Minor Notes: Trio selected to Triple-A All-Star Game; big club injury woes continue

Here are Friday's Minor Notes:

• Jalen Beeks (pictured) was selected to the Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday. He is currently the International League leader with 101 strikeouts, which he has done in 75 innings.
• Ryan Brasier and Rusney Castillo will also be playing in the game on July 11 in Columbus, Ohio. Castillo will be making his second consecutive appearance, while Brasier is second in the International League with 11 saves.
• In Portland, first baseman Josh Ockimey and left-handers Kyle Hart and Matt Kent were selected for the Eastern League All-Star Game. Ockimey, currently ranked ninth in the SoxProspects.com rankings, is hitting .257/.367/.420 with 11 home runs on the year. Hart (5-5, 3.72 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 52 K in 75 IP) and Kent (5-5, 3.68 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 71 K in 71 IP) have been consistent contributors in the Sea Dogs' rotation.
• The Red Sox announced the signing of Brandon Phillips to a minor-league deal on Wednesday. He has not played this year, but is a 16-year major league veteran and will provide organizational depth at second base and third base.
• The team also placed Steven Wright on the 10-day disabled list with left knee inflammation. Justin Haley was recalled to Boston to replace him and Brian Johnson took his start on Thursday.
• WEEI's Vincent Gallo discussed the Rusney Castillo situation, as he is performing well enough to earn a spot in the Triple-A All-Star Game but due to his contract, he is off the 40-man roster.
• Tyler Thornburg has an unknown role as his second rehab stint in the minor leagues comes to an end, writes the Boston Globe's Julian Benbow.
• Benbow also discussed Drew Pomeranz' progress, as he did well in a simulated game on Wednesday, signaling a rehab assignment could be soon.
• On Thursday, August 16, the Pawtucket Red Sox will become the Pawtucket Hot Wieners as part of a promotion to honor the Rhode Island treat.
