Minor Notes: September call-ups, minor league playoffs loom

Here are Monday's minor league notes:

• SoxProspects Director of Scouting Ian Cundall posted his latest Scouting Scratch, taking an in-depth look at a couple PawSox players that could get a cup of coffee with the big league squad when rosters expand in September: pitcher Jalen Beeks and outfielder Bryce Brentz.
• Staff Writer Nick Rabasco got a look at Trey Ball in Portland in what has been an up-and-down season for the former seventh-overall draft pick.
• The Sea Dogs announced on Friday that Jeremy Barfield and Danny Mars were named to the Eastern League Season Ending All-Star Team. The team is voted on by Eastern League managers, coaches and media personnel.
• Baseball America noted that Rafael Devers wasn't the only third base prospect to make a big jump in 2017, highlighting Michael Chavis as parts of its "Ten Players Who Made the Leap in 2017."
• The scouting report is out on Devers, according to Julian Benbow of the Boston Globe, as major league pitchers try to figure out how to slow down the young phenom.
• Brian MacPherson of ESPN.com writes that the Red Sox just may be counting on Devers to counter those adjustments and carry the Boston offense.
• Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk was inducted into another hall over the weekend - the Pawtucket Red Sox Hall of Fame. Fisk was honored in an on-field ceremony at McCoy Stadium.
• Jen McCaffrey of MassLive.com profiled Red Sox scout Manny Nanita, who discovered both Rafael Devers and former Red Sox prospect and current San Diego Padre Manuel Margot.

Players of the Week 8/21-8/27

Ryan Scott, OF, Greenville Drive

6 G, 23 AB, 8 H, 2 2B, 3 HR, 4 R, 14 RBI, 1 SB, 3 BB, 5 K

In a year in which Scott (pictured, above), a 2016 seventh-round draft pick, has struggled at the plate, this past week's power explosion was a welcome turn of events for the 24-year-old Arkansas native. He had been hitting just .133 since the start of July when his hot streak began. He homered in four straight games for Greenville, including the first two grand slams "in [his] life," according to an article on the Drive website.

Hector Velazquez, RHP, Pawtucket Red Sox

1 GS, 7.0 IP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K

Velazquez put together perhaps his most impressive outing of the season, hurling seven innings of one-hit ball. Velazquez, who has been the up-and-down swing man for Boston this season, has posted a 2.23 ERA in 101 IP for Pawtucket. The 28-year-old Mexico native is likely to get the call back up to Boston when rosters expand in September.
