Minor Notes: Red Sox trade for Davis for stretch run

Here are Thursday's minor league notes:

• The Red Sox acquired speedy outfielder and (brief) 2016 World Series hero, Rajai Davis (pictured), in exchange for outfielder Rafael Rincones, according to multiple reports. Dave Dombrowski said the team was interested in Davis as a Dave Roberts-style pinch runner down the stretch even before Jackie Bradley Jr. sprained his thumb, but the injury accelerated the timetable. Rincones, 18, has played in 58 games over the past two seasons in the Dominican Summer League. He was hitting .258/.373/.369 with one home run and 19 RBI when he was traded.
• The Red Sox made a few corresponding moves as a result of the Davis trade. Steve Selsky was designated for assignment to make room for Davis on the 40-man roster. Deven Marrero and Hector Velazquez were optioned to Pawtucket, while Blaine Boyer was activated from the disabled list.
• Jon Heyman, now writing for Fanrag Sports Network, noted that both the Red Sox and the Yankees have been building their international free agent money pool via trades over the past year. What might each team do with $8 million? Heyman suggests they might go after Japanese sensation Shohei Otani.
• The Greenville Drive experienced a very unique delay in their game on Monday - one for the solar eclipse. Fluor Field was right in the path of totality for the eclipse and the game was delayed for 22 minutes so the teams and the season-hight crowd of 6,636 could witness the celestial event. Greenville manager Darren Fenster and general manager Eric Jarinko spoke with the Boston Globe about the unique event.
