starts, this right-hander had a 2.17 ERA in 83 innings while striking out 77. He also added two complete games and is the first projected starting pitcher to be selected by the Sox on Day 3.
23rd Round: Ryan Fernandez, RHP, Hillsborough Community College
In NJCAA action, the 6-foot Fernandez made 17 appearances, going 8-2 with a 4.56 ERA in nine starts. He struck out 82 in 81 innings of work. He will turn 20 on June 11.
24th Round: Logan Browning, LHP, Florida Southern College
Browning is just the second left-hander to be nabbed by the Red Sox in this year's draft. He's on the smaller side at 5-foot-8 and 175 pound, but Browning has been drafted twice before in 2014 and 2016. He's a bit of a two-way talent as Browning performed well both pitching (3.08 ERA) and hitting (4.52 batting average) this year at Florida Southern.
25th Round: Caleb Ramsey, OF, Heritage High School (GA)
Another 2018 Rawlings-Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American, Ramsey, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound 18-year-old hits from the left side while throwing from the right. In 29 games played at Heritage High, he has a .523 average with 45 hits, 38 RBI's and 30 runs scored. He is a Butler University commit.
26th Round: Korby Batesole, SS, Fresno State University
Batesole, a senior, had a .318/.376/.800 line this season with the Bulldogs. Appeared in 56 or more games in each of the last three seasons.
27th Round: Gregorio Reyes, LHP, No School
Not much information on this left-handed pitcher who doesn't have a high school listed.

28th Round: Kris Jackson, RHP, Corban University
Jackson, a 5-foot-11 righty, hurled 100 innings this season at Corban, striking out 70 while compiling a 9-4 record and 2.70 ERA. He spent two seasons playing at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon before transferring to Corban University, which is in the same city.
29th Round: Mason Ronan, LHP, Penn Cambria High School (PA)
This 6-foot-2, 190-pound lefty is sticking close to home with a commitment to the University of Pittsburgh. Ronan was a 2018 Rawlings-Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American for the Atlantic region. He had a bit of a disappointing senior season at Penn Cambria with a 4.38 ERA in 30.1 innings pitch, but he did rack up 73 strikeouts.
30th Round: Ryan Bliss, SS, Troup County High School (GA)
Just like Red Sox' 20th round selection Kason Howell, the 5-foot-8 Bliss is a University of Auburn commit. He was a 2018 Rawlings-Perfect Game 2nd Tam All-American for the Southeast region.
31st Round: Connor Berry, RHP, University of Oklahoma
Continuing with the trend of relievers from the college ranks, the 6-foot Berry struck out 23 in 18 1/3 innings this season for the Sooners and sports a .170 average against in his three seasons and 61.1 innings pitched for Oklahoma. A junior, Berry had a stellar sophomore season by pitching 28 innings in 22 appearances, striking out 39 to a tune of a 1.93 ERA.
32nd Round: Brandon Perez, OF, Miami Beach High School (FL)

34th Round: Jared Poland, 2B, Cathedral High Schools (IN)
Poland, 5-foot-11, has a compact swing with quick hands and bat speed. The University of Louisville commit may develop some power as well. Poland isn't as sound defensively, though, with heavy legs and footwork in the field.
35th Round: Jeremiah Boyd, C, Hickory Ridge High School (NC)
The second catcher taken on Day 3 by the Red Sox, Boyd is 17-year-old backstop that is a Presbyterian College commit.
36th Round: Jake Dukart, 3B, Lake Oswego High School (OR)
Dukart is a 6-foot-3, 180-pound senior from Lake Oswego and is an Oregon State commit. The right-hander can play shortstop and also pitches as well while hitting from the left side. He was a 2018 Rawlings-Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American for the West region.
37th Round: Davis Wendzel, SS, Baylor University
