Fort Report: Scouting update and another home run for Travis

Here are Monday's minor league notes:

• Top prospect Jay Groome worked out with Chris Sale in the offseason, and Groome talked with Scott Lauber of ESPN.com about what it was like to work with one of the best pitchers in baseball, and Sale discussed what he saw in Groome's work ethic. 

• The most recent scouting report update on SoxProspects.com is eighth-ranked Mike Shawaryn. As always you can find the most recent scouting report updates on the Scouting Log. 

• Sam Travis (pictured, right) is only hitting .250 this spring, but he now leads the team with four home runs after launching a three-run home run on Saturday. He is third in slugging percentage among players receiving consistent playing time, trailing only Rafael Devers and Andrew Benintendi, and this was exactly the spring he needed to get his prospect status back on track. 

• After a dominant 2017 season that was split between Salem and Portland, Bobby Poyner has now put himself in the mix for a bullpen role in Boston. Ian Browne of MLB.com talked with Poyner about the pitches that have helped the left-hander keep a 1.23 ERA over 7 1/3 innings this spring. 

• Brian Johnson has had his fair share of bad luck over the last few years, but as he explained to Ricky Doyle of NESN.com, the stars are aligning for him this spring. Johnson clearly has a more positive mindset this year, and it is already paying dividends. 

• Right-hander Austin Glorius will miss the season after suffering a severe ankle injury. Alex Speier of the Boston Globe confirmed on Twitter that Glorius tore three of the four ligaments in his ankle. Glorius had a 4.85 ERA over 55 2/3 innings with Salem last season. 

• Eric Gomez of ESPN.com had an in-depth interview with Esteban Quiroz, who the Red Sox signed out of the Mexican League this past November. Quiroz talked about meeting with Astros second basemen Jose Altuve at the World Baseball Classic, and how possible number 5 starter Hector Velazquez has helped his transition into the organization. 

• It has been eight years since Ryan Westmoreland first underwent brain surgery, and last Monday he had his 16th surgery, with this one aimed at reconstructing some of his facial muscles. Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald talked with Westmoreland as he continues to transition into his life away from professional baseball. 

• The Red Sox reassigned Oscar Hernandez to minor league camp. The strong defensive catcher was signed as a minor league free agent in January. 

• The following minor league players (not on the 40-man or a non-roster invitee to major league camp) saw action in major league games this Thursday through Sunday: Mike Miller, Trevor Kelley, Tate Matheny, Danny Mars, Jeremy Rivera, Jordan Procyshen, Adam Lau, Ryan Scott, Chris Madera, Cole Sturgeon, Luke Tendler, Jhon Nunez, and Matthew Gorst.
