Cup of Coffee: Shawaryn, Beeks, Boyd all shine on mound

5/31 Cup of Coffee: Mike Shawaryn racked up the strikeouts again for the Drive, but a disastrous seventh inning put a dent in what had been an excellent night for the righty. Tyler Hill accomplished an impressive feat over the Drive's doubleheader. Steve Selsky came up with the eventual game-winning hit for Pawtucket. Jalen Beeks (pictured) took a no-decision for Portland, but posted a superb start.

A three-run sixth put Pawtucket over the top on Tuesday, with Steve Selsky coming up with the go-ahead single. Playing at first base, Selsky went 2 for 4 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Rusney Castillo went 1 for 4 with a double, a run scored and a stolen base. Marcus Walden earned the win, giving up just one run on four hits in five innings of work. He struck out three and walked none.

Mike Olt came up with the clutch two-run home run in the 11th inning to propel the Sea Dogs to the extra-inning win. Rafael Devers was held to a single in a 1-for-5 performance. Jalen Beeks hurled seven solid innings, giving up just two runs. He scattered seven singles in his outing, striking out seven and walking just one. Josh Smith pitched three clutch innings of one-hit relief, keeping the game knotted at 2-2. Luis Ysla picked up his first save of the year.

Another fantastic outing from Mike Shawaryn was for naught on Tuesday as the Drive blew a 7-0 lead in the final inning, falling in extras in game one of the doubleheader. Shawaryn was lights out through six innings, giving up just three hits and two walks while striking out nine. The seventh-inning disaster began when Shawaryn started off the inning allowing a double, a hit batter, a single and a walk. Pat Goetze and Algenis Martinez could not stop the bleeding, as the Braves stormed all the way back to win in extras. Tyler Hill went 3 for 3 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and two RBI. Isaias Lucena added a bases-clearing double in a 2-for-5 afternoon.

Greenville was able to put the first game's tough loss behind them in the nightcap, thanks, in large part, to a solid outing from Logan Boyd. The 23-year-old lefty pitched five shutout innings, giving up just a pair of hits and three walks. He struck out six and picked up his seventh win of the year. Lorenzo Cedrola went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Hill reached base three more times, making it eight consecutive plate appearances on Tuesday that he got on.

Player of the Night: Tuesday's honors would likely have gone to Shawaryn if not for the unfortunate ending, so Jalen Beeks gets the nod. The start was a nice bounce back for the 2014 12th-round draft pick after lasting just three innings his last time out. He threw 106 pitches, the most in one outing for him this season. Beeks has an excellent 2.13 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 42 1/3 innings of work.
