MLB Draft Day 3 Red Sox recap: Rounds 11-40

On day three of the draft, the Red Sox looked to fill in some of the depth in the lower minors while looking for talents who might have breakout potential. Chandler Shepherd and Jalen Beeks, both taken in 2014, are recent examples of day-three talent knocking on the door of the major leagues. 

The team signed only 12 of its 30 day-three picks last season, a big step down from the 20 signed in 2015 and 18 in 2016. It is likely that this year's class will see a number closer to the latter ones. 

Here is a pick-by-pick look at each of Wednesday's selections for the Red Sox:

11th Round: Andre Colon, SS, Washburn Bilingual School, Puerto Rico

Colon is a 6-foot-1 middle infielder whose best asset is his speed, having run a 6.70 60. His defensive footwork is advanced and he displays an aggressive approach at the plate. He has a commitment to Jefferson College.  

12th Round: Beau Hanna, C, Winder-Barrow (Ga.) HS

Already a well-built 6-foot-1, 220 pounds with a plus bat, Hanna caught in high school but is expected to move off the position at the next level to first base or a corner outfield spot. Hanna is rated the 415th prospect in the draft by Perfect Game, and he has a commitment to Kennesaw St.

13th Round: Garrett Benge, 3B, Oklahoma State

Benge was previously drafted in the 22nd round of the 2015 draft by Cleveland following a monster .539/.636/1.017 line at Cowley JC. He instead transferred to OSU, where he followed a solid sophomore campaign with a strong junior one, hitting .304/.437/.533 with 53 RBI in 57 games. He also impressed with a .321 batting average in the Cape Cod League last summer.

14th Round: Aaron Perry, RHP, Hurricane (W.V.) High School

Perry is a 5-foot-11 right-hander ranked 236th in the draft by Perfect Game and 438th by Baseball America. He has a fastball that touches 95 mph and a curve that has flashed plus. Perry suffered a stress fracture in his elbow in the spring and likely projects as a reliever due to his smaller size. He is committed to the University of Kentucky.

15th Round: Marcus Ragan, CF, East Mississippi CC

It was a strong 2017 campaign for Ragan, who hit .395/.446/.661 and stole 25 bases in 28 attempts. He has a letter of intent to transfer to Arkansas-Little Rock if he does not sign professionally. 

16th Round: Kutter Crawford, RHP, Florida Gulf Coast

Crawford would have a long way to go to be the top FGCU alum in the Red Sox organization - ace Chris Sale went 13th overall to the White Sox seven years ago after a stellar career with the Eagles. Crawford is the younger brother of former first-round pick Jonathon Crawford, currently in the Reds system. Crawford the younger had a strong 2017 season, going 7-1 with a 1.77 ERA and 99 strikeouts against 31 walks. 

17th Round: Frankie Rios, SS, University of Southern California

A redshirt junior, the 5-foot-10 Rios had a solid campaign as USC's cleanup hitter, posting a .354/.418/.451 line

18th Round: Dominic LoBrutto, LHP, Florida International

LoBrutto, a 6-foot-1 lefty, struggled in 2017 following a very strong sophomore season. He posted a 1.04 ERA in 2016, but that mark rose to 4.80 this year despite an improvement in his walk rate.

19th Round: Angel Gonzalez, CF, Colegio Hector Urdaneta, Puerto Rico

Another outfielder with above-average or better speed taken by the Red Sox this year, Gonzalez is raw and lanky at 6-foot-2, 170. He has a commitment to Alabama State. 

20th Round: David Durden, CF, Emanuel County (Ga.) Institute

Durden is a superior athlete who is committed to Mercer in the fall—as a wide receiver.

21st Round: Lukas Young, RHP, University of Mobile

Young, a 6-foot-2 righthander, was the ace of the Rams, who are a perennial contender in the NAIA. In 14 starts, Young had nine complete games, posted a 2.67 ERA and struck out 83 against just 18 walks.

22nd Round: Hunter Haworth, RHP, Cal State-Chico

Another tall righty from a small school, the 6-foot-4 Haworth had a 2.57 ERA for the Wildcats. His best start came on February 12, when he struck out 13 in six innings of one-hit baseball. 

23rd Round: Donny Diaz, RHP, San Jacinto College North

According to Perfect Game, Diaz was the top player the Red Sox nabbed on day three, as they ranked him 252nd. The closer at San Jacinto, Diaz has a fastball that clocks in the 92-95 mph range that he supplements with a curve and a slider. He used that arsenal to strike out an astounding 60 batters in 30 1/3 innings. Diaz may be a tough sign, as he has a commitment to transfer to the University of Texas next season, where similar success would substantially raise his draft profile.

24th Round: Charlie Madden, C, Mercer

Madden was drafted in the 25th round by the Chicago White Sox last year but returned for his senior campaign. While Madden's calling card is his defense, he also has some serious power, blasting 17 home runs this season.

25th Round: Kory Behenna, LHP, Wingate

Out of Wingate's bullpen, Behenna had a 3.92 ERA, striking out 31 and walking six. Behenna is listed at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds. 

26th Round: Trenton Denholm, RHP, Oak Ridge (Calif.) HS

An undersized righty with a strong three-pitch mix, Denholm was ranked 404th by Baseball America and 266th by Perfect Game. At 5-foot-11, 183 pounds, Denholm lacks the size the Red Sox tend to favor in pitchers, but he is highly athletic with a fastball that sits in the 87 to 91 mph range. He has a commitment to the University of California-Irvine.

27th Round: Xavier LeGrant, 2B, Spartanburg Methodist College

After an uneven freshman year at NC State, LeGrant transferred to Spartanburg Methodist for the 2017 campaign. The six-foot, 180-pound middle infielder has good speed and defensive footwork and quick hands that could portend an ability to hit for average. 

28th Round: Oraj Anu, OF, Home School, Orlando, Fla. 

One of the more interesting picks on day three, Anu was ranked 472nd by Baseball America and 461st by Perfect Game despite his family having gone back and forth between homes in the Bahamas and Florida. Anu stands 6-foot-3, 210 pounds with excellent natural strength and good bat speed from both sides of the plate. He is committed to Florida International.

29th Round: Tyler Dearden, OF, Rancocas Valley Regional HS (N.J.)

Baseball America ranked Dearden 449th and noted that his left-handed bat has "violent life." Dearden has a commitment to Penn State, and would be a draft-eligible sophomore in two years if he decides to break a few eggs in the Big 10 Conference.

30th Round: Andrew Carber, RHP, Chipola 

Carber was one of five Chipola players taken in this year's draft. Carber is a 6-foot-9 right-hander who redshirted a season at Clemson before moving on to the University of Hartford and ultimately playing this season at Chipola.

31st Round: Michael Osinski, 3B, Longwood

A shortstop in college, Osinski is projected as a third baseman in the pros because of his solid arm. Interestingly, he has a contract to play in the Cape Cod League this summer, indicating he may be inclined to return to Longwood for a senior campaign.

32nd Round: Taylor Ahearn, RHP, Cal State-San Marcos

The senior had over 30 innings more than anyone else on the Cougars staff, posting a 4.08 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 99 1/3 innings.

33rd Round: Tanner Raiburn, LHP, Grambling State

Standing a full foot shorter than Carber, the 5-foot-9 Raiburn earned second-team SWAC Tournament honors.

34th Round: Luis Torres, CF, Elvira M. Colon HS, Puerto Rico

Committed to Taft (Junior) College.

35th Round: Trey Ganns, 1B, Northern Kentucky

Ganns was a two-way player, starting 14 games on the mound as a junior for NKU. However, at the plate, Ganns excelled to the tune of a .348/.449/.633 line with 57 RBI in 58 games. 

36th Round: Rio Gomez, LHP, Arizona

Gomez is a 6-foot, 180-pound draft eligible sophomore who had a very strong freshman campaign but struggled with his control at times in 2017. He is the son of ESPN reporter Pedro Gomez.

37th Round: Carson Teel, LHP, Oklahoma St.

Another draft-eligible sophomore, Teel appeared in 28 games for the Cowboys, starting three. The skinny, six-foot tall lefty struck out 77 in 60 2/3 innings.

38th Round: Jose Garcia, C, Doral Academy (Fla.)

Like 28th-round pick Anu, Garcia has a commitment to Florida International. 

39th Round: Ridge Chapman, RHP, Spartanburg Methodist College

Chapman joined 27th-rounder LeGrant on a Spartanburg squad that finished 36-20 in 2017. Chapman posted strikeout numbers that would make his namesake in the Bronx proud, punching out 94 in 63 1/3. 

40th Round: Cody Masters, CF, Coppell (Texas) HS

A 6-foot-2 switch-hitter, Masters has a commitment to Texas Tech.
