Fall/Winter League Roundup: McGrath debuts, Jerez pitches well


This continues our series of weekly roundups of the Fall/Winter Leagues. Coverage will continue every Monday into January. For the full list of Red Sox prospects participating in these leagues, check out our Fall & Winter Leagues page, which will be updated continuously through January. This week's roundup covers the period from November 27 - December 3.

Dominican Baseball League
After debuting last week, Anuery Tavarez appeared in just two games this week. Without an official at-bat, Tavarez walked and scored a run. Chris Madera also saw limited action, appearing in three games and going 0 for 1. 

Roenis Elias was roughed up in his only start of the week, allowing three earned runs on six hits and two walks in just 2 2/3 innings. Williams Jerez (pictured) had a better week, tossing 1 2/3 scoreless frames spanning three different appearances. He struck out two and walked one. 

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League
Deiner Lopez played well in three games, going 2 for 5 with a double, two walks, two runs, and an RBI. He has his average up to .325 in 80 at-bats this winter. Juan Hernandez appeared in three games, but went just 0 for 1 with three runs scored. Josh Smith faced one batter last week on the mound and gave up a hit. 

Australian Baseball League
Left-handed pitcher Daniel McGrath made his first appearance of the winter last week. He tossed 2/3 of an inning and did not allow a hit or a walk, although he hit a batter. He did not strike anybody out. 

Venezuelan Developmental Program
The Boston team went 1-1 again last week, scoring eight runs and allowing 10 over the two contests. Ricardo Cubillan went 2 for 7 with a double, a walk, and an RBI. Willis Figueroa had a big game on Thursday, going 1 for 2 with a triple, three walks, two runs, and an RBI out of the leadoff spot. Eduard Conde also played well that day, going 2 for 5 with a pair of doubles and a pair of runs. 

On the mound, Ritzi Mendoza was fantastic in a relief appearance, allowing one run in three innings while striking out six and walking none. 

Colombian Professional Baseball League
Jose Sermo had a down week, going just 2 for 14. However, he finished strong by going 2 for 5 with a double over his last two games, breaking an 0-for-9 skid.
