Red Sox select Tanner Nishioka with their ninth-round pick
With their ninth-round pick (281st overall) in the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Tanner Nishioka, a second baseman from Division III Pomona-Pitzer. Nishioka was not ranked by MLB.com, Baseball America, or Perfect Game USA.
Nishioka hit .441 with 18 home runs and 8 stolen bases across 39 games in his senior season. He has experience playing both middle infield positions as well as center field. A native of Honolulu, Nishioka profiles as speedy utility player.
Nishioka figures to be a cheap senior sign, unsurprising as the Red Sox round out a top 10 that includes fifth-round selection Alex Scherff, a top right-handed prep pitcher in the draft class who will require an over-slot deal.
