Minor Notes: Red Sox sign fourth rounder Thompson

Here are Monday's minor league notes:

 
• Rafael Devers (pictured) was the lone member of the Red Sox organization to play in Sunday's Futures Game. At the plate, Devers was 1 for 4 with a single and a pair of strikeouts. He laced a line drive single to right field in his first plate appearance off Futures Game MVP Brent Honeywell. 
• Alex Speier of the Boston Globe wrote about Devers and how quickly he has risen in the system at such a young age. Devers talks about how he handles being called one of the top prospects in baseball and how he has made adjustments in Double-A that have kept him from prolonged slumps. 
• Brad Almquist of the Boston Globe writes about Jalen Beeks and his success so far at Triple-A. Beeks credits his success to improved mechanics and command. 
• Sea Dogs left-handed pitcher Williams Jerez will play in the Eastern League All-Star game, as he has been added to the Eastern Division roster. He has a 3.53 ERA in 43 1/3 innings this season with 38 strikeouts and 14 walks. He joins teammates Rafael Devers, Danny Mars, and Teddy Stankiewicz. The game will be played on Wednesday in New Hampshire. 
• PawSox catcher Blake Swihart's rough season has continued, as he was placed on the DL with left ankle inflammation. This is the same ankle that Swihart injured while with Boston early in 2016. He is hitting just .213/.265/.327 at Pawtucket this year. 
• The Red Sox have officially signed their fourth round pick Jake Thompson for just under slot at $350,000. Thompson has been assigned to the Lowell Spinners and has not pitched yet. In addition to Thompson, Boston also signed 14th-rounder Aaron Perry, 20th-rounder David Durden, 29th-rounder Tyler Dearden, and 30th-rounder Andrew Carber before the deadline. Tate Matheny, OF, Salem Red Sox

After a tremendous week, Matheny has his batting average up to .257 this season. Despite striking out 80 times, Matheny has shown good plate discipline this year, drawing 32 walks. He is also riding a current seven-game hitting streak and is batting .295 over his last 10 ballgames. The 2015 fourth rounder also already has as many home runs (five) as he did during all of last season with Greenville.

Edgar Olmos, LHP, Pawtucket Red Sox
2 GS, 13 2/3 IP, 1 ER, 0.66 ERA, 9 H, 0.73 WHIP, 1 BB, 9 K

Olmos is emerging as a serious candidate to be called up to Boston and make a start should they need one in the future. In five starts with Pawtucket, the left-hander has thrown 28 2/3 innings and allowed a total of just four runs (two earned). His ERA over his past 10 appearances stands at an impressive 1.22. For the entire season, he has thrown 60 1/3 innings and has posted a 1.64 ERA, a .194 batting average against, and a 1.06 WHIP.
