Cup of Coffee: Farm finds power from Esplin, Hardy on productive day

6/19 Cup of Coffee: All four teams in action on Monday got a win on the farm with Pawtucket, Portland, Salem and Greenville all with the day off. There wasn't any lack of power as the lone Sox farm team without a home run put up 20 runs. Tyler Esplin (pictured) keyed the Spinners victory with a homer, and Chad Hardy had two in the GCL Red Sox' win.

Lowell Spinners 5, Staten Island Yankees (NYY) 3

A two-run double from Andre Colon scored Xavier LeGrant and Tyler Esplin in the bottom of the eighth inning and Alberto Franco shut the door in the ninth to net the Spinners their second win of the season. The key two-run hit came after Oddanier Mosqueda blew a save by giving up a run to the Yankees in the seventh.

Esplin also cranked a two-run home run in the bottom of the second, which scored LeGrant. Esplin went 1 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs while LeGrant went 2 for 3 with two runs. Tyler Dearden also recorded two hits for the Spinners. Hunter Haworth pitched well over five innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out six. It was Haworth's first start for Lowell after starting four games for Greenville.

DSL Red Sox1 5, DSL Marlins 2

Jose Mejias put together his second-straight multi-hit game, going 3 for 4 with a home run, two runs and an RBI to power the Red Sox past the Marlins. Mejias hit a solo shot in the sixth inning, his first of the season, while teammate Ceddanne Rafaela blasted his second homer of the year in the third.

Kelvin Sanchez picked up his first win with five innings of four-hit ball, allowing one unearned run while striking out five. Carlos Cortes garnered his first save of the season with 2/3 innings of relief.

DSL Red Sox2 20, DSL Indians/Brewers 6

A total of 19 hits, plus eight errors from the DSL Indians/Brewers, made way to a 20-run effort from the Red Sox. The Sox didn't smack a single home run and only had three total extra-base hits, however. Nelfy Abreu collected two of those with a double and a triple, and drove in six runs, while Oscar Rangel recorded two hits to go along with three runs and three runs batted in.

Cristofe Tineo got the win in relief with two innings of one-hit ball.

GCL Red Sox 11, GCL Rays 3

A seven-run eighth inning broke things open for the Red Sox, who gathered a total of 12 hits while allowing just three in the victory. Chad Hardy led the way with two home runs, blasting one in the second and a second in the sixth, and compiling three total hits. Juan Hernandez had the big hit in the eighth, a three-run blast with two outs. Hernandez went 2 for 4 with two runs and three RBIs.

Rayniel Adames recorded the win for the Sox, giving up two hits and two runs across five innings of work. The victory marked the first one of the season for the GCL Red Sox.

Player of the Day: Usually if someone hits two home runs (ahem, Chad Hardy) that puts them in the driver's seat for Player of the Day honors. But it was a one-homer performance from Tyler Esplin that stole the honors on Monday. Esplin's two-run homer gave the Spinners a lead, or tie of the lead, for five innings before the 2017 seventh-round draft pick came around to score on Andre Colon's two-run double to provide the cushion in Lowell's win over Staten Island. The 18-year-old left-handed hitting outfielder has four hits in four games with the Spinners and has reached base seven times in 14 at-bats.
