Cup of Coffee: Acosta powers Drive; Sea Dogs mount comeback

The PawSox mustered 11 total hits but only two were for extra bases as Pawtucket went 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position. Every batter had at least one hit as Cole Sturgeon (2 for 5) and Ramon Flores (2 for 4) both had multi-hit performances.

Portland plated three runs in the bottom of the eighth to come from behind and squeeze out the RubberDucks. Tanner Nishioka, Jhon Nunez, and Jeremy Rivera all scored in the fateful frame to lift the Sea Dogs. Nishioka garnered his first hit with the Sea Dogs in his second game with the club since a promotion from Greenville.
Mike Shawaryn was dealing on the hill, tossing seven innings of four-hit, one-run ball while striking out eight. He got a no-decision but lowered his ERA to 3.41 in the process. Jordan Weems picked up the win, and Josh Taylor got the save.

Both Tanner Houck (5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 6 Ks) and Daniel Gonzalez (3 IP, 7 H, 5 R) were roughed up by the Pelicans in the Red Sox' loss. Brett Netzer went 3 for 5 with three RBI, and Roldani Baldwin collected two hits in the losing effort.

Despite only having three hits, thanks to a double and triple from Victor Acosta, the Drive drove past the RiverDogs. Acosta, who has a hit in each of his last 12 games, smashed a two-run triple in the first inning before lacing a two-run double in the bottom of the third.
Denyi Reyes picked up his fifth victory of the season by pitching seven innings, allowing five hits and no runs, while striking out five. He threw 64 of his 92 pitches for strikes and saw his ERA drop to 2.01.

The Red Sox and Athletics combined for 24 runs, 23 hits and 10 errors in a wild win for the Red Sox. Gilberto Jimenez, Ceddanne Rafaela, Brandon Rincones and Lewis Baez all recorded two hits in the win with Jesus Maita smacking a home run and picking up three RBI.

Johan Martinez pitched well, tossing three innings of scoreless relief and giving up just two hits while striking out five in a losing effort for the Red Sox. Both Nelly Abreu and Ronaldo Pulgar collected three hits.

Player of the Day: With three hits -- including two extra-base knocks -- in the Drive's win over the RiverDogs, Victor Acosta extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Acosta has hit in every game since May 25 and has seen his average climb 24 points as the right-handed hitting Acosta now sports a .322 average in 177 at-bats. He has six home runs and 26 RBI so far this season.
