Cup of Coffee: Reyes hurls three-hit shutout
5/28 Cup of Coffee: Outstanding pitching was the story on Sunday, with four affiliates combining to allow only four runs while sweeping the slate. Denyi Reyes (pictured) delivered a three-hit complete game shutout to lead Greenville. Kyle Hart, William Cuevas, and Bryan Mata all turned in strong outings as well, with only Mata failing to complete seven innings.

William Cuevas and Brandon Workman combined for a three hitter at McCoy Stadium. Cuevas went the first seven, striking out six and walking two, surrendering just two hits. Workman went two frames notching his first save of the season. It was the fifth time in his last six outings that Workman hadn't allowed a run. Tzu-Wei Lin collected the only two hits for the PawSox. He singled in the first and came around to score on a Sam Travis sacrifice fly, and added the game's only extra-base hit with an eighth-inning double.

Kyle Hart went eight innings for the first time as a professional to lead the Sea Dogs and snap a three-game losing streak. Hart surrendered two runs (one earned) on seven hits through eight frames. He struck out six, walked only one, and threw 70 of his 100 pitches for strikes. Jordan Weems tossed a scoreless ninth to close out the win. Jeremy Rivera was a catalyst out of the leadoff spot, reaching base five times and coming around to sore four runs. Rivera had three singles and two walks, boosting his on-base percentage from .282 to .301. Jantzen Witte doubled twice as part of a 3-for-4 afternoon.

While he was the only starting pitcher on the day to fail to record a quality start, it was a solid outing for Bryan Mata. The 19-year-old allowed two runs on four hits in five innings, striking out four. Mata's biggest issue this season continues to be his efficiency. He needed 93 pitches to complete those five innings, throwing 50 of those pitches for strikes and walking four. Roldani Baldwin supported Mata with a 2-for-5 day, including some insurance in the form of a solo homer in the ninth. CJ Chatham had another multi-hit game, his fifth in his last eight contests.

Denyi Reyes was dominant, needing only 92 pitches to complete a three-hit shutout of Columbia. Reyes struck out eight, and only allowed one Firefly to get as far as second base. The effort lowered Reyes' ERA to 2.26, which matches the right-hander's mark across four pro seasons. Kervin Suarez chipped in a pair of doubles, scoring a pair of runs. Everlouis Lozada added a double of his own, while Ricardo Cubillan and Frankie Rios each had two hits out of the two top spots in the order.

Player of the Day: Though he's never been regarded as a top prospect, Denyi Reyes has performed at each stop during his rise through the Red Sox system. The six-foot-four righty has posted ERAs of 2.88, 2.34, and 1.45 in the Dominican Summer League, Gulf Coast League, and New York-Penn League, respectively, before getting placed with Greenville out of spring training. While his 2.26 ERA is impressive on the surface, Reyes's underlying numbers are even more amazing, with 65 strikeouts and only six walks in 59 2/3 innings.
