Cup of Coffee: Beeks tosses another gem


4/29 Cup of Coffee: Another dazzling performance from left-hander Jalen Beeks secured the win for the PawSox, while the Red Sox and Drive both took losses and the Sea Dogs were postponed for the second straight day.

Jalen Beeks continues to be the story of the season so far, as he struck out 11 in 5 2/3 innings to pace the PawSox to a win over the Bisons. Beeks allowed only three hits and two runs while issuing one walk. He threw 64 of his 93 pitches for strikes and didn't allow an extra-base hit. It was his second win of the year as Beeks' ERA dropped to 1.37.

Jordan Betts belted a bases-clearing double in the top of the six to break things open in a four-run inning for the PawSox, making it 5-0 at the time. Ivan De Jesus Jr. singled home Mike Ohlman in the top of the ninth to cap off a 3-for-5 day for the second baseman. The team had a total of 12 hits in the win with Jeremy Barfield and Chad De La Guerra the lone two players without a base knock.

Saturday night's game was postponed due to wet field conditions and will be made up as a single-admission doubleheader on June 19th at 5 p.m.

The Red Sox wasted a fine outing from Jake Thompson as Salem could muster only four hits in the loss. Thompson struck out seven in 4 1/3  innings of work, allowing two hits and two runs, issuing four walks. Algenis Martinez didn't fare well in relief, allowing five hits, three runs in 3 2/3 innings. Bobby Dalbec scored the lone run and was 1 for 4. Brett Netzer, Kyri Washington, and Chris Madera had the other three hits for the Red Sox.

A day after Greenville's 13-game losing streak came to an end, the RiverDogs handed the Drive a loss as Greenville scored its only runs in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back RBI doubles from Victor Acosta and C.J. Chatham. Both players went 2 for 4 and accounted for all of Greenville's hits. Acosta's batting average rose to .373 while Chatham saw his climb to .352.

Alberto Franco took the loss while Jhonathan Diaz allowed four hits and two runs in 4 2/3 innings of work while striking out four.

Player of the Day: Jalen Beeks has been flat out amazing to start the year. The 24-year-old left-hander has 37 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings, 63 swings-and-misses in four starts, and two consecutive starts with double-digit K's. He picked up his second win of the season in the PawSox 6-3 victory over the Bisons after striking out 11 in 5 2/3 innings. Beeks is now 2-0 in his last two starts and has 21 strikeouts over those 11 2/3 innings.
