Fall/Winter Roundup: Travis, Marrero injured, Chavis appears in AFL all-star game

This continues our series of weekly roundups of the Fall/Winter Leagues. Coverage will continue every Monday into January. This week's roundup covers the period from October 30-November 5.

Arizona Fall League

Michael Chavis appeared in the AFL Fall Stars game, batting third and playing third base for the West, who lost the game 4-2. Chavis went 0 for 3 with a pair of strikeouts and a walk. In three other games for Peoria last week, Chavis went 3 for 10 with a double, a triple, two RBI, two runs, and just one strikeout. After debuting at first base a couple weeks ago, Chavis continued to play there, starting back-to-back games at first on Wednesday and Thursday. In two games, Chad De La Guerra went just 1 for 9 and Josh Tobias went 2 for 7 with three RBI, three runs, two walks, and one strikeout.

Henry Owens was solid in his start last week, allowing just two runs on three hits in five innings. More importantly for Owens, he walked just one. Bobby Poyner impressed, tossing a pair of scoreless one-inning appearances. He struck out three and walked none. Ty Buttrey had a nearly identical week to Poyner, throwing two scoreless innings with three punchouts and no walks or hits allowed. Kevin McAvoy pitched a scoreless frame as well.

Dominican Baseball League

Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reported that the Red Sox have called first baseman Sam Travis and infielder Devin Marrero home due to injuries. Dave Dombrowski said the injuries are not too serious. Marrero was just 2 for 16, and Travis was 5 for 22 with a pair of doubles during their time in the Dominican. Blake Swihart played in one game and went 1 for 3 with a walk and two strikeouts. Santiago Espinal made a start and went 1 for 4 with a single and a run. Jhon Nunez made his first appearance of the winter and went 0 for 2.

Justin Haley pitched very well, going six innings in his start and allowing just one unearned run. He struck out three and did not walk a batter. Marcus Walden also had a great start, going five scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. Williams Jerez pitched for the first time since October 20 and tossed a scoreless frame with two strikeouts and no walks.

Mexican Pacific League

Chandler Shepherd has been starting so far this fall, and Dombrowski gave some insight to Smith at MassLive.com on the experiment. Shepherd was roughed up a little bit for the first time this winter, allowing four runs (three earned) in just four innings. He did strike out six, but walked three. Overall, Shepherd has a 2.89 ERA this fall in four starts.

Bryce Brentz had a decent week, going 4 for 16 with a double and a three-run home run, raising his league-leading total to six homers. He walked three times and struck out just twice.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League

Victor Acosta was just 0 for 3 and Juan Hernandez appeared in six games but had just one at-bat. Deiner Lopez was 3 for 9 with a pair of walks. Dedgar Jimenez struggled on the mound, allowing six runs (two earned) in 2/3 of an inning. He walked two and struck out one.

Venezuelan Development Program

Isaias Lucena had a big week, going 7 for 13 with three multi-hit games. He added three walks and a double. Pedro Castellanos went 4 for 10 with a double and a home run. Ricardo Cubillan played well, going 3 for 7 with two walks.

Jose Gonzalez pitched well in a pair of outings, tossing 5 1/3 innings allowing two earned runs with seven strikeouts and one walk. Luis Colmenares tossed five innings in a start, allowing just one hit and no runs with five strikeouts.

Colombian Professional Baseball League

Boston catcher Sandy Leon looked like he might be playing in this circuit, which started play on Friday, this winter, but he was not listed on the opening day roster for Barranquilla, which acquired his rights in a trade. (Leon is Venezuelan, but according to the LCBP website, he is eligible to play in the league as a local player because his wife is Colombian.) Minor league free agent Jose Sermo will be playing in the circuit for Monteria as a foreign player.
