Cup of Coffee: Cuevas wills PawSox to win; power outage on the farm

6/12 Cup of Coffee: On a day when nobody in the system hit a home run, William Cuevas (pictured, right) powered Pawtucket to a victory by spinning eight spectacular innings and allowing just three hits and one run in the lone victory on the farm. Rusney Castillo extended his hit streak to nine games with a single while Santiago Espinal continues to get hits for Salem, registering his 11th base knock in his last 12 games.

Pawtucket Red Sox 3, Syracuse Chiefs (WAS) 1

A dominant pitching performance from William Cuevas delivered the PawSox a win over the Chiefs at NBT Bank Stadium. The 27-year-old right-hander pitched eight innings, allowing three hits and one run with six strikeouts, with his lone mistake being a solo home run in the fifth inning during his fourth win of the season. Bobby Poyner picked up his second save of the year.  

Ivan De Jesus went 2 for 3 with a double and RBI while Mike Olt continues to swing a hot bat, going 3 for 3 with a double and RBI as well. Rusney Castillo extended his hitting streak to nine games.

Potomac Nationals (WAS) 9, Salem Red Sox 4 (Game 1, 7 inn.)

A seven-run fifth inning from the Nationals broke open a 1-1 tie as the Red Sox couldn't recover in Game 1 of a doubleheader. Jake Thompson was charged with the innings first four runs allowed before Joan Martinez came in relief and allowed three earned runs while recording just one out before Jared Oliver got the final out of the inning.

Thompson took the loss on the mound for Salem, allowing eight hits and five runs in 4 1/3 innings of work.  Jerry Downs had two of the Red Sox' three runs batted in, going 2 for 3 in the loss.

Potomac Nationals (WAS) 4, Salem Red Sox 0 (Game 2, 7 inn.)

After mustering just four hits in Game 1 of a doubleheader, the Red Sox' bats were silent again in the nightcap of the twin-bill, as doubles by Santiago Espinal and Roldani Baldwin were the only two hits in Salem's shutout loss.

Jhonathan Diaz took the defeat, allowing seven hits and three runs, matching the same amount of innings pitched (4 1/3) to his teammate in Thompson, who started Game 1.

Rome Braves (ATL) 8, Greenville Drive 2
Following a tough outing from its starting pitcher in Kutter Crawford a day earlier, Greenville got five scoreless innings out of Durin O'Linger but squandered it as relievers Marcos Lantigua, and Juan Florentino gave up eight runs (seven earned) combined, as the Braves rallied to beat the Drive.

Rome scored four runs in the eighth and three in the ninth to account for 14-total hits. Greenville had just five, with Lorenzo Cedrola and Michael Osinski each driving in a run.

DSL Athletics (OAK) 10, DSL Red Sox1 4
Jimenez Gilberto, Jesus Maita, and Lewis Baez all collected triples while the former and latter both had RBI's, as Emerson Ortiz picked up the loss on the hill.

DSL Pirates (PIT) 5, DSL Red Sox2 3
Angel Maita had two hits and a run to pace a Red Sox lineup that had only four hits combined. Cristofe Tineo got the loss, giving up two runs over 3 innings of work.

Player of the Day: By matching a career-high in innings pitch, hurling 8 innings of one-run ball on Monday, Pawtucket right-hander William Cuevas willed his team to victory over the Chiefs. He threw 67 of his 106 pitches for strikes and over his last four starts has a line of 27 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 7 BB, and 21 K. In that span, dating back to May 27, the 27-year-old has seen his ERA drop from 4.75 to 2.91.
